Other land borders to be reopened on or before December 31, says minister

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .) , has approved the immediate reopening of four of Nigeria’ s land borders .
The Minister of Finance , Budget and National Planning , Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council , said rice and poultry products remained banned .

The Federal Government had in August 2019 closed its land borders to curtail smuggling .
The four affected borders, according to the minister , are Seme border in South- West , Ilela border in the North - West , Mfun border in the South -South and Maigatari border in the North-West.

She said others would be reopened on or before December 31, 2020.

She added that the ban on the importation of commodities such rice and poultry products was still in force despite the reopening.

This is very good but there is a need to strengthen the border policing and management mechanisms to avoid a relapse into the conditions that led to the closure in the first place.

The closure was selective. E no dey affect, bandits politicians ,bokoharam and herdsmen It was meant for some people, just like it was during covid lockdown. Some persons were locked in to die of hunger, while some traveled even with jets balling .. I even thought they said second wave is in aso rock already, so is it now they will open it?

Hmm

1) What is the fate of local production of rice?
2) Those who took loans to start Groundnut oil production?
3) Those who just acquired processing equipment for chicken

These products are banned but we know these products will find its way conveniently into the country.

We seem to be clueless in this part of the word.

You closed border to curb importation of arms and boost local production but the reverse is the case. Therefore, investigate why there wasn’t any positive change and adjust.

Nigeria will be great only if we voice out.

OK.
Rice should be imported too o.
The nonsense we are producing here is even costlier than the foreign rice.
LET rice go back to what we use to buy it.

Meaning when you take away food from poverty, then poverty seize to exist.

Smugglers hardly use major road borders. There are usually shortcuts or paved paths where they push through contrabands. FG should focus on blocking those routes and making sure our officers at the borders stop taking bribes.

Let them go and sit down jaw. Very very confused government with no working policy.

Yhu reopened borders and still left some commodities that are very important to the common man banned.

What then is the essence of the reopening?

Meanwhile, some people have been smuggling in the same banned commodities, especially rice and selling to us at a very exorbitant prices.

If not stupidity, shouldn't they have realised the border closure only brought hardship to Nigerians?

Except some farmers who have taking advantage of the border closure to hike the price of their locally produced commodities, who else has the closure been helpful to?
