The country is too poor to have such .Even if all the fantastic structures are put in place ,it will not stop the hawkers,and street urchin ( supported by politicians ) from defacing the place with thier dirty and rickety buses, dirt and human waste. In the UK, if you are living in the city, you pay council tax which ranges from 60000 to 100000 naira monthly depending on the city. That money goes into making the cities look nice

That's why uk cities have great streets.

If we charged that kind of tax in Nigeria, Nigerians would scream.

The maximum tax to gdp ratio if am correct in Africa is 16.5% countries like South Africa, even Ghana we call common is on the list, Kenya.
Nigeria is even below that.
Some 2nd party countries or second industral countries is 21.1% or so for tax to gdp ratio.
When comparing start from countries that are doing relatively well compared to Nigeria you will see big wahala dey Nigeria.

Technological innovations and mechanism to build them in quantities is difficult, symmetrical cities, pavements, roads, trees and maintaining them –essentially the business of bricks and mortar is not.

Yes u are right .Govt should create an enabling environment for the citizens to strives, and they will be surprised at how high Nigerians can go, if we could just have constant electricity ,good transport system ,tax weavers for new businesses and one digit interest loan rate granted to citizens that are interest in doing business . In fact, govt will have more revenue in taxes than ever before- when these businesses start paying taxes .
I don't know why our leaders are so blind and stupid . Good transport system , constant electricity , One digit interest rate on bank loan , provision of govt business loan to elegible citizens without bias / nepotism .Then they should stand bye and see how this country will strive beyond thier imagination .

In as much as our leaders are very corrupt, we have been made to examine and judge the situation of our country one-sidedly.
Corruption is a two way thing. If Nigerians leaders are corrupt then UK leaders(Western leaders) are also corrupt for continuing to collect loots decades after decades from the so called "third world" countries of people living below poverty line.
All these buildings and roads are built and maintained from exploiting the resources across Africa, if not how did these countries look like before interactions with Africans and the colonisation of Africa?
Nigerian leaders don't act indepently if they do why do the so called advanced and civilised people that preach human right, good governance, NGO, sustainable development continue to open their doors to the corrupt leaders from the "underdeveloped" country? Won't that seem contrary to what they preach?

Until we realize that our undevelopment is not only due to bad leadership and that we need to find it root cause and profer indigenous solutions, we will keep comparing.

Simple, Nigerians are not ready to make our Nation great!
