Sir what's the update from the Nandini and Cu986 which is more preferable.
cu986 is really high yielding, but a well managed Saira/Nandini farm will outlast it.

Nandini did well but they are a bit darker than saira. The cu986 were so white and some of my buyers didn't like it. But there was serious challenge with the area where the cu986 was planted. I think the problem is with the soil. The yield was poor and after about 4 harvests the fruits were getting yellowish before harvest and I couldn't sell anymore.

I have planted all the thia agro seed and the east west seeds too. i remember saying it that nandini will beat the cu986 and even there cu971 too. their cu971 has low resistance to downy mildew and it doesnt produce that much, its a waste of money for people like me, i will always recommend nandini any day, i can even say it might beat there cu999 too....

you did not state the variety, but several things can cause poor germination,(1)if you put too much soil on top of the seeds it may have a hard time coming out,(2)too little or too much watering,(3)not covered with palm fronds and exposed to direct sunlight (4)use of fresh manure on the nursery, there's an art to doing nursery on raised beds, after doing the bed apply manure and use rake to level it and break up clogs of manure, water thourghly, broadcast your seeds, use soil mixed with manure and sprinkle on top lightly, then cover with palm fronds, water next morning and your tomato seeds will germinate in 4 days,we even use tarpaulin to cover for the first 2 day to heat up the bed and stimulate germination, tomato is easy compared to hot peppers.

70-80% flowering on the Padma tomato farm, staking has started cause some crops are already bending,we are taking the lazy man short cut and using bamboo and nylon ropes used previously for cucumbers

thank you for your response Sir.
I mixed sand and dried manure at a ratio of 2:1 then I poured it into those sachet.
I watered them then I planted the seed.
I only planted the seed on the soil then I covered it with a little soil.
hope I am still on track

it is doubtful you are still on track, you been derailed along the line,we planted Padma and had 60% germination in 4 days, the more they stay in the soil without germination it gets rotten, from what I am seeing it's better to do nursery on bed and retransplant into the nylon in 10-12 days.

Pls lemme sound this warning now, tomato is less forgiving compared to most veggies, sometimes a lot happens that you didn't anticipate even after following GAP! I have been lucky not to face challenges, but deep down I know it's LUCK! Some disease and defects in tomato may have no known cure if it strikes, pls Oga Okoroemeka has years of experience in veggies cultivation, even if he is trying tomatoes now, he knows what to do and don't,( drips, mulch, nematodes control, proper bed spacing and height, nursery management, and nutrition) I didn't use mulch, I did it successfully, but the rate of fruit cracking due to high rainfall was alarming. Before you say I am negative and discouraging people, I am not saying it's impossible, but I just decided to say my mind. I kept shut some years ago when people dived into watermelon(some people will understand better), and I promised never to keep shut again if possible
I'm currious. Was considering trying it next year at the early start of rains and when rains will be receeding. What is the warning you should have shared about watermelon.

the issues they face range from improper fumigation. a very serious issue of weeding that is always taken for granted. but note this, watermelons don't like disturbance, so if you do manual weeding and move the crops carelessly, you may not like the experience. if you plant a wrong cultivar that is prone to cracking/splitting, then irregular rainfall may affect you greatly. then crop security from theft, insects, and RODENTS

I finally got to the end of this thread! grin grin
It has been a real eye opener and coupled with the power of screenshot I've learnt a whole lot more than I knew before. grin grin
Big ups to oga @ Okoroemeka (na man you be) cool , Ideepaul, FarmTech and other gurus who started this journey from page 1. You've done well smiley
I already have a small backyard garden where I've been planting vegetables since March (lockdown gave me the willpower to do this) and coupled with what I've learnt here, I decided to add cucumber planting also (just for my personal consumption). Ọga Okoroemeka has been of tremendous help. He responded promptly to my messages to him on WhatsApp and gave valuable insights.

I planted the seeds (cucumber) this evening and my fingers arre crossed. wink wink

Wish me well!

Shalom.

50% fruiting at the tomato farm,I read somewhere that Padma tomatoes produce 20-25 fruits as total yield before it dies,,,I don't think that figure is correct, because we are seeing up to 10 developing fruits on plants that still have a very long way to go,from what I am seeing if this crop turns out to be what I am strongly suspecting then it will be seriously interesting.

the major pitfall we discovered in a tomato farm project is insects, they are the main transmitters of tomato viral diseases,we followed a weekly insecticides application with lackadaisical approach thinking it is cucumbers that can live happily with whitefly,,not until we lost a few crops to tomato leaf curl virus that made us sit up and buckle hard to climb out of the pit, luckily we are able to crush the whitefly infestation while discarding 10-15 infected crops, the Battle of a tomato farm is won or lost at the Frontlines with insects, they are the enemy, from whiteflies, thrips, mites, hopper, caterpillars, etc

we are using a combination of punch(abamectin) and DD force(dichlorovous),I don't think any caterpillar variety will survive such bombardment, but we are still watching, but a mixture that crushed whiteflies will swat aside caterpillars with ease.
