Badgers14: If it is 'a share' they are after, maybe that can be arraigned but you will be shocked to hear that the moment you start your Refuse Management Company, one 'Big Man Politician' from somewhere will suddenly realise you are making money from it and then decide to use his children or a front to setup a sham Refuse management Company and INSIST that ONLY THAT COMPANY can do refuse Management Business in that state, and your Company is ruined. I have seen things like this happen a lot, let me share my own experience. I once submitted a complete, packaged and fully funded proposal to Govt, the DG said Govt is not ready because there is no fund, three months down the line, l saw another company doing exactly the same project but like an amateur (infact, you could easily see that they dont have the knowledge at all) and when l checked their Registration details at CAC, l saw that the company was registered about three weeks after l met the DG of the Govt Agency, with my proposals and when l dug further, l realised it was the same Agency that was sponsoring the Project. That really got me annoyed and l went to do further search on the Project Manager, found out that it was the Cousin of the DG who is not even a graduate nor knowledgeable in that field. Long story, cut short, l petitioned and wanted to go to Court but my Lawyer, after contact with their legal dept, made it clear to me that under our laws, the Agency has the right to determine who it gave jobs to and when it initiates any contract and that since l dont have a 'Patent' over the technology, l cannot claim that no one else can implement it! But in essence, the DG stole my project, gave it to his Cousin to implement at over ten times what it would have ordinarily cost and TODAY, the project is dead and money is gone. By the way, Armed Robbers came knocking on my door for the first and only time in my life, around that period but they did not steal anything, just fired shots into the house and left. Friends told me it was a "warning shot" from those l am dragging issues with. I just gave up on Nigeria, its not worth dying for. Too violent, too dangerous and too risky for normal humanbeings. 5 Likes |

Focusmind: I agree completely. There are risks everywhere. Let me cite an instance here. I’m working on a massive project that requires nothing less than hundreds of thousand cements. The risks and the odds are just too many. Here’s what the govt did: - they partnered Lafarge to supply us at official company price to ensure the project keep going without any cause for complaints. The risks were mitigated by putting systems and control in place. 1 Like

jajeri3216: I think you should, it will give a better perspective of the issue. It is important to establish without doubt, where the Crack started from, that would explain a lot of things. For example, a Crack that starts from the Top (Roof/Lintel level) is treated differently from a Crack that starts from the Bottom (Foundation, below window level), because they have different causes. But if a man can build it, a man can repair it. Be Calm. 2 Likes |

Badgers14: I agree once again but why am I still buying at official rates when the whole nation is complaining. We will achieve more if we work together than work simultaneously. There’s a huge market out there. The suppliers knew it. They also knew our biggest weakness is lack of unity. Construction risks are everywhere. Risk management must be designed to plan, monitor and control those measures needed to prevent everyone from exposure to risk. Well like egunmogaji2 rightly said “We are in Nigeria.” ______ Talking about risks won’t take it away but providing measures to control the risk and manage any residual risks will. |

saydfact: Baba, the koko is “A loud mind is greater than a loud mouth.” What I see almost everywhere in Nigeria is ‘problem talk.’ It is a conversation that focuses heavily on the details of an issue without ever actually producing a solution. If the regular conversations we have here is a road then problem-talk is a roundabout we drive on forever. Problem Talks sounds like this: Nigerians are bad. Contractors are terrible. Architects are saucy. Suppliers are unfaithful. Govt is useless. In 2002 (before corona ),things were better... Talking about problems ain’t bad but getting stuck in the cycle of problem talk is. 3 Likes |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by jaytime(m): 1:47am On Nov 15, 2020 |
jaytime:The carpenter here, was right but not totally. I'm sure he was talking about hanging the POP on the Tie Beams of the roof work. This cannot be done without supporting the wood work with some 2x2 woods. This system requires lining and nailing of 2x2 woods untop of the Tie Beams at most 2ft intervals to create hangers for POP. The system is fast replacing the conventional ceiling noggin where you have to suspend the noggin underneath the roof work with bracing. The advantages of this particular method is that it saves materials/labour cost and also creates enough space for the ceiling to go as high as possible. Please note, this is only done for POP and Drop(Suspended) ceilings. So if you are not sure of doing either of the 2, pls don't go for this. 1 Like

I stand to be corrected, that picture is an Arc Welding Machine. Not an Inverter Welding machine or did l miss something? Edit: As long as it is portable enough and does the job. The only thing is that Arc Welding machines are Transformer controlled while the Inverter Welding machines are all Electronics switching, low noise and less heat, maybe more efficient |

One4me: Maybe I’m wrong but this is ‘Arc Welding Machine’ in the picture below though. They both look alike but they’re different. There’s even a palm-size model. I’ll try get pics and update this post later on.

michlins: The one in the last pic requires very BIGGGGG generator. The earlier one posted can be powered using 5kva generator. I’d use the latter machine when welding thicker gauge. The inverter welding machine will do every household job (doors, gates, tank towers, etc) 1 Like |

N3xt the way that welder is joining those channels no be am or maybe I'm not seeing that well. You join them in an "Z" form. Let's say it's a 6 by 4 channel, you will have to cut one tip of the channel by 3 by 6. Like eh, you divide the middle of the channel by 2 and then cut it by the width. That way, it's more resistant to breaking than joining it end to end in an "I" form. I don't have the pictures to show you what I mean but maybe later today, I will have to draw it out on a piece of paper. My 2 cents 1 Like |

I for buy start and weld but those things are like ogbanje. You can get to a site and it will start up fine but can't weld. The mechanic will tell you it's the welding diode a d that you will have to go to Onitsha to know if you can find a compatible one. Onitsha will tell you maybe Lagos go get am and if your village people really want something from you, Lagos go tell you say e no dey. Happened to a friend of mine. Focusmind: If we, Nigerians don't invest first in the country, it is foolhardy to expect foreign investors to troop in droves. Nigeria is a big market but not economically bouyant. The average personal income (purchasing power) is low. When it comes to the internal investment climate with regards to uncertainty, there's only one 'thing' that is holding the nation down: EXCHANGE RATE POLICY. Not kidnappers, not corrupt politicians, not bad roads, not adequate power supply, not lack of fiber optic ( broadband). These are the symptoms of lack of internal investment. The cause of our ailment is the poor and incompetent management of the Naira rate against international currencies - the Naira rate to the Dollar. This started from the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP). I will give you a very practical and familiar example - myself. I'm in the Diaspora investing in Nigeria so I am a foreign investor. Abi no be so. Now (For example) I have a property with long term tenants that gives me N5 mil per annum in rent. During President Goodluck Jonathan's regime, the average Naira exchange rate to the GBP was stable at N300. Then, I repatriate £16,000 per annum back to Britain from rental income. As I type, the Naira to Pound rate is 600. So now I repatriate £8,000 from the same investment. That's about half of my income gone into thin air for no practical or business management reasons. Just government incompetence that I have no control over. Absolutely nothing I can do other than to increase rent. If I do this, the tenants (traders) will transfer the increase into the price of their products and poverty is let loose over the country. This is the situation we are in since SAP. Now you can see if I were a property foreign investor like for example airline company (Virgin Nigeria), Dunlop, Bata, A.G Leventis, Layland, Volkswagen, Peugeot etc that are mandated to repatriate funds home for their shareholders overseas, what do you think they will do? With a dwindling income not from lack of trading but from the inability of the government to stabilize the exchange rate, they will do what they did - close shop and unleash unemployment. This is what is happening in Nigeria. The foreign exchange regime or lack of foreign exchange regime is killing Nigeria slowly but surely. Any administration that can stabilize the exchange rate for two terms, Nigeria will be better. Nigeria's biggest problem is not corruption, but lack good governance and competent institutional managers of the polity (economy). 9 Likes 2 Shares |

diordaves:Over 12years ago i have being complain the method CBN handle exchange(forex), I attended the yuan swap enlightenment forum i observed CBN gave window to bid for forex, i was surprised, i ask a question demand & supply how will CBN curb it. because in Nigeria man-made scarcity & ability to hoard forex rest in our blood, the response i heard was we will control it. The whole crowds scream, CBN is our greatest problem, their policy is always against business environment. For CBN unable to silent blackmarket it show how weak is the institution. Instead CBN to attack forex, they are mean to attack Naira, the increase rate of poverty in the land. I will always say it, Forex policy is being mis-manage. Investing in Nigeria is good when in forex, once its break to naira that is the end. No significant value anymore. #KillBlackmarketnow 1 Like |
