Yoruba, Igbo And Acculturation (or Multiculture) by Nobody: 6:27am On Nov 21, 2011 |
Just observing the acculturation of Igbos. Could this be because of their close mixture with Yoruba people? This picture is of Igbo couples, yet the man dons the Yoruba cultural attire. This is also a picture of Igbo Ofala ceremony, yet one can clearly see the traditional Yoruba agbadas/ lace. PS: The colorful caribbean festival feather hat is not from Yoruba culture. www.nairaland.com/attachments/564817_obi_of_onisha_jpg7f6881ce6743b238073d68f43b0b0039 www.nairaland.com/attachments/565683_KINSMEN_3_jpgf76215831250e409c5fa51fc45cfe4a9 for those who do not know, this is a typical Igbo traditional attire. Red hat and the dress-like red (usually black with picture animation) attire. www.nairaland.com/attachments/564818_obi_palace_jpg16ff0560109e1c085167acb3380265b4 |

Since when did those attire become a Yoruba exclusively dress style? Did Yoruba invent it? The hat, the beads, the wrapper, lace are all Yoruba? Okay ooh. Yoruba invented the sun shining on them, the sand they are standing on, and even the bird used to make the hats. Ileke, did you smoke too much Igbo today? Is that why you are so obsessed with Igbo or do you just envy Igbo too much? Which one na? 2 Likes |

One_Naira: Obviously yes. A Yoruba traditional attire. Can you say the red hat is a Yoruba attire? PS: Try not to get sentimental over this, just a lil cultural history for the big boys. Yoruba invented the sun shining on them, the sand they are standing on, and even the bird used to make the hats. Last time I checked my Bible. God was the creator of the earth and the sun. Only a foolish man would praise another man for God's creation. |

Another Igbo/Igbo wedding I heard that the chick WAS a nler. At first I thought it was a Yoruba/Igbo wedding, until someone confirmed otherwise. |

One_Naira: No mocking, as you say. Just enjoy the thread. No need to start hating Yoruba just because of simple cultural mixture |

Ileke-IdI: I do not see any culture mixture which defeats the purpose of the thread. The only thing so far that supports the thread is the last picture with the man's hat and the woman's gele. Gele being a yoruba creation is even debatable but we'll give it to yoruba since they are trying to take another man creation and claim na their own. |

^^^ Even they do not have the same swagga as the Yoruba man This is Yoruba man I see that Igbos are now trying to imitate the cultural similarity of Yorubas, Hausas and Arabs. Even though Yorubas design are more detailed with traditional assortments like lace, ankara, adire, etc. 2 Likes |

Ileke-IdI: I know you want to turn this into an igbo vs. yoruba bigotry topic so i won't give you that satisfactions and I hope umu ndi-igbo will follow suit when they see this. Which pain? you be doctor? Abeg commot face for here, I see no cultural mixture, all I see is a Yoruba woman trying to steal another man creation and claim as their own with laughable swag. One_Naira: The one you're clearly and obviously displaying on this thread. Chillazz, the influence is only going to spread more. First it was the attire, then they're not completing it with our traditional hat. It's something to celebrate, not sth to hate. lol. If the Edos (who are closer to Yoruba) can do it, anybody can. |
Re: Yoruba, Igbo And Acculturation (or Multiculture) by OneNaira6: 7:37am On Nov 21, 2011 |

One_Naira: Binis are not the only ones being influence. This is due to the large intertribal marriages between the Yorubas and people of Edo state. Just like you have Cross River tribes influencing the Igbos cultural heritage, due to large intertribal marriages. |

Re: Yoruba, Igbo And Acculturation (or Multiculture) by Nobody: 7:48am On Nov 21, 2011 |
One_Naira: Bini's influence on Yoruba is still out for the jury to decide. But being specific on modern influence, no tribe has yet to try that on the Yorubas. Each decade we make additional changes to our culture abd tradition. Our current wedding attire (with the fan) was not what it was 20/30yrs ago. Our agbada are even more sophisticated than what the Hausas and Arabs can imagine. Bini empire's influence can only be seen in some part Ondo state. |
