This was a verbal assertion from a young MP. Please I am not arguing or defending nobody. Adesina was accused of non-transparency in his first term as president of AFDB by the West but was cleared. GEJ was accused of preventing the rescue of the Chibok girls by the UK media but he gave his defense. Gowon was never a saint, but an allegation of that magnitude needs ample proof sir.
That is exactly what you are doing defending Nigerian leaders. Gowon said Nigeria problem was not money but how to spend it.

Yet the country was still underdeveloped and there was massive corruption.

I believe you understand English. Stop trying to aggressively put your views on me. I have my own unbiased mode of thinking. Gowon is not my brother. I have not gotten a dime from the Nigerian government. I am simply asking for proof to back up the words spoken by the MP.
Just like tomorrow someone saying you delight in indulging underage boys in anal intercourse. Its a believable truth because a few men are perverts. Your only defense will be a reasonable proof.

UK knows their facts, $600 billions dollars was stolen from Nigeria since 1960. And they have the intelligence to know all the culprits, 99% of whom got away with their crimes and are still walking the streets free.

Where was the ample proof Abacha stole?.. of course they have the records to back it up. Moreover you are merging allegations of transparency and Chibok girls with looting and embezzlement.

What facts do you need that IBB,Abdusalami,Tinubu,Saraki or Dino Melaye stole? This is coming from United Kingdom, they have their facts and know their customers that hide their loot in their country. It might have been a gross exageration, but the parliamentarian knows Gowon stored some of his loot in United Kingdom or one of their tax havens like Jersey or Isle of Man.

WHAT ABOUT THE TRILLIONS THE BRITISH STOLE FROM 1897 TO 1960?

WHY WAS NIGERIA STILL AN ''UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRY'' WITH NO POWER STATIONS, UNIVERSITIES, OR EXPRESSWAYS, AND AN ILLITERACY RATE OF 95% IN 1960 AT INDEPENDENCE, AFTER 70 YEARS OF UNINTERRUPTED BRITISH RULE?

WHAT DID THE BRITISH DO WITH THE TRILLIONS THEY MADE FROM EXPORTING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES?

WHO ARE THEY TO TALK ABOUT NIGERIAN CORRUPTION WHEN THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL THIEVES AND LOOTERS WHO HAVE STILL NOT RETURNED A PENNY THEY STOLE?

Just Negodu... So if the British stole from you, you now justify it by looting from your country's purse. Why can't we see that as a motivation to change things just like China and other Asian countries robbed by the same British did

Are you aware Gowon struggled to fund his university education while in the UK? A reporter snapped him queuing for food at the university cafeteria and the picture trended all over the world. Murtala Mohammed was so embarrassed that he quickly dispatched TY Danjuma to London to beg him to return to Nigeria. Gowon refused to return and the decided to be paying t him pension and stipend so that he can fund his education properly.

When Obasanjo the payment of his pension and stipend as a result of the Dimka coup, Nigerians in the UK contributed money for him to finish his program.

So, how is it possible for Gowon to move half of CBN money to UK and still be struggling to fund his university education?

Yakubu Gowon was President from 1966-1975(9 years), so because he lost his power he become broke. There was massive corruption under his regime, despite him saying money was not Nigeria's problem, but how to spend it.

Gowon was in Kampala attending OAU meeting when the coup took place. He was never allowed back into Nigeria after the coup.

Nobody is arguing that he did not steal money. All our leaders did. However, the allegation that he moved half of CBN money to the UK is a big lie. He moved to the UK a poor man. The evidence available doesn’t show someone that lived like he had half of CBN money at his disposal. That a young UK parliamentarian said something doesn’t make it accurate. The least we can do is to fact check and try to place the pieces together. In this case, it doesn’t add up at all.

Hopefully, NAPTU2 would come out and educate some of you guys. He’s an authority when it comes to the history of military rule in Nigeria.

Moved to UK a poor man after being President for 9 years of a corrupt African oil producing country. Which Nigerian leader keeps their loots in local banks?

Even the parliamentarian did not provide evidence, instead he said, "It is said". People who say that are merely repeating rumours. He should tell us who said and what the evidence is.

There was definitely corruption during the Gowon Administration, but like the Shagari Administration, the allegations were not against Gowon but against people that served under him.

There were two main reasons that Yar'Adua, Garba and Abdullahi removed Gowon and they are

1) Because he refused to hand over to civilians in 1976 as he had promised.

2) Because he refused to punish people in his administration that were corrupt.

That's why Murtala sacked and jailed a lot of people (especially civil servants) that were corrupt.

They set up panels to investigate everybody. Only two governors were cleared of corruption. All the others were indicted.

People like Adeyemi Bero were sacked and tried. Eko Court was recovered from him.

Even the chief justice, Professor Elias, was removed from office, yet there was not a single charge against Gowon.

Military governments like to accuse their predecessors of every bad thing under the sun, in order to justify their coup and win favour from the masses. Why did the anti-corruption government of Murtala not charge Gowon with a single allegation of corruption?

Why did the Obasanjo regime, which declared Gowon wanted, not charge him with looting half the CBN?

Where is the evidence (not beer parlour rumour, but evidence)?
