Openbusiness:How do you differentiate a Hausa and a Fulani? |
Re: The 7 Most Populous Nigerian Tribes In The World by Openbusiness: 7:58am On Nov 01, 2020 |
Seerade029:They are different Tribes and different people. That they share some cultural and religous similarities doesn't mean they are the same people. Their Languages are different. Hausas own the Hausa Language. Fulbes (aka Fulanis) own the Fulfulde language (or Fula). Hausas are the BIGGEST tribe in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Fulanis are not. |

Seerade029:The Fulani's speak the hausa language than their own language Fulfude (i don't know if i got the spelling right) while the Hausas adopted and absorbed the Fulani culture . Most at times they're both called Hausa -Fulani |

Re: The 7 Most Populous Nigerian Tribes In The World by Openbusiness: 8:56am On Nov 01, 2020 |
Seerade029:You might need to do a personal research on that. It's not a BLACK and WHITE contrast. There are many grey areas. It's like White people, to them African Black people look alike and it's hard to differentiate. But for us African Blacks, we can differentiate ourselves easily. And to Black African people, Caucasian White people look the same to us, it's hard to differentiate. But for Caucasians, they can easily differentiate themselves, like Scottish, American, British, Irish, Scandinavian etc. Same thing applies to this Hausa / Fulani differentiation. Personally, in my opinion, as per physical characteristics, Hausas are generally Bulkier, generally more dark skinned and thick headed. But Fulanis are generally slimmer, more fair / brown skinned and slender headed etc. A Hausa man's face is usually kind of bold and expressive, but a Fulani man's facial appearance is usually kind of soft or tender some how. Hausa noses are typically regular, but Fulani typically is pointed as per African comparison. Also, tribal marks help to distinguish but that system is gradually fading from society totally. Anyways, that's just my own personal way of identifying them separately from afar. And you have to be aware that these physical characteristics OVERLAP between the 2 Tribes sometimes. But beyond this, the major difference is accent. Hausa accent is different from Fulani accent and if you have gotten familiar with hearing them speak, you should be able to tell them apart. And hope you know that there's a lot of intertribal marriages between these 2 Tribes in Northern Nigeria and you have many mixed children as a result bearing both resemblances. So there will always be a lot of grey areas. First 2 = Hausas Last 2 = Fuldes
