Everything about this country is worrisome and tiresome. Education that should be given first priority above other sectors is being relegated and dragged in the mud. At 60 years since independent we are still talking about strike! When a toddler crawls for 60 years, when will he walk? I just can't imagine that in this 21st century. We really have a thousand miles to cover as a country. |

somehow:If not because of the strikes, the university system would have turned to that of primary schools now. The little monies released were done due to the strikes. Of course this is the only way for now, as long as people like you refuse to back ASUU and stop government irresponsibility. Go and look at governments sponsorship of education in the countries will like to use and spite Nigeria, it is tremendous. Even countries in Africa as the Prof mentioned are far ahead of us in public education management. Education is quite expensive and cannot be funded the way we are doing. 1 Like |

zikter: This is a pure lie Has the primary schools turn to rubbish now even though they don't even generate funds like the universities do? ASUU fights for their pockets alone and this is glaring. Why has Unilorin not turned to a primary school ever since they opted out of ASUU? Answer this first. 1 Like |

somehow:please leave that one. he wants to force a mischievous narrative that ASUU is always right and fighting for the common man. what are the little stuff they've done with the billions GEJ gave them? him no go fit answer dey talk say na small compared to the agreement. ehnnn even that small what have dey done? nothing! I wish FG can make a law such that any strike by ASUU or any academic union that extends beyond 3 months should be punished by forfeiture of subsequent payments of salaries after three months. you can't keep wasting students time at home for almost a year now claiming you're fighting for them. how do you intend to make up for the their time wasted at home ? |

ASUU and FG will just be turning our heads up on down. ASUU talked about funding varsities, hostels and no lab equipment and my question is what happens to all the: acceptance fee, hostel fees, faculty fees, departmental fees and even tho I've never been to lab as am not a science student I can comfortably say that these student pay a lil fee. where does all this cash run to? Are heads in charge of all these not members of ASUU?? No wonder I see why 20 persons will always contest for VC position and in some cases some varsities starts trying to impeach the VC they've got. ASUU shouldn't just be sounding as if they really care for the students welfare!! |

jasonnn9:What is going on is a shame. Lots of Nigerian students now go abroad to study. The truth: the educational system needs reforms in terms of policies & curricula & funding. The refusal of ASUU to be enrolled on IPPIS platform is due to selfish reasons to cover up fraud & multiple employment of officers in several institutions. This is the price we pay for poor governance & leadership. |

somehow:which government university is not with ASUU, as far as I know it was only uni ilorin and they are back with ASUU. Even at that, they were not and are currently not the best federal university in Nigeria. So, i don't understand your point. Look, simply give me a proof that our universities are adequately funded compared to even contemporary countries in Africa. Regardless of whether ASUU is fighting for improved welfare they are right. Their salaries are very poor by the way. Poor facilities etc are all as a result of government neglect. So what exactly are you people defending government for? I don't get it 2 Likes |

somehow:May you are the one lieing. You don't even know how deplorable the public primary schools are. Who send their kids to them in this age apart from the poorest in the society. The average well to do parents sent their kids to private nursery and primary schools. The same Uni Ilorin is on strike for issues bordering on poor funding. ASUU members welfare is part of the poor funding issues. How much does a professor take home after more than 30 years in service? Is it up to a million? So even if they fight for their welfare, it is no crime. As you like comparing Nigeria with SA, Ghana, Egypt, Tunisia, etc compare the salaries of their lecturers, education funding before you come back. By the way, uni ilorin is not the best in Nigeria compared to other federal universities, and the fact that it is not a primary school does not mean it is competing favourably with the best universities even in Africa. 1 Like |
But what other measures? Our government doesn't understand anything apart from the strike. If not for the strikes, the little respect for the public universities would have totally gone. Even the corruption in all facets of Nigeria is driven by government. So the government is still the genesis of everything. Worse still, if the money needed to find our education system was made available and embezzled, one would know where to vent ones anger, but the money is not even there. Go and look at education budget and compare with the nations will like making reference to[/] with all the phD holders, MSc, BSc and professors it's only torturing students to get what is needed they can think of? |

That is their work, to tutor and lecture students. What else do you want them to do? If a lecturer owns as much as a retail store, he is castigated again for neglecting his poorly paid job. If you assume all of them with PhD, msc etc should leave their jobs for something else, who will them teach if everyone attains knowledge and leaves? Of course the best option is to make the system workable, convenient for both students and teachers. The key to this is in government's hand. |
