So, you have a girl that's growing up and want to do your best to keep her safe. You may be getting some things right, but you may be getting some things wrong as well.

I see many mothers go about keeping their daughters safe by being overprotective or hiding things from them - she's too young, they usually say.

Why Will Your Daughter Need Protection Anyway?!

Well, they are very vulnerable and are at heavy risks of being abused or taken advantage of.

I have seen young girls get raped, molested and even manipulated.

DISCLAIMER:

This will not answer every issue or concern you may have about your daughter. In fact, this is a friendly advice that comes from personal experience and understanding.

It will mainly focus on girls under 19.

That being said, let's get to it!

1. Teach Her Etiquette.

Yes! She needs to know how to conduct herself in society.

Things like dress code, polite communication if not well understood can get her in trouble - while growing up and even as an adult.

Don't brainwash her, just let her know the protocols of society and how she can use it to her advantage.

2. Establish A Friendly Curfew

I grew up learning from my mother that there are times for several levels of movement, I'm not even a girl and still carry this mindset as an adult.

You may want to teach your daughter safe times to move, and reasons why. If she understands not to stay too late out, you've done well!

Don't impose things. Not sending her on errands when it's very late can be a good start.

3. Let Them Know Some Things About Sex

Don't say she's too young. If she doesn't hear it from you, she may hear it from the wrong person.

This is very important if she's in her pubescent years. Let her know a little of this and that.

A teenage girl should know what consent is and what the age of consent is in Nigeria. Pregnancy should not be a foreign topic.

I say this because there are wolves in the form of men that prey on the ignorance of young girls.

4. Have More Relationship Talks

Do i need to explain this further?! A dying love with your husband should not prevent you from having these talks with her - i know what that feels like.

She needs to know when she can have certain relationships, how love and lust works etc.

What to expect and how to identify red flags. This will look irrelevant until she considers settling down, and is very clueless!

5. Teach Her To Be Vigilant

I'm sure you have been waiting to see this.

Does she know your phone number without you calling it out?! If the answer is NO, she will have no way of reaching you should something come up.

If you want your daughter to stay safe, try teaching her how to react in difficult times.

This applies to sons as well and fathers are not left out of the parenting process.

To be frank, you need to know so much if you want to keep your children safe in today's society.

Ignorance will keep them in a box and will only make them more vulnerable.

If you're a parent, i wish and hope for the very best - start opening up please

Please, don't send your daughters on errands very late in the night.

There are paedophiles and predators that station on the street, usually at that time.

If your daughter walks up to you to ask questions about sex, you would be making a mistake if you brush it off.

Try to give a clean and clear response. Don't over share if she didn't ask.

I have seen girls get molested for talking out of line.

I have also seen little girls get preyed on by grown men for sitting down carelessly. Whatever they do, it is very wrong and counts as abuse.

Still, try to teach these little things.

Teach them to blend with the crowd in an unfamiliar terrain so as not to be singled out for abuse.

no room for being too loud and no room for being overshy.

You're one of those people that read a few lines and comment immediately.

Check where i commented that it applies to the male child as well.

Might create another one more tailored for boys growing up though.

Many women shy away from that third point, example my Mom. She will just tell you many real life stories of girls who have gone 'astray'(like she calls them).

Most mothers are like that. The topic makes them uncomfortable, they feel the less you know, the better.
