You can't end SARS without further corrupting the Police as they will all be reabsorbed into the Police. You can't sack them all either otherwise you will create a new army of armed robbers. You can only repurpose them to a different function (eg redeploy them all as protection officers to the rich which should keep their greed in check since their rich patrons will be dashing them something regularly) or you try to manage them better while keeping SARS as is with severe disciplinary/sackings for their commanders if they cannot bring their boys under control.

Yes I think it both movements share similarities. But i don't think it's the right thing to do per say, these law enforcement agencies are there to protect the masses. They are there to catch the bad guys because the fact is that there are and always will be criminals.

Obviously, the solution to the problem has become worse than the problem but i don't think we should eradicate the agency, I think it should be reformed; better training of officers, better discipline within the agency from the officers, better transparency from the agency, better public relations of the agency.
These are basic reform steps that can be taken to enhance the functions and product of the agency not shutting it down.

Indeed I agree. It's almost impractical to dissolve such a massive unit instantly. It will only create further problems.

It is wishful thinking that the government will End a tactical unit like that. What is needed is a holistic approach to end this menace once and for all.

What I feel should be done ASAP

1. The IGP should be sacked immediately. An Inspector General of Police that will give order and Officer under him will flout those orders has no business being an IGP.

2. The National Assembly should as a matter of urgency amend the Police Act to enable the President to appoint someone external away from the Force to head the PoliceNg. All the IGP that we have had and will have will keep having this same issue as long as they are drawn from this rotten system. If the Police Act is amended, maybe the President can appoint someone from the a Military, Airforce or Navy to clean up the PoliceNg.

3. SARS, FSARs and all tactical unit should leave patrol to RRS and should only be deployed during emergencies which must be approved by their commandant or the CoP in the state. They should also stop receiving complaint directly.

Also send them for more training and orientation. The bulk of these units are poorly trained.

4. Fund the police properly. These police are underfunded, go to their police barrack and see the kind shambles they call barrack. An underfunded police is a recipe for disaster.

5. If possibly, stop patrol teams from carrying guns and if they must carry guns they must account for every single bullet.

There must also be strict consequence for any Police Officer or unit found extorting, harassing or brutalizing innocent citizens. These police officers have this aura that they will get away with their crimes which embolden them. This must stop.

6. Read the riot act to the CoP and all tactical units in all states. Let them know they will be held responsible for any case of brutality, extortion or harassment that happened under them. Let the CoP also read this riot act of the DPOs under them. Until each unit command head is held responsible for the actions of officer under them, they will keep encouraging these junior officers indirectly.

7. Let’s start the discussion/process of State/Community Policing.

I have not been in Nigeria for a while but my recollection is this

We have
1. Police that wear black on black and are not good for anything beyond husband and wife fight. They are so useless that they cannot controldog and goats, Area thugs regularly beat police up. these are the police you will call that robbers are in your house and they will tell you to bring car to drive them. They are only good when collecting N20 from motorists

We have
2. Soldiers whose training are for real war. They no dey hear word and are very brutal. They are not fit for society except full blown war and jungle

Then we had
3 Mobile Police, they are like an hybrid of the 2. They are not as weak as normal police and not as fierce as soldiers. These were deployed to help in riots, communal clashes and later to keep law and order in the city because Police were totally inadequate.
We started having Operation Sweep, Rapid Response Squad and SARS which are feared by most and most people initially gave them credit for reducing crime. But as we know things get corrupted, these people became laws onto themselves and go overboard many times. You wont deny that even at this time, criminals cyber criminals, armed robbers still fear SARS more than anyone else

The question now is if we abolish SARS

1. what happens to the good work these SARS do? who will do it?

2. What happens to people you have trained to use guns and now without a means of livelihood. These will be the new vicious armed robbers

I think these pressure will make them know people are watching them closely and any misdeed will be treated as a criminal offence. any extra judicial killing will be treated and tried as a murder case

There is a lot wrong with law enforcement in many places, The field officers are not the most educated and are just a shade better than criminals themselves. Unless you pay more I doubt you will get better than those

I support the fundamental equality of all people irrespective of sex, gender and sexual orientation. I support a woman's reproductive rights and right of choice but I do not support late trimester abortion. I do believe in climate change but i am by means in support of curtailing economic advantages for this. I staunchly believe in a secular society not a theocratic society. The church must be fully separated from the state. Very few people will support shutting down the police, I don't think I've ever said that.
These are my ideologies for purpose of clarity.

Nigeria is fairly weaponized so sending police patrol teams out with no guns is tantamount to human sacrifice.

Due process and accountability when it comes to issuing guns and ammunition (which you also suggested) will be a better move.

I think we should start considering the decentralization of Police. Let people from each state/community police themselves.

We shouldn't abolish the SARS unit of the Police as advocated by some rather we should train and set clear guidelines on how they should be operating, any one of them found violating the codes of conduct should be meant to face the law. Those calling for outright ban are doing so in error because their preferred solution to the problem will only exacerbate the problem of criminality and insecurity the more.
