NwadykExcel: It's nice to reason this way but as someone who has passed through the system, I will advice you while studying to acquire a certificate, make sure you learn a digital skill. It's not about the paper called certificate but it's all about what you can do. The question you need to ask yourself after graduating is; aside the certificate, what problem can I beat my chest that I can confidently provide a solution to? Nigeria schools don't teach us many things. After the so many Engineering Laboratory practicals that run from 200 level to 400 level, we later find out that we've learnt nothing to help us succeed in the outside world. Every other skills you need to succeed in life, you will acquire them all by yourself. Qualification is good but not without experience. Hence, do well to acquire some soft/digital skills using some world class platforms such as udemy. You can learn project management and acquire the skill and other well sort after digital skills and you will be amazed how those will end up putting food on your table and paying the bill by the time you come of age and start living alone. 5 Likes 1 Share |

NwadykExcel:You don't know where you are, there is a strong reason everyone is mentioning you. So when you have all these qualifications, you then do what? Apply for a job? You'll be considered extremely lucky to get a high paying job of 400k monthly which is less than $1,000. Money yahoo Boys blow in 1 night , money Instagram influencers make in a week! Except you wish to become the next Elon Musk and apply that knowledge elsewhere. Nigeria will humble you 7 Likes 2 Shares |

revived: It is a risk worth taking. For the best result, one needs to have something doing, anything, be it, bricklayer or taxi driver. the income from this will keep you going without touching your crypto-investment or rushing to sell. The soro soko generation needs to get much involve in the business. I bought 10000 ETH when it was $.6 back in 2015 with my school fees. it is risky anyway. so guys be careful. Crypto has produced millions of millionaires most especially in the Asian countries. Just buy and keep it for several years you don't need to do anything. keep doing your small job and keep your mouth shot. Secondary school education is enough for someone to become a president. 8 Likes |

My backup plan was my hobby, software development. I was just so interested in it and by the grace of God, it has fetched me millions, taken me outside the country, and still bringing opportunities. I was a serious student while at the university but I began to ask myself questions, What differentiates me from the average student? How do I stand out? By reading and passing exams like every other student? Aside from reading and passing exams, what else can I do? What else can I do that can bring in money? I realized I had no marketable skill and decided to pick one, software development, while at the university and I am glad I did. 6 Likes |

Newman20: Bro the thread clearly says, "what's your next plan if school doesn't work out"? Not "is skill worth more than education"? Part of his comment was "My main plan and back-up plan all involves me getting an education so if you like be there and be doing "vocational skill" .we'll see how far that really gets you" . So according to the thread's title, does one still opt for education when it has clearly failed him in a failed country like Nigeria? That's why his comment is laughable, because it doesn't work that way in a setting like Nigeria. And yes, you can be successful through a skill you acquired without finishing or going through higher institution. 2 Likes |

NwadykExcel: You are ordinary 100 level (secondary school to me) and think getting a masters in Mechanic from a Nigerian university is an achievement? Locally you would still need connection to find work. Overseas, your qualification is a joke and they are automating things (you would need advance knowledge in IT because many of those jobs would disappear in the next 10 years, which due to strikes, would be around the time you get your masters degree). I would really love to know what you mean by "true education" and as a 100 leave student can you honestly say you are gaining 'education' or just doing 'academic exercise'... This is Nigeria where a VC advice on graduation day is to learn handwork. 6 Likes |

Here in Germany, the only thing they care about is "can you get the job done"? Yes...they test you..if you can ace the interview process, you have the job. Degrees only assist you in landing interview or getting hr attention of the company request it. Many managers in amazon, facebook, google etc do not have a degree. Learn a skill..IT...networking, software development, PC repairs, software, learn excel(you cannot succeed in modern world without it). 6 Likes |

Chevrolet076: Your academic achievements were never in question, sir. I never slightly suggested you didn't go to school and I sincerely don't know where you got that impression from. Most importantly, this is not about you but about your post I quoted. You said that Nigeria will make him wise up and I'm saying we should reconsider our choice of words so they don't come off as curses. It's good to have other plans but saying Nigeria will do this or that to him cause of his decisions does seem more like a threat than an advice. The key word there is "will" which denotes certainty. I clearly see the source of opinion but what works for A might not work for B. Like I said, some people still made it in Nigeria with thier education regardless of their GPA. So while it's good to advise him, we can't say for certain what his fate would be. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

Newman20: It ought to be clear to you my response was directed to NwadykExcel. Do you have an idea of how many graduates this country has presently?? The number is embarrassingly too large, how many decades of churning out jobless graduates again Well I wouldn't go into further details on that so I don't hear it too much... I don't think I hinted anywhere I'm against education, the op asked for backup plans if education failed and he said his backup was education still...how is that plausible in the first place when the question had been conditioned so??! Think about that please. We claim the country is saturated with businesses and entrepreneurs already but is that so?? What I think we fail to realize is that the world has moved off into the information age and the industrial era is getting into its final close. When people say they are getting a skill I don't think it's the tailoring, automobile mechanic, fashion design thingy per se. The world as we know it today is more a global village and thankfully we are getting access to information more readily via the internet, office works are getting out of fashion...the world is moving off into cloud computing and people who posses good skills are ever needed. Traditional "professionals" are very much less in demand. What it takes to thrive in this time anywhere are skills, not certificates. Why do you think most graduates around here are regarded as 'unemployable'? You probably should be asking yourself right now, what makes a graduate employable??! Skills my man, not the "this is to certify that ......" America today as we know it was built out from economic disadvantage off the efforts of nothing but pure skill and grit, very industrious men who displayed great passion gave the foundation of what you see today as the number one nation. Men who showed skill and not just intellect or academia alone. Remember according to the op, this wasn't a choice between classroom education and/or skills acquisition, he said a 'backup plan'. If there's one who failed to address the op correctly I suspect it should be the young man I initially responded to. To address the issue of businesses failing to make profit, how do we expect this not to be. The flow of money is greatly outbalanced hence the constant failures recorded by people going into business (which in most cases are people who have failed to do due diligence). Again, it isn't a "vs'' matter! -Lloyd 3 Likes |
