NCAA Cautions Pilots, Others Over Adverse Weather In Nigerian Airports by presidency: 1:56pm On Dec 01, 2020 |
Dateline: 1st December, 2020 The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued Advisory Circular to caution Pilots, Airline Operators and others on severe dust haze/fog phenomenon prevalent in Nigerian airports. This adverse weather condition expected occurrence is to subsist from October in the far North; November over the North Central; and December over the Southern part of the country. In addition, early morning fog may also be experienced in the months ahead especially along the coastal areas in the South. With the issuance of this circular signed by the Director General, Capt Musa Nuhu, the NCAA-AEROMET-29 of August 2020 is accordingly cancelled. This weather advisory circular is necessary to bring forth the evolving weather information to the attention of all stakeholders who need to perform their roles. Therefore, to ensure safe and efficient flight operations during this period, Pilots, Operators and Air Traffic Controllers Pilots are directed to observe series of responsibilities enumerated below forthwith: Flight Crews/Operators and Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) shall be conversant with each aerodrome weather minima and ensure strict adherence to the requirements; Air Traffic Controllers may temporarily close airspace when hazardous weather conditions such as heavy fog or severe dust haze reducing the visibility to below airport operating minimal are observed or forecasted by Nimet; Pilots/Flight Crew Members shall obtain adequate departure, en-route and destination weather information and briefing from Nimet Aerodrome Offices prior to flight operations; and Pilots shall exercise maximum restraint whenever adverse weather is observed or forecast by Nimet and briefed passengers accordingly. Travelling public are however urged to exercise restraint and show understanding in this yuletide month as flights may be delayed or cancelled on account of weather situations. From the foregoing, the regulatory authority will expect strict compliance to this Advisory Circular as violation would be viewed seriously Signed: Sam Adurogboye GM, Public Relations. |

Air Traffic Controllers may temporarily close airspace when hazardous weather conditions such as heavy fog or severe dust haze reducing the visibility to below airport operating minimal are observed or forecasted by Nimet; I hope pilots and passengers listen and take this good advice to heart. Every lives matter. The 'ember' months are upon us. And may we all see the end of this pandemic year, We and all our friends and family members. Keep safe out there Nairalanders. 5 Likes 1 Share

Severe dust/haze is a real thing and this reduces visibility on the runway and makes landing difficult for pilots. Don't be surprised if your flight is cancelled at 800m low visibility or your pilot is forced to return to the airport he took off from after burning fuel hovering around. 2 Likes |

Flying a plane in hazy weather is no joke. Not to talk of landing. But does this indicate that nigerian pilots are not able to fly using the ILS? In the developed world, where there is even more ruthless weather, the pilots use the "Instrumental landing system" to land the plane. Even a blind man using the ILS properly will land a plane. But what do I know, everything I know about aviation is from books and game simulations 1 Share

With morden aviation tech(instrument landing system), pilot's can now align the aircraft with the runway and land in zero visibility. So a dust haze shouldn't be much of a problem for a properly trained pilot But again do we have such technology in Nigeria? |

calculator123: The new Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is so real, you will be astonished, because now all the ground scenery that you fly over, is actual satellite imagery that is live-streamed via an internet connection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDTM5Wj6NX0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOe6Ls_q2Cg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHDH9jnF7CA |

In 2020? This country is a total joke. When you appoint Minister of Aviation, they are to Identify ways of improving service delivery and facilities upgrade within such ministries. But no, it is how to pad budget and rigmarole with Senators on what project they can inflate to cash out. The absurdity of appointees in Nigeria is further downplayed by the sort of human we have as President. The President is not in control of any aspect of the country. Nigeria is on auto-pilot. You can imagine Adesina claiming responsibility the other day for not including the Lekki Massacre in the President’s address. This is 2020 for damn sake, why should “dusty” weather prevent a plane from landing successfully. Pilots in saner climes can afford to shut their eyes now when approaching the airport due to the advancement of technology beyond the archaic manual calibrations of landing coordinates still deployed in Nigeria. Naija, which way? Only violent rejection of these ruling class may send the right signals to these old and corrupt elites that the youths are tired of this maladministration! |

spectator2001: Haba, Professor, take am easy now. Bad visibility and bad weather cause the cancellation or diversion of flights WORLDWIDE, despite auto-pilot capabilities, and other associated technology such as ILS that make full hands-off auto-lands possible. All the same, pilots can, and do decide to abort landings and divert to alternate airports, as a matter of routine safety considerations. |
