Many Nigerians dont have sense, even with the benefit of hindsight. Back in the days of Regions, there was resource control and fiscal autonomy. The Regions got 50% of the profits of what came out their land, 25% went to the federal government and the rest 25% went into a general account for the development of all the Regions. This translated to 70% derivation

But the North wanted economic and political control of Nigeria and Regionalism did not allow them to do that. So Gowon broke up the 4 Regions, created 12 states of which Rivers was one of them.

Gowon gave the Rivers but stole everything from them. Today, they get 13% derivation from the 70 they used to get. They lost their resources and their autonomy. Today, Nigeria is under the control of the North.
