Why Was Obigbo/Oyigbo Taken Out Of Imo State And Carved Into Rivers State? by gidgiddy: 10:45am On Nov 09, 2020 |
I have been wondering about this boundary adjustment that was done in the 1970's that saw parts of Imo state such as Egbema, Etche and Obigbo carved into Rivers state. Today, Egbema people have half their community in Ohaji-Egbema LGA in Imo state, while the other half is in Egbema-Ndoni LGA in Rivers State. What was going here? Why was Obigbo taken out of Imo state, put in Rivers state, then renamed 'Oyigbo'? 10 Likes 3 Shares |

Without sounding immodest, this strategy will not help IPOB, neither will it help the aspirations of any igbo man in Nigeria 12 Likes 7 Shares |

gidgiddy: And so? Is this the current problem facing Imo state? How does this bring roads, infrastructure and every dividends of democracy to Imo? What is the current happiness index of the people.? What is all these Rubbish about Obigbo, otigbo, ovigbo, osigbo or whatever? Nnamdi kanu went there and created a mess of himself and trying to turn a community to a terrorist zone and you are here writing nonsense. Let them remain there. Good Governance remains the key 26 Likes 5 Shares |

IgbofromDelta: Most comments on nairaland are deliberately done negatively to incite people into crises. A lot of imposters claiming to be from southern Nigeria are enemies of the zone. It's a pity 7 Likes |

gidgiddy: But you can see the net effects today already and you are still asking why. Some igbos don't even know the predicament of these igbo communities carved out in this way. The military regimes did this. The federal government took time after the war to redesign an SE that can be easily managed. The main aim was to push igboland far away from the coast and make it a very unhospitable place deprived of any serious economic development. This was why they made sure that the abandoned property saga lingered on for a while to force igbos out of PH by creating issues between the igbos and the minorities there. Then the oil rich nature of some of the communities. Don't forget that before the creation of bayelsa , the ijaws dominated Rivers politics. Federal forces more or less wanted the oil fields in those boundary communities to be in the hands of the minority groups that fought with them during the war. That's why Egbema was devided into two. Infact, the igboid section of Rivers State produce most oil accredited to Rivers from the inland. These communities are victims of circumstances and when you hear less informed igbos telling you that igboland begins and ends with the SE, it simply speaks to their level of ignorance of latent issues in Nigeria's politics and never a statement of fact. 34 Likes 4 Shares |

vanunu:Folks should read up on the atrocious activities of the Justice Mamman Nasir boundary adjustment committee. Together with the likes of Obasanjo, these evil people simply sat down and used knives to carve out oil producing areas of these communities from the SE states. The evil perpetuated by the Nigerian state against the SE is mind boggling. 20 Likes 5 Shares |

"The war aim and (final) solution properly speaking of the entire problem, is to discriminate against the Igbos and in their own interest. Such discrimination would include above all the detachment of those oil-rich territories in the Eastern Region, inaddition, the Igbos' freedom of movement would be restricted, to prevent their renewed penetration into other parts, leaving any access to the sea to the Igbos, is quite out of the question, " (FederalNigerian Minister speaking to E. C. Schwarzenback, Swiss Review of Africa, February 1968). OP the above is the answer you are looking for. 16 Likes 1 Share |

Moferere: Kabba taken from Kwara is like Ezza taken from Enugu. They are still in same geopolitical zone which is NC and SE respectively. I can't speak about Ayere as I don't know much about it. But we have some Igbo speaking communities in Benue and Cross River too. But those are different issues. The carving out of Ndokis and ASA people in Obigbo from SE to Rivers state was done with malice and evil intent. Likewise the division of Egbema into two with the oil producing part put in Rivers and the "then" non oil producing part left in SE. 17 Likes 1 Share |

Igboid: Some part of Ekiti (SW) were carved to Kwara (NC) Some parts of Ondo were carved to Kogi (NC) Truth is, it is wrong to go to these states and fight. They have been delineated and recognised by the constitution and only a constitutional process can change that. So, going to oyigbo to fight, and rename it obigbo is wrong. Call a spade, a spade. 11 Likes 3 Shares |

The other day I was here on Nairaland I wanted to open a thread about something like this. I forgot. If Egbema is removed from Rivers and rejoined to Imo and Etche is readded to Imo also, what will be the remaining oil output of Rivers state? Someone more knowledgeable of the respective oil outputs of communities in Rivers can open a thread on it. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Moferere: The original name is Obiigbo. It was Rivers state that renamed it Oyiigbo. Don't get it twisted. And no one is going to those places to fight. The indigenes are Igbo and are naturally pulled towards any pan Igbo struggle. No one is calling Yorubas in Kwara and Kogi strangers , why is Rivers state government hell bent on changing the Igbo identity of Obiigbo indigenes? 20 Likes 3 Shares |

Christistruth00: Itsekiri don't speak Yoruba. Stop it already. Their language is Yoruboid but they have at no point in history identified as Yorubas, they have always been distinct. Stop being mischievous . There is no single colonial census in Nigeria where Itsekiri were counted as Yorubas. They have always been a distinct group. And for all its Worth, Itsekiri became a part of Midwest region by referendum. They voted alongside other minorities to leave Western region. They were not carved out of Western region by a military fiat. In fact certain parts of Delta state that were oil rich were ceded to Ondo state during these boundary adjustments . 17 Likes 2 Shares |

In the 1964 Midwest referendum Itsekiri voted to remain in the Western Region. Was it ever in Imo state? When Rivers was created there was nothing like Imo. Rivers was created out of the then eastern region with a clear cut boundary, but a time came ibo started claiming parts of Rivers then ruling had to come from the centre to settle the matter. Ibos have been wailing since 1967 Rivers was created and will continue to wail. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Igboid: States in Nigeria are units of Administration and not necessarily ethnic homelands whose boundaries may be difficult to establish. Geographical landmarks, certain Historical events and sometimes aspirations of the people were used to set boundaries between States. Examples of what you raised abound all over the country. Jebba is divided into two, one part in Kwara and the other part in Niger State. Owena is partly in Osun and partly in Ondo State. Akokoland is partly in Ondo & partly in Edo State KareKare peoples are partly in Bauchi & partly in Yobe State. Some Ekiti Towns are carved into Kwara State (They even have EKiti LGA, Kwara State) while the bulk of Ekiti form their own State in the S/West. 1 Like 1 Share |
