Well the only advice I have is what the OP has said "Your body and mind are capable of doing extraordinary things". If you can keep on imagining it you will be able to do it. It something that has happened to me three times. First was bicycle kick. I was always imagining it till one day in training I tried it. It wasn't perfect but others on the field were astonished then I knew with practice it will be perfect. Second time it was this simple one on one dribble. But since you are a defender look for skills that is peculiar to the positio. And practice with both your body and mind. Mind make it easier for body to learn it.
