I think anyone earning 200k monthly in Nigeria is not doing bad.

Wait until you get to a Saner Climes and start making ×4 of that monthly comfortably excluding great Incentives without fear of being sack and all the brouhaha over here. You will realized you've been wasting your youthful years away because of peanuts......

Hmmmm Question of the Ages, I seems not to understand these Nigerian people......

I am convinced he isn't thinking Nigeria will change for the better, he is only pained he doesn't have the capacity to emigrate. He is an hypocrite like Desmond Elliot who wrote IELTS in 2018 in an attempt to relocate at least his family to Canada and is bashing his fellow celebrities today for supporting end sars.

You don't mean it? shocked But I thought Desmond relocated his family to the US specifically Maryland before venturing into politics?

Indians head billion dollar companies, not that they built them.
Anybody can be appointed CEO by a board irrespective of whatever.
All this your poverty numbers is senseless.
There are still things these poor people buy,not so?

Why don't you sell them those things?
Would you take a 2020 S class you want to sell to your rich uncle or to that your barrow pushing brother in Enugu who the whole family had to contribute money to marry him wife 2 years ago?
Answer this first before you quote me again, thanks.

There are actually Indians who founded companies which generate millions and billions in dollars. Compared to Nigerians and even other black immigrants, they (including the Chinese) are more enterprising.

Regarding the poverty stat, it's a reality not conjecture. When a populace is notoriously poor and continues to be at the bottom of the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, there's a limit to what they buy. It's why out of 400 companies that are worth a billion dollars plus, very few are Nigerian while most are South African.

In business, numbers do not lie. Nigerians are very poor people.

Did I say Nigeria wasn't poor?
How do some of you even reason?
There is a limit to what they can buy, yes.
Does that mean purchasing power is absent? No.
So what are these poor people buying?
Rice,toothpaste,milk,medicine,petrol,etc...not diamonds and luxury.
How do I make money from their poverty?
Simply by selling to them what they can buy.
It's that simple and it's common sense,really.
If every business went by those numbers that whining bitch of a guy put up there without looking at their kind of product and concern,I'm sure the likes of telcos, retail chains,industry,etc..won't have been present in Nigeria today.
After all an average Nigerian don't make up to a dollar a day so how can he buy anything at all? undecided

Also, can you name some of those billion dollar companies built by India immigrants in America?

Well, even the likes of Nestle, Unilever and many businesses are groaning admist low purchasing power. Like Tensazangetsu20 said, it makes sense to start a business in a place where purchasing power exists compared to a place where it doesn't. Just because Nigeria has a population of 200M doesn't mean our purchasing power equals Brazil who has similar population stats. Our people are too poor which is why major brands aren't operating here unlike say India or Brazil or even Vietnam.

Those are Indian billionaires who started their businesses in the US. Again, Tensazangetsu20 is right and even more so when one considers that India has more homegrown dollar billionaires than Nigeria which doesn't even has an abroad-grown billionaire.

This thread prompted me to do research about life for immigrants in Canada.

The Canadian dream we have been sold is just good PR by their government,in addition to some sweets thrown in (Free health care, free education, child support). All this is indirectly paid for by way of taxes. The unemployment rate is high, high cost of living and rent.

Now,on the relaxed immigration policies to Canada. The Canadian government isn't doing anyone a favour.Rather they are luring you in to build their workforce, increase their population and also generate a lot of revenue off the visa fees immigrants pay.
The fact is this, the more persons that immigrate there, the more tax revenue the govt makes!

So many Nigerians don't do any research before moving there, they just want to escape from Nigeria.I will attach screenshots of persons living in canada as found on quora so everyone can know what to expect before moving there.

If you want to get a true picture of what life can be in canada,go on quora. Many are not saying the truth here on nairaland. It's not so rosy.

Imagine a Nigerian who left here, was living in a one bedroom basement apartment with his wife and 3 kids. Both of them work but can't make enough to get a bigger apartment. So they basically live from hand to mouth!

My thoughts are this: Canada is for persons who don't really have much going on for them here or persons who have made so much money, that even if they aren't making enough money there, they have savings to live off on.

This is bad belle on many levels.

This is exactly what i was discussing with my husband. My point is that people should do proper research before jumping on a plane to Canada. It's not the paradise that it's painted to be.The average Nigerian gets carried away easily, only few of us actually think these decisions through and do thorough research before moving.

Quora is your "research" ?

And Indians are not humans,or they are not smart? What's your point? This attitude is why many keep shut and allow people to go there and see for themselves.

My husband is a sailor who travels round the world due to his job.He tells me about Nigerians he meets while on shore leave in different countries. Many are well educated but had to resort to working at coffee shops , cleaning, driving taxis etc. A lot of them regret moving abroad because all the money you make, you spend on rent, bills and tax, with little room to save. The sad thing is that so many are ashamed of coming back home.

Last year my husband had to give a guy he met in Portugal some money to buy himself food. They got talking and he told my husband that he is saving up money to go elsewhere and see if luck will smile on him.He had to cut down on food.Even when he is hungry,he endures it.

A lot of persons make it abroad, while some don't.What works for A may not work for B.
All i am saying,do proper research about where you are going to.Imagine the worst possible scenarios and prepare for it (especially financially).Plan well, have enough backup funds and be ready to rough it out being that it's a new Country you just moved to.

Canada is like every other country on earth. So many of you paint it to look like heaven, luring gullible people to risk it all and move there only to end up disappointed. This is my last post here, good luck to us all.May our hustles pay!

I agree. Because in naija every kobo you make you keep. You don't have to spend money on taxes, school fees, generator, fuel for generator, police bribe, transportation, phone credit, water, food, clothes, etc. Only in Canada does your money go to bills and daily expenses.

Register your business, get liability insurance (depending on your business), copy right/patten if you need one. Pretty simple and straightforward.

Why do Nigerians coming abroad expect everything to be easy. I can. But I don't do business. Whats wrong with building your credit history, then accumulating assets, to take a loan against that ? Must everything happen overnight? Better yet why haven't these young business minded men in Nigeria, gone and collected loans from a naija bank ? They must have created credit history by now lol. With mortgage, the bank don't give you money. They simply pay the property developer for you and collect their money from you in bits,so that if you default with periodic payments, they collect their house back and throw your ass in the streets.
Same for cars. You all don't own this things while the mortgage or note lasts, because a single default can have them repossessed.Just a paycheck away from being homeless kind of situation.
But for loan, the bank has to actually credit your account with funds they will have no control over with no collateral to hold on to for an immigrants case,so if you fail or chose to take their money, how do they recover it? undecided

Using cash for everything is a 3rd world mentality. Even billionaire take loans. Nothing is stopping an immigrant from opening a business. A bank has to assess your liability. This isn't your fathers bank. Prove your responsible and there's a realistic way you can pay the money back on time, why won't you get it ? Or you think you'll land today, then get a 1 million dollar loan tomorrow? So they do that for naija as well ?

People who live in the west are laughing at you. I let you go when you mocked the restaurant business, one of the most profitable industry in the west. But your ignorance is comical. The unsecured loan you're talking about is called a line of credit which most have. Its in your account. But if you want a business line of credit, even in the millions, you have to show your business plan to the bank. This is not the bank of jagga jagga, or first uncle bank. Prove you can pay them back with interest and the money is yours. Which bank doesn't assess their risks ?

As for real estate/home ownership in the west. When you get the mortgage and start paying it down, your house also appreciates. The bank will take what you owe on your mortgage, along with the new appreciated value, come up with a number, and allow you to take a loan for that against your property, the new appreciated value, based on your mortgage interest rate. Are you following? So I know someone who bought property in an expensive area in Toronto called lakeshore 10 years ago. With the appreciated value, and with him paying the mortgage down for 10 years (he has renters there) the bank said he could collect 900k dollars loan against his property. He's only 38 years old. Again what are you talking about?

Billionaires take loans, but not at the level of cars and houses wink
They take loans to do business and expand their empire.
Only poor people buy houses and cars on credit,so they can use their little change for something else.
It seems you are very dull, how does an immigrant prove to a bank that he is worthy of credit worth a million dollars, not mortgage, but outright cash credit?
You talk about business plan?who gives a shit about your business plan?the ban wants something it can hold unto should you default you dey talk business plan?
Ngwa go and collect the loan na,mugu cheesy
It is not a must that your house will appreciate in the west, that depends on an whole lot of factors you might be too daft to understand, this one weh to understand common credit dey hard you.
You give example of someone who has paid a mortgage for 10 years and owned the property and you describe it as easy access to credit?
Wouldn't the bank own his property should he default?how is this easy access to credit?
Where will a fresh migrant get the collateral to give in the first place?
Also for African restaurant business, its a limited market for Africans only.
What happens when this tiny market isn't buying as much for factors such a no time to cook, temperature, cost, competition, etc?
That a few people have made money from it don't make it a good business because its customer base is restricted to Africans only.
Whites,Latinos no get time to dey buy your garri na cheesy
And you don't need much money to start up an africa food trading business. So why bring that up? undecided
And also I don't know who you think you are talking to,you can't use a house that's still on mortgage as collateral to collect loan.
Also,if you default on your mortgage, the house gets repossessed and you get thrown out with no benefits, all the money you've paid will be considered rents,so that your friend story is cooked up bs cheesy
I'm sure you are on poor lunatic in canada, else I see no reason why you'd be spending productive time(by the hours) trying to prove what to me?

So why bring that up? undecided

You're getting emotional. Its a sign of defeat. Stop talking about things you know nothing about. I'm not reading all that. Still waiting for the criteria for a common man to get a bank loan in naija. I guess Mark Zuckerburg with his 30 year mortgage is broke ? lol. You don't know anything about business. Go and sit down.

TransAtlanticEx:
I will speak about myself only,I don't need a loan to buy a car in the first place and I drive pretty new cars.
Also, you were the one that said nothing is stopping any immigrant from opening a business abroad na lol. cheesy
Why you dey change mouth again.
You can take a loan of $1m?
Do you know what a loan is this woman?
You think its mortgage or car loan abi lol?
Let me tell you the difference since you don't seem to know.
But for loan, the bank has to actually credit your account with funds they will have no control over with no collateral to hold on to for an immigrants case,so if you fail or chose to take their money, how do they recover it? undecided
So my friend, nobody will give you $1m cheesy
You can tell that to these unexposed, desperate kids, not me.
wink
Logic over emotions please.

Am in finance, and you are killing it.
