He did not betray his own Army, his Army could not stand that of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Afonja is Yoruba and when two brothers fight, one of them does not go and invite an outsider, to fight his brother, along with him, that is the 'blood betrayal' history talked about.
How does that amount to betraying his own soldiers?

To compound his problem, the 'outsider' (Fulani) that he invited to fight his Yoruba brothers, could not help him achieve victory but then 'conquered and enslaved' him and made themselves his Lord.
It would have been better for him, if Alaafin of Oyo Empire conquered him, at least he will still be subject to one of his own, (eventually they would settle, the way 'Ife and Modakeke' have finally settled) ...... than becoming a subject of a foreigner Fulani, ON HIS OWN LAND, till today.!
