Nigeria has joined China & UAE as the only countries operating the WingLoong II Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle. The 2 x Nigerian Air Force WingLoong II, which can remain airborne for 31hrs in ISR mode & 26hrs in offensive role, will add significant value to COIN & anti-banditry Ops

Close to 200 Nigerian Air Force pilots, engrs & techs are undergoing training in 9 different countries as part of efforts to bridge decades of gaps in capability & capacity that have made Nigeria vulnerable to asymmetrical threats.

Well done Nigeria! I do wonder though, seeing as Iraq and Jordan got rid of theirs, was any thought given to the more capable CH-5?

Good news keeps coming. Already arrived Nigeria:

Departure of two OCEA ships for Nigeria

October 2020

After the delivery to the Nigerian Navy over 8 years of one OCEA FPB 98 MKI, eight OCEA FPB 72 MKII and two OCEA FPB 110 MKII, OCEA won three tenders for two additional OCEA FPB 110, one OCEA OSV 190 SC-WB and four OCEA C-FALCON Interceptors.

The Nigerian Navy will soon take delivery of two new ships designed and built by OCEA shipyard: the FPB110 - P193 - NNS SOKOTO and the C-Falcon 2 - P272. The two ships were loaded on cargo in La Rochelle on 26th October 2020 and will be delivered in Lagos in November.

Four additional vessels will also leave OCEA shipyard in early December for delivery to Nigeria. Thanks to the continuous Integrated Logistics Support that OCEA has put in place for the Nigerian Navy, the fleet of boats built by OCEA is and will remain in operation on a daily basis to the complete satisfaction of the customer.

I'm sure CASC was able to address a bulk of the issues from feedback received before international clients would opt to buy again, especially NAF. In any case NAF diversified it's purchase so I guess there's that.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition part of Dutch ammunition contract

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) is a part of a massive ammunition framework agreement between Rheinmetall and the Dutch armed forces, which could be worth up to €500 million.

Germany’s Rheinmetall in late September announced that it had renewed and expanded the longstanding framework agreement with the Dutch procurement agency Defence Materiel Organization (DMO) for the supply of various types of ammunition for a period of at least ten years.

The framework agreement envisages annual call-offs of around €50 million, meaning that total volume could come to €500 million. The customer is already preparing for the first call-offs, Rheinmetall said.

The framework agreement encompasses the supply of 35 mm medium-calibre ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles, 40 mm ROSY smoke/obscurant cartridges, and a family of state-of-the-art 155 mm artillery ammunition.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition has already assumed full responsibility for the complete 155 mm portfolio, which extends from the Assegai ammunition family to modular charges and fuses. Rheinmetall Denel Munition will supply M1711 and M1712 insensitive high explosive (IHE) 155 mm Assegai rounds as well as Illuminating and Infra-Red Illuminating projectiles, and M2000 Practice rounds.

The 155 mm M1711 is a base bleed variant of the M0121A2 Assegai round while the M1712 is the boat tail assembly version. Maximum range is between 24.7 and 40 km depending on barrel length and type of round.

The Assegai range comprises insensitive ammunition and conventional high explosive rounds as well as smoke/obscurant, illumination, infrared/illumination and other projectiles. In ballistic terms, all members of the Assegai family are identical. This assures that they are all able to attain their full range of around 40 km.

Standard Assegai rounds feature a conventional boat tail assembly. To boost their range, the customer can replace this assembly with a base bleed (BB) module, even under field conditions. With a barrel length of 39 calibres, an Assegai BB projectile attains a range of over 30 kilometres. Fired from a 52-calibre barrel, the range can exceed 40 kilometres. The Assegai ammunition family complies fully with the NATO Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMOU) and is qualified in accordance with STANAG norms.

RDM said its 155 mm range is fully NATO qualified for the 52 calibre Pzh2000 self-propelled howitzer.

This is fantastic news. We've built up a large fleet of patrol vessels and ships, after the delivery of the final OPV for the Nigerian navy, we should look towards acquiring proper fighting ships.

At minimum, 2 Corvettes and 1 Frigate.

Generally a good day for Nigerian defence watchers.

1. Troops of Operation FIRE BALL have continued their aggressive and responsive posture with the aim of routing out the remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic States West Africa Province criminals from all their identified enclaves in the North East.

2. Consequently, on 7 and 8 November 2020, the gallant troops of 27 Task Force Brigade located in Buni Gari of Gujba LGA of Yobe State dealt a decisive blow on some marauding Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province criminals in a failed attempt to infiltrate the peaceful town. The gallant troops of the Brigade who were ever on high alert fought relentlessly forcing the terrorists to withdraw in disarray due to the troops' superior firepower. Nevertheless, the unrelenting troops gave a hot pursuit and inflicted heavy casualties on the fleeing insurgents.

3. In the aftermath of the decisive encounter, 5 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists were neutralized while the following equipments were captured: One Fabricated (VBL) Armoured Personnel Carrier, One Boko Haram Gun Truck, One NSVT Anti Aircraft Gun, One QJC Anti Aircraft Gun, One Rocket Propelled Grenade Tube, One PKT Gun, One General Purpose Machine Gun, One QJC Extra Barrel, 6 AK 47 Rifles, 311 rounds of 7.62mm Ammunition NATO (links). Further exploitation is being carried out as the resilient troops continue to dominate the area with aggressive patrols.

4. Relatedly, on 8 November 2020, troops of 151 Task Force Battalion deployed at Special Response Area Miyanti in Bama LGA of Borno State while on fighting patrol made contact with a pocket of Boko Haram criminals. The gallant troops instinctively engaged the criminals with heavy volume of fire and consequently destroyed their hideout. The troops further rescued one woman and 3 children unharmed from the criminals. Accordingly, 2 bicycles and other items were recovered from the fleeing insurgents.

5. In the same vein, on 3 November 2020, troops of Army Super Camp 7 deployed in Bama, Borno State successfully thwarted a suicide attempt on their camp. The vigilant troops sighted and neutralized the lone female suicide bomber before she could detonate her vest.

6. In another development, troops of Army Super Camp 11 deployed at Gamboru on 3 November 2020 conducted a robust Clearance/Fighting Patrol to clear suspected Boko Haram Criminals hideouts at Bulama Lumbe and Ndufu Villages. The gallant troops came in contact with the criminals and engaged them with heavy volume of fire neutralizing 2 Boko Haram criminals and forcing others to flee with possible gunshot wounds. Resulting from the encounter, the troops captured one AK 47 Rifle and 2 Boko Haram terrorists flags.

7. The troops of Operation FIRE BALL are hereby commended for their resilience, doggednes and commitment exhibited during the above encounters. They are equally encouraged not to rest on the successes so far achieved but build on them.

8. The entire populace of the North East zone are hereby assured of the determination of the High Command of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to finally rout out the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists /ISWAP criminals from their enclaves.

The United States and Nigeria are convening a virtual meeting with members of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS on November 10 to affirm the Coalition’s commitment to countering the threat of ISIS and its branches worldwide, including in West Africa, and to supporting ongoing international efforts in the region.
This was made known via a statement by the Embassy of the United States of America.
The statement said the meeting will outline the ISIS threat in West Africa and focus on ways the Coalition can strengthen its collective approach in specific areas such as battlefield evidence and border security.
The statement added: “The United States, and the 82-member global Coalition it leads, remain fully committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS and its branches, which is critical to U.S. national security and that of our partners and allies.”

If we had made serious investment during Yar'adua, Jonathan era, we would have passed this stage by now.

Although we bought 5 UCAVs and 6 ships during Jonathan's era. 2 new and 4 second hand.
