Kogi State Bread Levy/Tax by KEVIND: 9:51pm On Nov 12, 2020
The Kogi state government has introduced a levy on every loaf of bread baked in the state.

The state ministry of commerce and industry said the levy is aimed at improving the internally generated revenue.

But the state chapter of the Association of Master bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) told TheCable on Thursday that the bakers are against the levy.

An executive member of the association simply identified as Godfirst said the association has begun moves to meet with the consultant the state charged with collecting the fee.

Godfirst said they received a memo from the ministry imposing a levy to be paid “on each loaf of bread” produced.

“The letter was sent to us that a consultant has been given the job to generate fund from bakery to state government; to generate revenue to (for the) state government,” he said.

“We are trying to meet with the consultant but we have not been able to meet with him. We want to meet with him to give us more explanation.”

He said bakers in the state are experiencing hardship occasioned by the pandemic and will not be able to meet the new demand.

“We are not happy about it, presently there is no market. We are facing different types of challenges, and if they are now asking us to pay another tax, we don’t know how we can cope,” he said.

Kingsley Fanwo, the state commissioner for information, was not available for comments when TheCable called his phone number.

The state ministry of commerce and industry said the levy is aimed at improving the internally generated revenue.
They are always thinking of improving IGR. They do not care about the effect on the companies and the people.
This is the reason many companies are closing down.

If you check most of these states, their state owned companies are no longer functioning, due to mismanagement.

The people are on their own, trying to make a living and also create jobs that they fail to create, in an atmosphere that is not even conducive, yet, they want to choke them with multiple taxation.

Insensitive leaders !!!

This is what you get when you make an illiterate a minister fo commerce and industry. Have these people lost all ideas on how to generate a revenue or what. Nigeria is blessed with many resources that are yet to be tapped and the are looking for 10 naira levies from bread. Let me tell that governor the possible effect of taxing a loaf of bread. When you add 50 naira to a bread that is sold at 250 naira, the burden will be transferred to the consumer and the consumer will now change his demands, may be to bond. What do you think will happen? The Baker will close the business and unemployment will increase. The company possibly pay cooperate tax, pay value added tax on the materials and now you want the to pay additional taxe on a loaf of bread. The problem is not even about paying the levies but can they account for it. The problem is 80% of our leaders are full time politicians and never own a shop. Look at president Buhari, he has never managed a kiosk for his life upon all the money he has, how will he manage Nigeria

I hope Ebira people where Yahya Bello hails from are exempted from paying this tax. Maybe Ebira people don't eat bread sha. When they were supporting him because he's an Ebira man, they refused to agree that he was a punishment to Kogites.
