[quote author=wip2 post=94012229]Research on Rapid-point-of-Use Sensor

My lab is currently building fantastic and commercial viable sensor technologies using molecularly imprinted technologies. The sensor are able to detect multiple heavy metals in various sources, food pathogens and their toxins and cancer biomarkers.

Here are our recent work.

Collaboration with African-based Researcher:

To assist and train interested researchers in Africa, I am wiling to collaborate with few persons interested to carry out research in the following fields:
1. Electrochemical SENSORS
2. Wastewater treatment technology via photocatalysis

The aim is to train the researchers on how to carry out research, write reputable papers and publish in reputable journals so that person can create another chain reactions.

Progress will be disseminated timely

I will put up some characteristics and profile I am interested to work with.

My dear Prof.
At the mention of sensors, the child in me kicks for joy.
I once discussed this with supervisor at Unilag (masters in microbiology), but the prospect is dim.
Pls, if there is a way I could come in as an assistant (just to assist in laboratory), it will go a long way in helping me.

I intend considering this area for my research next year.

If u think it's necessary, I can network the HOD's of microbiology at
University of Lagos and
University of Jos
to join your team.

Please, I really need this.

Warm Regards.

Good day,

Yes yes, any interested person can take Ph.D. with me. If you read some of these posts you can see my research areas. I am also willing to collaborate with Supervisors and Researchers based in Africa or anywhere for knowledge exchange or co-supervising provided the supervisors are not lazy or unserious.

May I know your research interests and background?

Actually am working on our research page to give more details on what we do; personally, I will love someone looking at research-lab-to-market idea.

Good to know and thanks.
Research interests ; biotechnology (environmental, industrial), with major emphasis on biosensors.

Background
Bsc microbiology (Unijos)
Gained little knowledge on some molecular techniques at NVRI (National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Plateau State).
Msc Microbiology (ongoing) (Unilag)
Here I started nurturing the interest for biotechnology.

But I must say that I lack a adequate exposure to most practical techniques, thus seeking for opportunities to equip my self.

I don't mind if there is any short (few months) internship one could consider to brush up.

Regards Prof.

Biotech field is great and will be nice for Africa as few start-ups in this region.

Currently, biosensor is a great research field and with your background it can fit well. Just will need some electrochemistry exeperience to move up.

Biosensors have applications in the following fields which are often designated into clinicals and non-clinicals:

----Agriculture
---Health and Pharms
---Environmental
---Food industries
---Military

So you need to select which field of interest you wish to work on. If you are located in Nigeria; any of the first 4 listed above will suit you. Then as a researcher you have do background check which is major issues there. I understand that there are Malaria in Nigeria which is common? How much do they test for malaria at Hospital? Can you design faster and cheaper sensor to detect malaria without the need for highly professional person? I understand that many food industries are coming up in Nigeria, can you design fast and cheaper sensors for food poisons or mycotoxins? Do you want to work with the military or Drug-enforcement agency to develop rapid sensing of illicit drugs?

Most biosensors we have developed in my lab cost 1-3 dollars and results is ready in less than 1 min. Particular we developed sensor for detection of aflatoxin B1 in a small company trying to sell dried package fruits. Since they are buying in large quantities, it cost them 2$ per one non-reusable sensor. Which is like 75% cheaper than the common alternatives.

To set up a micro-lab for biosensor, the main machine needed is the reader which is electrochemical stations, few common lab apparatus. It cost me 2000 euro to setup a mini lab for that; most of our projects are targeted in all the listed fields and we have done 5 commercials so far in that field.

So think if which you want to do? I believe some of Nigerian universities should have the electrochemical station.

Thank you for your time Prof.
But you got me thinking. I like the food industry or Agriculture.
I would welcome any window of gaining requisite experience.
Electrochemical station in Nigerian Universities; could just be all theories.
Can the electrochemical aspect be done over there at minimal cost?
Still consuming you memo above.
Thanks for making out time.

Application fees into top universities around the world are too expensive for most students, especially those from developing countries. After spending money on standardised tests, paying another fee simply for your application to be considered can be quite annoying.
In this video, I share how I have evaded application fees by looking for creative ways of getting waivers. These tricks might just work for you too!

We have the electrochemical station in my lab, to be good, one may need to have access to the device, how to use it, interpret the results and many other things.

If you want to get attached to a university in Nigeria and your supervisor there approves you to work on this, we can make video training on the research and you can see when we are ready. But it will make a lot of sense if you are developing the biosensor yourself and testing it in your local environment. For example; if you design a sensor for the detection of illicit drugs, and want to promote its robustness to law enforcement company/agency, you need the portable handheld device with you to demonstrate it.......without that you can do anything. If you will work on sensors for detection of pesticides in agricultural fields, you need the device on the field. Its tiny and can fit into your phone.

First spend time come up with the specific ones that interest you, then you will do comprehensive literature review and from there one can know more what you need to enhance and then the main research can be fabricated.

@ the bolded, I have decided to talk to my departmental Postgraduate coordinator to see how you can made my co-supervisor (if it will be convenient for you).

I want the sensor developed locally within Lagos, if possible within the University of Lagos.
I was making preparations to reach out to Professor Emmanuel Iwoha of the University of Western Cape South Africa (he owns a sensor lab over there) for a short stay in his laboratory ( am willing to pay for all my expenses).
Fortunately for me, I came across here and I never let you go.

The food industry is my target.
How can one subscribe to some of these recommended journals (Springer et al)

One is less busy due to ASUU strike.

My target is to equip myself so I can be competent enough to carry out this research (including interpretation).
I intend publishing some of my work in the mentioned journals.

My dear mentor, all I can say is God bless richly as you guide me to take this quantum leap.

If you have the oppurtunity to go to this lab, I strongly believe it worth it. The mentioned professor is doing great job and I understand most African have easy pass to south African labs for research stay with less visa hurdles. Also, having direct practical in the lab will be far better than virtual.

As an individual, it will be expensive for you to subscribe to all Springer, Taylor and Elsevier journals. All universities in Nigeria (I don't know for sure), I belive have subscriptions to these journals. For our end, all universities have subscriptions to all the major journals and when you are using the university internet network you can access all the subscribed journals directly. Also, we have remote access, like I spend time abroad and I can still access my university network configured to on my machines. So ask your university for a remote access VPN configuration.

Recently Published from our Lab: Application of UV-activated photocatalyst to treat pharmaceutical wastewaters

Summary: For decades, antibiotics have been used both in human and animal medicine to prevent and treat bacterial infections and have saved millions of lives from multiple infectious disease. Since most of these antibiotics are recalcitrant, they have been detected in vegetables, drinking water, groundwater and various aqueous environment which is dangerous as they often results in Super robot bacteria strains that shows antimicrobial resistance.

Approach: we developed biochar from palm seeds and blend it with calcined layered double oxides to produce photocatalyst that can be effectively activated under sunlight and UV light sources. The developed material was able to remove 98% of antibiotics within 240 min of simulated pharmaceutical wastewater and 360 min for actual real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Researcher: A Female PhD candidate from Libya that focused on designing effective methods of treating antibiotics and emerging pollutants wastewater; her Ph.D. is funded partly by Libyan government, partly and salary by pharmacy faculty of our university. Supervised by Wip7. The Ph.D. candidate have developed 8 various photocatalysts for treatment of 15 various pharmaceuticals in different water sources. 5 research results have recently been published while others under review.

Publication: This result is published in Q2 Journal with impact factor of 3.3, Citescore of 5.2 and indexed in all well known databases. This is a free journal. Our University research unit and goverment research unit will reward us with a total of 1700$ for publishing this work as incentive.

Good day scholars...I recieved review report from a paper I submitted to Taylor and Francis and the editor prompted me to submit the graphs in editable format whereas the graphs were created in MATLAB and exported as a jpeg figure. My question is; how can I make the graphs editable? How can I export the graphs directly from matlab to excel...

Generally, figures should be supplied in one of the preferred file formats: EPS, PS, JPEG, TIFF which is usual for major journals.

However, If you export your images as GIFs, PNG, or JPEG files; the layout of some journals will not fit well and your images will look distorted or grainy after they enlarge them. Because JPEG, GIF, and PNG formats are all bitmaps, or raster images, which rely on mosaic-like pixel counts instead of the paths and mathematical calculations of vectors.

What is the solution?

The solution is to export your graph in an editable or vector format. Generally, printers or illustrators will prefer vector graphics because they consist of coordinates with lines/curves between them, the size of representation does not depend on the dimensions of the object. For example, one can print a vector logo or image on a small sheet of copy paper, and then enlarge the same vector logo to billboard size and keep the same crisp quality.

My question is; how can I make the graphs editable?

The common vector export formats are:

AI: This one is an adobe illustrator format which contains all the information from your image, allowing you to edit and re-edit your document over and over without data loss.

SVG: This is called scalable vector graphics which is very popular for web design, due to their high quality, excellent scalability, and low file size.

EPS: This one is referred to as encapsulated postscript and it contains vector information and thumbnail images for quick viewing.

Now all these vector formats can be edited from adobe illustrator, photoshop, Powerpoint, etc. For instance, if you send me a vector image, I can open it either via PowerPoint to edit it or via adobe illustrator.

Another way is to plot your data in excel and then just copy it directly into Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX) files which are acceptable for figures. Don't save as an image but just direct copy from excel, the Microsoft word has an embedded plug that allows image directly copied into it from excel to be edited as shown below.

How can I export the graphs directly from matlab to excel...

This is quite easy if you know how to use Matlab. You can use the "MLGetFigure" function to import the current MATLAB figure into the Microsoft Excel worksheet or you can use VBA macro (that's visual basic) and for this, you have to use the excel developer mode.

Visit this link for this: https://www.mathworks.com/help/exlink/mlgetfigure.html

I hope this helps.

Best wishes

General Manuscript Structure and Content Guidelines: A brief note

In general, to submit a manuscript, an author may request to have the following handy on sperate pages:

---Cover letter
---Highlights
---Author Credit statement
---Declaration of competing interest
---Manuscript with all details

Cover Page/Letter: Please review the guidelines for authors of your selected journal before you start writing your cover letter, as not all journals need a cover letter. Research results that would interest their readers must be selected by editors. If it is not quite clear how your research paper could generate interest based on its title and content alone, your cover letter is the only chance you will get to persuade the editors that your work is worth further reviewing. Sometimes, the cover letter is used by many editors to elucidate whether authors can obey simple instructions. Therefore, your chance to illustrate the relevance of your research to journal editors is a valuable introductory cover letter.

Key points to include in a cover letter:

--------Editor’s name if you have it or just simply write Dear Editor
--------Mention the name of the journal you are submitting to
--------A brief statement that your paper is not being considered by other journal or has not been previously published by another journal
--------Brief description of the research, why it is important, and why you think the readers of the journal would be interested in it
--------Contact information for you

Avoid the following:

----Avoid the use of jargons or too many acronyms
----Avoid using humor or familiarity tones or language like you are toasting the editor
---Try to limit the use of words such as “novel,” “first-ever,” first in the century”. Most times these types of words show bias and will make the editor question your ability to assess your work’s merits objectively.

Below is a simple guide:

Dear Prof.Wip or Dear Editor,

I wish to submit an original research article entitled “END SARS and REFORM POLICE” for consideration by the International Journal of Police.

Please explain in your own words the novelty and importance of the studies, mention the significant problem that you addressed in your research, and state, why the manuscript fit to be published in this journal and why you think the readership of the journal would be interested in it.

You may also compare your research with previously published like: “This manuscript expands on the prior research conducted and published by WIP7 in the Journal of SARS”

If you have previously part of your research elsewhere and the current work expanded on it: You can say: “I have presented a part of my findings in JP Journal. And I have acquired additional data to develop a new understanding of .....

like: I believe that this manuscript is appropriate for publication by IJP because it… (give specific reference to the journal’s Aims and Scope that your work fits).

Close it with:

I confirm that this work is original and has not been published elsewhere, nor is it currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

We have no conflicts of interest to disclose. Please address all correspondence concerning this manuscript to me at (give your official email address not Facebook page ooo).

Thank you for your consideration of this manuscript.

Sincerely,
Dr. SARS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Main Manuscript Should contain

Title Page

Include the title, all authors’ names and affiliations, and full contact information for the corresponding author.

Abstract

Usually, limit this to 150-170 words and avoid references or too many abbreviations (if you must use then pre-define it), and five to six relevant keywords (avoid repeating the words in the title) should be listed directly under the abstract on the same page.

Introduction

The introduction should explain the rationale behind the study, highlight the gap in knowledge being filled by the present research, cite previous research relevant to the current study, and clearly describe the significant contribution to existing studies. Ensure the introduction is balanced in terms of content.

Methodology

This section should contain a clear and concise description, justification of the conditions and procedures of the study, as well as the analytical tools or methodology used.

Results and Discussion

This section should present the collected data and analysis. Results for all measures should be reported in a concise, straightforward manner, using tables or figures when appropriate. Duplication of information that is presented in tables or figures should be minimal in the text, and all results should be reported in the text, rather than figure captions. The discussion should also explore the broader implications and significance of the findings, explain the trend in the result, and link it to possible reasons supported with references.

Conclusion

This should not repeat the abstract but should provide a summary of significant results and trends observed. Avoid references here and limit to 300 words.

References

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, we shall talk about verb tense in scientific/academic manuscripts

Choosing the correct verb tense for each section of a scientific manuscript can be challenging, but it is worth the effort.

Next time.

Next, we shall talk about verb tense in scientific/academic manuscripts

Choosing the correct verb tense for each section of a scientific manuscript can be challenging, but it is worth the effort.

Next time.

Thank you very much, Prof.

Great profile...welcome aboard!

AI is a broad field that can be connected to almost all fields of research for product design or development. Since you have a background in Computing then this should not be an issue for you. You only need to think of what area of research interests you. There is various hot topics/research in AI while some only need data some may involve lab/technical work to inculcate the trained AI model into physical devices.

So you have to decide if you want to research AI-enabled devices (fabricating the devices and integrate trained AI) or AI-enabled services (get data, train data, and deploy them as apps)..........This will then inform if you will need to go to the lab or just make use of existing/fresh data. Think of your current environment, think of what problem/challenges and then see how you can solve it then start to think of what you will need to solve these problems.

Considering your background you may go for AI-powered electronics (this will entail device fabrication or using already fabricated devices and see how you can modify it to dance to your tunes). There are many opportunities in real estate, agriculture, and medical fields that will be needing AI-powered devices.

Best wishes
Attached here are some areas which are majorly AI-enabled services.

Good morning prof.

In respect to your reply.

I built a desktop application for hotel reservation using native application. How do I channel this to writing a paper for publishing?

Also, I intend to build face recognition/identification for an hotel as well. How do I channel it suit the line of PhD.

Note. I have been developing applications, now I intend to channel it to academics. Your reply will kick me starting.

NOTE: From what I read online, PhD is all about solving problems, hence this question.

Thanks.
