A simple explanation of these engines : V6, flat 6, inline 6, V8, V10, V12, VR6, W16

In almost every car , there's a good chance you'll find one of these engines names, but what does it mean?

Well the letters , V and W usually represent the shape of the engine, while the numbers 4, 6, 8 ,10 , 12 represent the number of piston found in the engine . The rather complicated one is the VR6 , 6 still means the number of piston , but there's no VR shape. For more understanding , let's get to it one by one.



V6


A V6 engine has a V shape engine and 6 pistons which goes to 6 cylinders


Flat 6


The engine is flat , but instead of cylinders facing upward , they face to the side . It also has 6 pistons

Inline 6


This is the traditional on , it's a straight engine with 6 pistons

VR6


This one is a little complicated. VR6 engines are V6 piston engines with a narrow angle between the cylinder banks and a single cylinder head covering both banks of cylinders.

V8


It's a V shaped engine with 8 pistons , mostly found in muscle cars.

V10


Just like the V8 , it is a V shape , but with 10 pistons

V12


It's like a combination of two inline 6s , it also has a V shape with 12 pistons.

W16


This is the Most complicated one , it has 16 pistons with a W shape. If you look at it closely , it's Patten is like a VR 6.
