It was mere politcs even the yoruba unification was not historical and ife was never thier ancestral town ife was a religious town to the yorubas


The title oba has bern in the yoruba lexicon as far
As 16century when benin expanded into their territory that would be 6centuries now
Despite the long age it has been in Yoruba lexicon it remains foreign to them

Imagine benin supplying yoruba warriors fighting atilaries, controlling their lands, giving them kings, controlling their market, just imagine how the title oba would sound to them


When the oba of benin was being taken to calabar by the British they had to cover his face to avoid uprise from both benin areas and non edo territorie

He made a mistake of not foreseeing the end of the false political unification of benin people under yoruba umbrella he only saw the advantage of the name it would bring to his stool

He never proclaimed other yoruba monarchs to follow suit but automatically the other yoruba bought into adding oba to thier title

The question every tribe should ask yoruba is why do they adopt the word oba as a generic term for kingship when already is known to adress a popular monarch

Before Oduduwa came to Ilè Ifè from Oke-Ogun, there were 13 autonomous villages in Ifè all headed by Obas, e.g. Obatala, Obalufon, etc.

The first Oba of Bini was Oranyan, a descendant of Oo'dua, before Oranmiyan, Bini was governed by the Ogiso.

The above logically proves that the titling of the position of an Oba in Yorubaland predates that of Bini

The position 'Oba' is a pure Yòrùbá word. It's direct translation should be Governor or Controller/Administrator.

O = The one/person that does something (a continuous tense)
Ba = Perch or Control

I just have to drop this comment before history gets distorted as usual.

The full position is called Oba T'ó Ba L'órí Ohun Gbogbo = The Controller that governs all things.

Then the position has titles. E.g The Controller of Oyo is referred to as Alaafin (Alaafin l'oruko oba ilu Oyo).

Oba = Position

If you believe that the indigenous word for king in Edo is oba then all Edo are Yoruba, because Yoruba started obaship,in fact Edeyoung you are not honest in treating these topic a lot of Edo historians mentioned the ogisos not as myth but as history, and they also mentioned that oranmiyan displaced the ogisos and started the oba dynasty, but here you are because you hate Yoruba's denying that fact even though it is obvious
