I fall into the second category, and mostly vote on tax issues and decency of candidates rhetoric (I don't vote based on moral issues like abortion, religious views, gay rights etc, I only care about my safety as a black man). A white man in the same position could overlook Trumps racist invectives cos it doesn't affect him directly rather than vote for Sanders who he knows may hammer his taxes.

150 million people voted this election. How many are registered party members for Dems and GOP? Subtract that from 150m, that should tell you roughly the size of the undecided (uncommitted/Independent) pie. It's not a number to be sniffed at. It's political naivety to ignore what may appeal to that demographic. They are in that demographic because they don't have strong or extreme beliefs or don't care enough. That's what you need to win in an election.
