Sorry, i just saw this.

The reason is this. You should be looking at total returns to your money.

Most stocks that have December as their financial end of year, their share price rises to the highest value in January, after January it starts dropping.

So using Zenith as an example, the share price is probably going to peak in January, after that it will loose close to 10% of the January high.

In other words, if you bought it in November for N19 and it is selling at N25 in January, by the time you wait to qualify for dividend, it would have lost 10%. Though it is not bad to wait for dividend but your returns will be lower even with dividend.

You can sell in January and come back in May or June because the price will still come down to N19.
You can not time the market

I agree with you 100%.

But what i have written is based on historical trends.

Let us just watch in the coming days what will happen.

One of the reasons i shared what i shared was because during the January Bull many people start buying, but that is when they should be leaving the market.

The best time to buy is in the coming weeks, not in January

Nice perspective and thanks for that but looking at the obtainable interest rate across all fixed assets being ridiculously low, dont you think that circle will be broken? In the past people switched between tbills and stocks, where they invested the proceeds from stocks into Tbills while waiting for prices to deep. Then again, I feel there is going to be re-pricing of most fundamentally strong stocks because of the devaluation.

I do not think the cycle will be broken, because after the financial year end, results will have to come out and people will take positions to profit.

For example there is a high probability that Zenith will pay a dividend of not less than N2, if you buy tomorrow, you are already sitting on 10% if it is only dividend you are interested in.

So what happens is once it is confirmed that the dividend will be N2 (by insiders, the only way you will know is when the bull starts) there will be a rush to buy the shares to make 10%. By N25 the return is no longer 10% hence appetite will wane and you see drop in price. All this happens in January.

For example does it make sense to buy Zenith at N27 while expecting a dividend of N2, while there are people sitting on 25% already?

As per repricing due to devaluation, the repricing occurred in March when most stocks lost almost 80% of their value.

But from the their 2nd and 3rd quarter results it was obvious that the devaluation and Covid did not have much impact on their business.

Please note: I am not an expert but this is my strategy.

Look Well Before You Leap

At this uncertain time let’s beware of schemes that may want to take advantage of the low rate regime of Tbills to swindle us of our hard-earned money.
One major consideration in choosing any investment window at this time should be SAFETY of your capital/fund not the RATE.
It’s usually at a time like this when rates are low in the regular investment windows you begin to see some folks coming with unusual and juicy rates. Beware!

Here are some tips/questions to ask:

Is the investment firm regulated in anyway? ie regulated by SEC or CBN or any government constituted authority even if they are you can take your due diligence further to know preferably from SEC if they are aware of the said product.

What are the underlying assets?

How long has the firm be in business, what are their background and affiliates. It will not be a bad idea to know about their management and board members. A board member of questionable character or integrity may be a wrong signal no matter what they claim.

Is the rate being offer agreeing with economic realities

Is the rate per annum or otherwise? N.B: In all cases regulated rates are per annum even when having shorter tenors anything otherwise request explanation.

The list is not exhaustive you can go further as much as it will help you make informed investment decision and take calculated risk.

Currently at Investment One there are products you can try out apart from VGIF
1. High yield Investment note
2. Medium term investment note
3. Real estate backed note

In each of the products the minimum initial capital is 10m except the medium-term investment note which is 5m.
As usual call/chat me for details 08181057319 you can also PM or give me your email and details will be sent to you.

@emmasoft what do you have to say about investment one's VDF? I have VGIF but would like to add some dollar investment.

Suggestions are welcome from anyone who has a dollar investment portfolio with any of the investment firms. Thanks.

VANTAGE DOLLAR FUND:

The fund is an Open-ended Fixed Income Dollar Fund and will invest in Nigerian Originated Dollar Denominated assets (Sovereign and Corporates). The fund seeks to provide investors with a bias for dollar-denominated securities access to such securities, which ordinarily would be inaccessible to them by virtue of the minimum amount typically required to make such investments.

Key Features

Open-ended unit trust scheme which is duly authorized registered in Nigeria
The minimum investment amount is US$500.00 with additional investments in multiples of US$1.00. The Fund Manager however reserves the right to review these amounts as the need arises.
Redemption will be paid within 5 Business Days after the relevant documents have been submitted to the Fund Manager.
Every unit holder shall be entitled to receive from the Fund Manager an Electronic Certificate for the number of units purchased by such unitholder. The Electronic Certificate shall be conclusive evidence of the number of units held.
The minimum holding period in the fund shall be 180 days. However, the Fund Manager is aware that investors might have a need for their monies within the minimum holding period and as such would allow redemption during the minimum holding period subject to a 15% charge on the positive total return on the units being redeemed on the day of redemption.

Good fundamental and dividend paying stocks is also not a bad idea at this period of low rate regime. Some stocks can give dividend yield of up to 14% apart from possible price appreciation.

You should also share the risk factors pages to show investors how easily the fund can lose everything in the underlying high yield investments.

In the current low interest environment that we are seeing globally, NOBODY (and I repeat NOBODY) can guarantee investors anything near 9% per annum on any investment, talk less of high yield and real estate notes. People should know that High Yield products have a very high probability of default.

Market your products but also inform would be investors of the risks involved.

Exactly, with the likes of V-Bank offering customers 14 percent return on investment, still sounds too good to be true, unfortunately when they start defaulting we don't get to hear about them anymore.

First thing first - invest in yourself by reading on how investment in stocks works. You can read stuffs here, https://www.nairaland.com/1131485/nigerian-stock-exchange-market-pick/5523 and other pages on stock thread, read materials from sites like nairametrics.com, ask questions, even listening to economic news can add to your knowledge.

N.B: If your risk tolerance is low I will advice you start with low risk investment options like mutual funds particularly VGIF from there you can begin to build your confidence.

While doing the reading and equipping yourself, you need to open a stockbroking account and have a cscs account. You can do that by clicking the link on my signature to have a stock account or any form of investment account with Investment One.
