It has a pattern.

They will play along for you to give them your undivided attention.
When they realised that you've agreed to their request, you then see the beast being unleashed.
They manipulate you to do their biddings.
They deny you what you get from them and others, thereby placing you in the scarcity zone.
You start to over do and sometimes literally beg for what you're usually being offered in abundance initially.
Before you know it, you begin to channel all your attention and resources to win their love.

At some point, you begin to assess your fruitless investment on them and the damage already being done to yourself (waste of your valuable time, attention, resources etc), but then you may choose not to leave, so as to hopefully 'recoup some of your investment'.

This is the best time to leave, to prevent further damage.
