Mata started on the right wing, there's nothing he offered there VDB wouldn't offer at a more agile rate. the reason Mata wasn't totally destroyed by Chilwell was Chelsea being even more flat going forward.
James played for his pace to pin back the Chelsea James, the same reason Greenwood came on to keep back Chilwell. the Chelsea James was just about the best player on the pitch in the first half so nothing worked from those two positions tactically.
VDB would have offered much more than both in those positions, it's a given.
