Visa Denied 20th October 2020

VO: good morning
Me: good morning sir
VO: Where are you going?
Me: I am going to CMU to pursue a master degree in IS with concentration in SAP and Cybersecurity.
VO: why this school?
Me: cmu IS degree program is ranked as one of the top SAP graduate program in the nation. It is the leader in North America SAP certification. Cuts in
VO: V.O:- Tell me things I can not find on the school website. You are telling me things you crammed from the school website
Me:-( Looking at him without saying anything because I was so confused) I continue talking and said cmu is a research school and most of my course work will be more of research bla bla bla
VO: who is sponsoring you?
Me: my brother. He’s an independent petroleum marketer. He’s into sales and supplies of petroleum products.
VO: Are you married?
Me: yes I am with a son
VO: I am sorry you not qualified for a visa please try again.

Note: Gurus in the house, please actually went wrong Immediately I came out I rescheduled for another appointment but this time I choose Abuja and I saw December 14th as earliest date. I quickly picked the date with my previous application reference number. I will have to pay for another application fee before my interview date. Do I need to make any changes or adjustment on my DS 160 Please I need advise on things to do so I can be successful on the next date I picked.

You started losing your opportunity to win over the VO and prove you're a credible student when you used the bold sentence above. This is what happened when you don't prepare for the interview.
We have said it time and again, prepare for the interview. Nobody chose a school merely because of ranking. In fact, ranking doesn't matter, but that's what you emphasized on, and the VO knows that Central Michigan University is not really high-ranking university.
You're expected to pick a school because of what the school has to offer you. Course structure, opportunity for fund, faculty member, research interest that aligns with your career goals, and program outcome as outline on the program department webpage; what the course will do for you if you study it at this particular school. If you look at what's mentioned in the bold line , you'd see it is not possible to answer the question, why this school, without sounding credible to the VO.

Additionally, he gave you another chance by asking you to tell him something unique to you about the school, but you were looking at him confused. I would have also refused you if I were the VO. Sorry, but getting the F1 visa is not just about getting admission, paying sevis fee and filling forms. You gotta be ready to defend the home work you have done during the interview.
Go back to your drawing board an make amends and refire. All the best!

@ fairheart thank you so much for the response. I am very grateful. Please can I answer the question why this school with the below reason:

I applied to 4 universities and I put into consideration some certain factors before picking one. Factors like the Setting of the school, school fees and better relationship with my lecturers. I love rural lifestyle.CMU is situated in rural area. fewer distractions:no excuse for not getting my course work done, very quiet environment, better professional opportunity,Reduced cost of living, easy and cheap to move around. I will be able to know my lecturers properly since it’s a small school with small class size. This will enable me really improve on my studies most especially on my research interest. My lecturers will be more likely to give extra help.

The better professional opportunity part though. Gives the impression you're thinking of immigrating. My opinion though, I haven't gone for my interview.

Electronic I-20 is acceptable at the embassy for your interview.
You would have to pay for your visa before you can book an appointment. It does not come with the payment, you schedule the appointment separately on their site.
The SEVIS fee is $350 and the rate depends on who is paying it for you.

Hello friends,

I did my interview earlier this week but didn't pay reciprocity fee because I was told to come back as they were having network issues at the consulate. I have not been able to return because of the unrest in Lagos and the consulate has since been closed. I am due to return to school in December.

If you were me, will you go ahead to pay for plane ticket(s), knowing that we are not certain of how the events in Lagos and Nigeria at large would unfold.

I know my question is subjective, but I could use one or two different perspectives.

I saw in on the page that Purpose of travel is to begin or resume a valid program of study in the United States within 60 days when no regular Visa appointment are available. I’m currently doing my masters online but the start date for Spring is Jan 10. Can I go ahead to Request for Emergency Appointment or wait till 60days to resumption?

So have you made the request for emergency appointment? Any response yet?
What consular location did you apply to?

Please Help.

Hi guys. Please I need some help answering questions on my DS 160 form.

Here are my questions:

For intended date of arrival, do I pick any date within my earliest date of arrival and my program start date? And is it a must that I book my flight to that day eventually?

‘Have you made specific travel plans’. What do they mean? I’m thinking ‘no’ because I haven’t planned for flights or anything.

‘Address where I’ll be staying’ - can I just write my school’s address?

Those who have filled the form, did you actually fill out all your social media usernames in the part where they asked for social media presence?

Also, if I choose ‘not employed’ in the form, will that be a problem during the interview and will I have explanations to do?

Lastly, please am I supposed to ask my school to send the original copy of my GA offer letter or a colored printout will do?

I know the questions are many but I’ll appreciate answers to anyone of them. Thank you.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by Aderin0la: 3:21pm On Oct 23, 2020
1. Intended date of arrival- yes, you should pick any date within the earliest date of arrival stated on your I-20, and your program start date. And no, you mustn’t book your flight on that exact day. But you can’t arrive in the US earlier than 30 days to your program start date.

2. If you haven’t made specific travel plans (e.g gotten your flight ticket, booked an hotel, etc), simply answer No.

3. Address where you’ll be staying - unless you’ll be staying with a relative or you already have an apartment waiting for you, please enter your school address.

4. For social media usernames, you can just fill in 1 or 2. I’ll advice LinkedIn and Instagram/Facebook.

5. If you’re currently not employed, you do not need to lie. State it that you’re unemployed. In the field for previous work experience, even if you’ve never been employed, you can enter your Nysc work experience or some volunteer work you did. When the VO asks what you’ve been doing since graduation, you’ll simply tell him/her what you’ve spent your time on.

6. No. The colored printout/copy of that document would suffice.

All of these do not show that you have any connection with the school. From all your factors, I'd advice you stick to relationship with your professors.

Go on the research area webpage of your chosen program. Search and pick a research title that you feel you'll be comfortable talking about (Since you've chosen the school at this point, you just gotta pick one even if you fancies none), read the overview for better understanding and reach out to the lead researcher/professor.

Please do some research on the topic before reaching out though. If you are lucky, the prof will reply you with some of the milestones already achieved and a snippet into what they are doing next (you're already having conversation with your prof and you also have key info for your next interview). However, in the case that you didn't receive a response, you just have to hold-on to the information you dug up from your research (the overview, your findings and how you think you can improve the research team) for your next interview.

For your next interview:
* The Research title (Do not pick USArmy or NSA funded research. E get why)
* Know the Professor name
* You have been invited to join the research team
* Summary of
The Research overview
Your findings and how you intend to improve the team when you join them.

I assumed your focus is Cybersecurity. Reason for the italicized in the first bullet.

Be concise and confident during the interview.

P.S. You won't look confident speaking about fabricated info. So please do some research.
