first.i think you haven't really discovered yourself to know what really works for you.what is your mode of study?.do you read to understand or just read to pass.you need to build a system that you fit in perfectly. 1 Like |

Issiijay: Well, I attend Federal University Oye Ekiti. I'm in my 2nd year studying industrial chemistry.
Ever since secondary School, I've wanted to study civil engineering. Chose UI twice but I wasn't picked. Not until I chose Fuoye, this time I had to go for a course in science. I got confused, I don't know which to do. My best or favorite subject then in Secondary School was mathematics, I know it to the core. But I thought of not studying it cos I don't want to go deep into maths, I want something different.
Choosing a course to do became difficult cos I was being careful as not to choose what I'd regret later cos I feel doing a certain course in school isn't about choosing any course.
I also didn't want to go deep into Physics, despite the fact that I know Physics well just after maths, then I went for industrial Chemistry. My Dad was worried too, he felt probably I should go for something related to engineering. I felt chemistry would do
Resuming, most of my course mates would say they're studying industrial chemistry cos Chemistry was their best subject and they had interest in it. I felt disturbed cos studying it for me is of a different reason.
Coming to exams and grades, which is the main part. There's something bout me, I hate qualifying myself. I prefer wen people do so themselves. With my grades n intelligence, they say I was the 3rd best graduating student in my secondary School. But for me,I'm really really average.
Everyone dislikes reading school notes I guess, most read to pass not to understand. In University, you must learn to read well and assimilate well. When I go for lectures, read my notes after, at the next day I'd forget all I've read.
This stuff has been happening since secondary School I guess but it became worse in University. My Dad is so brilliant, he's always wanting the best from us as the children especially I as the first born. I've prayed several times, fasted, even met with a lecturer n a counselor on what to do.
This discouraged me that I don't really have to read after lectures, instead I read when it's 4 to 3 days to exams so as to remember some, making it be like I'm reading to pass. Cos if I read them long ago, I'd have forgotten. The problem is that the notes tends to be now plenty to assimilate n understand.
I'm always depressed about this, and I'm tired,I don't know what else to do. The main problem is remembering most I've read. Some times I'd want to read my notes, I'd be like if I read, I'll still forget once it's tomorrow ♂️. I don't know what's wrong with my retentive memory.
If I can read n remember most things I read I'll be having good grades. Infact I'm so so ashamed to write out my CGPA. even if my parents or friends in school sees it, they'd be so disappointed cos if the fact they know how intelligent I am.
For my 100level,it's just 3.00.. it's so so so so lowwwww. My dad could cry if he sees it. He wants me to graduate with a first class also I too. We haven't done first semester exams yet in this 200level,I need to do well at least have more than 4.00. I cry when I imagine how can this be possible. I've bought lots of photocopied past questions of each courses. Just as how I've gotten handouts. I look at how plenty those notes are and past questions are and be like how will I read , assimilate and remember all.
I'm so bemused right now cos school's resuming soon. And we might be rushed to so exams. I don't want to fail. I even picked my notes recently at home and after reading the first page of the handouts,I saw how much lessons the notes still hold and how much I'll read,I stopped feeling discouraged and just now as am typing,I can't seem to remember all I read in that first page. It's annoying and painful.
Is there something I can drink or take or do I have to keep reading and reading and never stop till it's stuck in my head. Maybe a topic from each courses per day, I don't know. I'm not lazy to read the notes. I'm only feeling discouraged of my ability not to remember wen I read.
And something,I am not a night reader like most do. I don't read at night. I've never done it. That's wen I get to sleep. My lecturer says if it's like that prolly I should be reading at the noon time or when am free during the day, making use of all opportunities during the day.
I go to classes by 7,come BK by 5 during Mon n Tuesday, 7 to 3 on Wednesday n Thursday n on Friday it's 10 to 12,by 5 to 6,I go for church choir rehearsal. Saturdays, a lecturer could get us to come for some classes,by 4 to 6, I'd still go for Choi rehearsals cos am an esco
PLEASE I NEED EVERYONE'S HELP
have a comprehensive note book to put down important points and revise it during ur exam period, and when you are through with the exams don't throw these books away, keep it and each time u are faced with a difficult question,u go back to the note and not the textbook,it will definitely help you. 1 Like |

@Issiijay
Most student did pass through that phase. Try to read actively and not passively. To read actively, buy an exercise book and try as much as you can to write down possible question that you feel may be asked in your exam. After reading the topic, revisit the questions and answer them. If you forget some, open your textbook or note to check the answers and move on to the next topic.
Lastly pray to God before and after reading for retentive memory. 2 Likes |

@paul 100..thanks alot for this wonderful write up of yours.you indeed are a scholar for adopting these study method but i would like to ask a question regarding your write up on the spaced repetition point you made.
How can i apply the spaced repetition method when taking multiple subjects/courses? as you know in most of our universities in Nigeria we do like 8 to 9 courses even more per semester and each courses contains different topics eg Financial Accounting may contain 6 topics, Economics may contain 7 topics etc. I hope you get my point.
How then can one plan effectively to repeat these topics in each courses more than twice or three times using spaced repetition on each different courses.
Also as regard reviewing those topics again, are we to go over and answer the questions we set on the topic previously or we are to re read the topic again. Cause i was told re reading is ineffective for retention. |

Cause i was told re reading is ineffective for retention. You have to plan yourself though I must say it is a little bit hard but you can do it.If you have 7 different courses.Let say you read Course 1 on day 1,the next day before you read course 2,you can quickly go through all the questions you have set for course 1 then you can start reading your course 2,if you have a good retirement memory, you will notice that on day 3,even without going through course 1,you will be able to remember atleast 87% if not even 99%.Just try your best to make sure that what even you read in day 1,you go through it the next day(day2),then you can leave day3 and go through again day 4 and by this time,I will not forget it easily. You can read other courses and go through it again after 3-4days.If you do this, you will notice that even if you do not open for 1week,you will remember everything.Though i am an engineering student and we dont really read a lot of stuffs,it is mostly calculations.we learn so many formulas and methods on how to solve different problems. You are not rereading. When going through those questions you have formed from your book.Try not to open your troops. If let say out of 100%,you were able to remember 70%,then you can open to see the ones you could not easily remember. If on the long run,you notice that there are some particular questions you are always finding hard to remember, you can put a sign on it(like an asterisk, circle with red pen etc)so that towards your test or exams you will be able to go through them very very well.I learn some of these tips from YouTube. 2 Likes |

paul100: Get a notebook and set questions for yourself with the mindset of "this kind of question can be asked by the lecturer".For example, you are reading organic chemistry and chapter 1 is ALCOHOL. This is it what you will do.When you read Alcohol, remember they will be many subheadings in this topic. You can set questions for them like this, let say 1)what is the general formula of alcohol? 2)What is the functional group of alcohol? 3)What are the types of alcohol and explanation them? 4)How is alcohol prepared? 5)what are the physical and chemical properties of Alcohol? If you check any organic chemistry textbook, you will surely see the answers to this question. As i say buy a notebook and write this question. Also look in between lines of every paragraph. For example, primary alcohol have one carbon atom,so you can set question like a)primary alcohol have how many carbon atom? Now if you can get all this questions,it means you are ready for your exams. Now this is where there is little problem. You said you don't like reading in the night but you can try and sacrifice time before you sleep,to go through this question again. Now,if you can remember everything or atleast 65% the night before you sleep, you are doing well. That remaining35%,you did not remember, try to do through your note again. Now,you will do what is called reading spaced repetition.Let say the next morning you can still remember 100% after going through them. You start the process of spaced repetition, don't read it day 2,go through it again the third day,if you get everything. You go through your note and the question you set again day 6 and you will see small small even if you did not open that note and questions you set for 1whole week, you will remember everything. I am also a student in 200level,I wish I did this in year 1,I could have been on 4.5 and above but don't worry we will get through. Also pray and avoid pornography because if you are an addict of porn, you will not be able to concentrate. You are reading something and instead of concentrating fully. You are seeing flashing images of girls with big ass and boobs.Pornography affects the brain. Wooow scholar spotted I would like to know you more sir |

Take time to understand a material when reading, and when reading if after 5 or 10 or 20 minutes etc you can't concentrate or understand what you're reading anymore then stop I repeat take a break. And go back to reading after your short break. Try this and thank me whenever, it worked for me. 1 Like |

Thank you very much paul100 and most especially thank you for your response. Actually i heard about this method on YouTube most notably from a Cambridge medical student whose name goes by Ali Abdal and also, Cal newport talked about this method on his book(straight A students secret). this method has been proven to be the most used by top students all over institutions across the world. I am an Accounting student myself and accounting courses include the combination of theory and calculations. But i can remember i used these two method (Active recall and spaced repetition) during my ND days(national diploma fro. Kaduna polytechnic) to squash big time making other students feel as if they are not serious. I graduated the second over all best with the second highestCGPA in my set and even my friend that graduated with the overall best result in our set uses this same method. The only problem i had in school was that me and him always drag for the best result each semester because we both know that we make use of same method for studying. But i must say this method is not easy as it requires hardwork and disciple but the good thing is it works so well
P. S i am now in the university same with my friend who i said graduated as the overall best during our set and it would suprise you that he is currently on first class CGPA 4.66 in the university using these same methods he even made a 4.77 GPA last semester that's to show u how good this methods work, but as for me i got admitted in the same university as his this year whe he got admitted last year so that makes him a year above me so i am yet to have a GPA due to this covid 19 outburst. I will follow your advice, too many subject makes the whole thing kind of hard to plan but your idea has made it easier for me thanks........ |

First thing first, understand yourself! How you read is very important but what you do while reading is even more important. Let me use myself as an example, I can read in the noisiest and distracting place ever and still assimilate well, but the moment I put something in my mouth, forget it! My brain is now processing the food. Whatever I read during that period is lost like I never see the write up before, I have to go back and look for where I mentally stopped. Likewise there are some things that might be distracting you, it might be noise, it might even be the worry and pressure you give yourself. Make sure you clear your mind and understand yourself. Secondly do you love what you are studying? If no, then I guess that's where most of your problem comes from. I won't preach to you to develop love for your course cos I've heard similar sermons and they are so annoying. I had wrong subject combo in JAMB so didn't get the course of my choice, I then began to make plans to cross. Gbam! Thats when the problem started, my GPA made a free fall from 4.95 to 4.53. Why? While brain was trying to solve Spearman's Ranked Correlation in Economics, my mind was busy concocting different sort of codes. I wasn't mentally detached from the course I wanted to study, And the prospect of crossing raised my hopes so high that I wasn't paying attention to my immediate studies but began to see myself studying the course I wanted. Thirdly your brain is assimilating, believe me it is!! Have you failed a course before? Then it might be your brain playing tricks on you that no matter how you read this course e no go enter. I once read a course back to back only to get one yeye score in the test.. One would think I would buckle up for the exam but nooo!!!, I told myself, "if I read, its still one yeye score I'll get, so whats the use". The thing is our mindset is a very powerful thing it can either make or mar us, so use it positively, see yourself acing your courses it will give you enthusiasm to read more.. It works!! Don't wait till exam is near before you read that's your biggest mistake, the thing is that as you read after every class your brain is subconsciously assimilating it but you don't know. Read over and over as much as you can! Finally make use of reading aids, like YouTube, you could read aloud and record your voice on your phone with a background beat or instrumental. Then listen to this anytime you don't feel like reading.... Set question for yourself using recorded audio like "Allotrope of carbon are how many in number?" then pause like five seconds and say the answer into what you are recording. The purpose of that pause is for you to answer the question, before you actually hear the answer when next you are listening to the audio. (This is the best reading method I'm know) Lastly write write write!!!! Buying handouts and past questions will do you little good if they don't pass through your own handwriting. Nothing stops me from writing out a PDF or slide of over 200pages ( except I'm not interested in the course) I'm not insinuating you do this but don't just underline handouts and think you've killed it. Take notes, write down something. Every time you read write!!! And don't forget above all pray! Last last success is ours.. 2 Likes 1 Share |
