It's actually from this forum that I heard that bride price in Igboland runs into millions and that Igbo men are the devil incarnate that oppress their female folks. No thanks to naive, bigoted, or bitter non-Igbos and their self-hated, ostracized, or deranged Igbo counterparts. 18 Likes 3 Shares |

In my village (in Anambra) bride price is just ₦400..,just as the op said, it's the lists that normally makes it look big, and this list is negotiable. In my entire life, I have never seen where parents refused to give out their daughter for marriage just because the item in the lists ain't complete. You can negotiate to bring it down. Though some items listed are compulsory. A man can marry a lady with 2 million naira in a family where another man married the lady's sister with ₦200, 000. So it all depends on how the man present himself. 7 Likes |

Am from imo state OP MY place if you don't have at least 350k you can't or won't be able to traditionally marry your wife It's ridiculous to be given a list to a young man just starting life. Our elders are not helping matters. 19 Likes |

bigseank: Leave them... It is already backfiring on them. Go research the region with highest number of desperate and aging spinsters. A lot of my friends from there either married from abroad, from less greedy regions, or are simply co-habiting. They will eventually bow to the pressures of the fast changing times! 12 Likes |

For my village, the bride price itself is not more than 100 naira. The things that consume money are things for the ceremony. And you are not necessarily mandated to celebrate. Just give palm wine to the UMUNNA, and that is all 9 Likes 1 Share |

Angelfrost:As if he doesn't know, some villages will collect N20 and give you list of nearly N700k, when you complain they'll tell you that they only collect N20 from the bride price. Imo state bikonu, amend the price so that other Igbos will be happy marrying ur daughters. 4 Likes |

Why this useless explanation? We all know that just as Fulanis rear cattle, Igbos rear women. When it's time for marriage, they maximise profit because those female children are sold out in marriage. This disrespectful attitude is why women aren't allowed to inherent property in Igboland. 10 Likes |

Thanks OP for this. In my town in Attah Njaba LGA a person with 250k will finalize all his marriage right with traditional ceremony. Orlu zone mainly don’t overkill when it comes to traditional marriage. The 4 days wine carrying which is done one day with the Igba Nkwu is quite affordable in my place. People should stop generalizing the rites done in some parts of Mbaise or Mbano to stereotype the whole Imo. It's similar to what is obtainable in Kalabari where you keep paying marriage bills till you get old, or the nonsense done in some parts of Akwa-Ibom. Before you come out to judge a tribe, a state or a people it's good you carryout proper research and not jump on a stereotypical bandwagon. 14 Likes |
