Once you visit Yankari, you won't feel like visiting any other national park to see these majestic wild animals. They are in their natural habitat and are not afraid to come close to the vehicles. You can see them hunting, playing, eating, sleeping, mating and fighting. And needless to say, this is a paradise for photographers in general and wild life photographers in particular. It provides a safe harbour for the wild life and has a balanced ecosystem for all kinds of predators, prays and birds to flourish.

The anticipation grows, as you keep wondering what would be the first animal you’re going to see. Would it be lionesses’ harem targeting a buffalo bull or an elegantly poised giraffe which stood graciously browsing at the leaves of yellow bark acacia tree.

One of the highlights of Yankari Games Reserves is the opportunity to feel the sparking natural warmness of Wikki Spring water. I don’t know if I have any mystical reason why I prefer it to a swimming pool, I think it comes down to the fact that I don’t get to swim in open water very often. I simply like the challenge of open water and that it is outdoors. There is a certain freedom and naturalness to it. Wikki Spring water is relatively calm; you don’t get much in the way of environmental adversity such as waves and currents. So, it tend to have the calmness and simplicity of pools.

Wikki spring sprouts out beautiful spa-bath-worthy warm water that has a temperature of 31.1 degrees celsius all year round and amazingly it pushes out 21,000,000 litres of clear spring water out in the Gaji River. Located about 42 kilometres from the main entrance of the park, you can stay in one of the many furnished chalets at the “Wikki Camp” which is the tourist centre of the Park and you can make use of this graceful and elegant natural phenomenon!

These baboon dubbed “Yankari Area Boys” can open unlocked doors and jumped through windows to search for food.

Influx of visitors has fed the primates' taste for human foods.

Six Elephants Fitted with GPS/Satellite Collars in August/September to Further Reinforce Ongoing Protection Efforts in Yankari Game Reserve

GPS/Satellite collars provide real-time tracking of elephant herds
Yankari Game Reserve contains Nigeria’s largest elephant population, currently estimated at around 100
Since 2014 Yankari has been co-managed through a partnership agreement between WCS and Bauchi State Government, with funding support from Bauchi State, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Elephant Crisis Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society
Thanks to focused law enforcement efforts and community engagement programs, no elephants have been documented killed in Yankari since 2015
The elephant collaring exercise in August/September was funded by the Elephant Crisis Fund, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Wildlife Conservation Society

This is an interesting piece. I was once there too. My question is: 'how come we cannot manage our own affairs wholly, without seeking help' ?

Simply lack of local experts in such area. How many Nigerians go to school to study anything related to wildlife conservation. That is why we still remain redundant as a nation because our culture and mentality is too conservative and safe. Thank God for digital era that is upon us we are slowing evolving into the right part

We have lots of experts in all this field. I know because I am a graduate of Zoology. I can't really fathom what the problem is.
Just think about how they manage our zoos and museums of natural history in house, before we move to natural parks. We are better than this
