Please, be careful when making a transaction at a POS terminal. Some POS agents can send your ATM card details to fraudsters.

• HOW IT IS BEING DONE

When you go to a POS terminal to make a transaction, he/she will collect your ATM card and slot it into an ATM machine. After few seconds, he/she will tell you that the POS machine is malfunctional (i.e not working properly). He/She will tell you that you should wait while he/she bring another POS machine inside.

When he/she goes inside, your ATM card will be snapped (including the surface and below) with a smartphone. He/She will surely come out with another POS machine, but you will not know that your ATM card had been snapped and sent to fraudsters! The fraudsters will now use your ATM card details and make transactions online!

Your card can be used for online transactions without your pin or otp and at the same time your card can't be used for online transactions without your pin or otp... It all depends on the bank and card you're using... That's why some card gets rejected when trying to make online transactions.

No need to go into details, like I said earlier.. It all depends on your bank and card type.

i like all d comments here it shows we are very aware of what is happening these days.........the top notch advise i have read here is keep little money in accounts where u use atm and pos, ur main account should not be available for mobile banking.....right now i will apply these two suggestions now now

Yes but it depends on thr platform the card is being used, For a debit card used in Nigeria, it will require to be authenticated with a pin or OTP, but when used on a foreign sires or merchant, the card number, expiry date and cvc code is enough to complete a transaction, infact most POS machine outside the country requires just a swipe or tap if the card and machine is NFC enable. So the advice is to be taking serious, this fraudsters can use your card information for foreign transaction or sites that don't require PIN or OTP authentication

From my experience, this used to be the case. These days it's extremely hard to see an ecommerce site weather local or Western not requiring otp...

I was with my mechanic few days back, while his account was been emptied in real-time. He showed me the debit alert and I asked him where his ATM card was, he said it has been missing since a week plus. I told him to get his Card blocked immediately. The fraudstars bought airtime with his card without his PIN.

It's only work if they outwitted you and you reveal your pin to them, the only thing that could solve this problem is never ever to reveal your pin to any POS MACHINES CARRIER.

How are you sure that a camera has not been planted to spy on you while punching your PIN on the POS machine?

I had a similar experience with one of these big online retail store in Nigeria where the guy (their staff) was using his phone to record me while I was inputting my ATM -PIN. Since the POS machine was declining, he told me that he would bring another POS machine, went in ( I knew he had captured my card details) and came back with another machine that eventually worked.

I had to also be ahead of him with my little tech knowledge.

True and besides banks know your patterns ...what you purchase and your spending range any item not really commonly purchased by you will not go through. It’s like profiling they monitor your habits.

Also the address has to match the one on file and don’t forget your phone puts you at a particular place at a time so when disputing charges it is easy to return to the scene of the crime and have evidence that this is where it occurred. Lastly choose Standard Chartered they don’t play that.

Pls don't die in your ignorance. If you don't know, how hard is it for you to learn from others. For those who pay for services on foreign sites, it is common knowledge that you don't need the Card Pin or OTP before completing a transaction on some of the sites. If you don't know it is possible, how hard is it for you to learn?
