Lightning360: Well are you based in Lagos or Abuja? Your comparison is quite confusing. Paying for? If you register for GRE, you can select any of the centers. ETS pays them for using their venue. So you wouldn't need to pay for anything extra. But if you mean tutorials, then you'll most probably pay for it. Yes you can create an ETS account and register directly for your exams. Some people experience difficulties using mastercard for payment. But you can give it a shot. Or better still, you can register with us for your exams. I'd start by congratulating you on your score; It's quite a high score. I have intentions of going for a masters in the U.S., and that would mean I need to start off by taking the GRE test. I'd like to communicate with you offline for heads up about how to be successful with the GRE test. Thank you. AlphaMaximus: |

I never get tired of asking questions here cos I know you guys will do perfect justice to it. So here goes nothing; a requirement that was included in submitting my graduate application is my CV, I am going for studies in Chemistry but ever since I left university I have only work in non- related fields to chemistry. My question now is should I disregard those experiences in my CV and pad it up or I should leave it as it is. Thanks and Regards |

AlphaMaximus: Hi, although your quantitative score is very good, generally speaking, it's on the low side for that programme. The average quant score for Stanford Engineering is 167. Your verbal and AWA scores are great and good respectively. However, since the quant score is the most important one for your intended course, you should definitely retake it or apply knowing that your chances at a Stanford admission are below average, based on your score, at least. Also, I think the application deadline has passed. If you really want to go to Stanford, you can try to get as close as you can to 170 against next year and work on your research experience and other parts of your application such as your LORs and SOP. If it's not a dealbreaker for you, apply to other places. See engineering school averages: https://magoosh.com/gre/2013/gre-scores-for-engineering-programs/ Take with a grain of salt. Good luck bro. 1 Like |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by okibeogezi: 11:22am On Dec 18, 2020 |
cdor777: With your scores, it's going to be an uphill battle to secure funding if you manage to get admission. My advice is to retake the GRE if you can. I'm applying to do a master's in Computer Science as well and I must say: CS is really competitive right now. The international competition, from China and India especially, is really fierce. Alternatively, if you can find places that actually do not consider the GRE at all – I have heard of a few places saying explicitly not to mention the GRE anywhere in your application – you should definitely apply since your GPA is okay. To be competitive though, you should have higher GRE scores. Something like Q: 160+, V: 150+, and AWA: 3.5+ would suffice for mid-range CS schools. Do as well as you can in your quant. Good luck bro. 3 Likes |

okibeogezi: Thanks for the input, due to time constraint, I won't be able to take another GRE exam, even the one I did I had to squeeze out time for preparation. I think I would go by your second advice of applying to schools that don't have GRE as a requirement and work on other aspect of my applications such as Writing good SoP and getting good letter of recommendations from my Faculty Professors 2 Likes |

Hello, you might want to consider Austin Peay State University (APSU) and Kent State University (KSU). Both have assistantship positions for computer science. I do know that the deadline to apply for assistantship at KSU is January 31, 2021. Moreso, I know a number of Nigerians on the M.S degree in Computer Science and Quantitative Methods at APSU. In addition, the acceptance rate of students at APSU is very high; with a your GPA, good SOP and strong recommendation... the sky's your limit. All the best! cdor777: 2 Likes |

Update on Fall 2021 Application: I have been an avid follower of this thread for over 2 years, before I began my Master's degree in the US (it's been a roller coaster, but profitable ). I applied to three schools for a Ph.D. in Earth and Energy Sciences/Geophysics/Geology degree (University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Texas A & M, College Station and Oklahoma State University, Stillwater) * B.Sc. GPA: 4.59/5.0 * Master's GPA: 4/4 * GRE:311- V 154, Q 157 AWA 4. (written in 2018). Schools waived this due to COVID-19 restrictions and lack of confidence in this metric (depends on the program). * TOEFL: 105 (taken in 2018 and expired), but I have over a year of graduate school experience in the US. *1 publication- unrelated research, but a few more publications and abstracts on the way on related research topics. * 4 grants/scholarships from undergrad and grad schools. * Over 2 years experience as a GTA and GA (Nigeria and US). * 4 academic and international competition awards. * Good volunteering experiences. * Skilled in relevant software * Course-related virtual internship * Over 4 Massive Open Oline Course certifications from reputable schools (Not sure if this was helpful). ULL- applied in Nov, safe school, admitted in Dec, funding later in Spring. Had a professor interested in working with me. TAMU - applied in September/October, had an informal Zoom interview with 2 professors in October, got a follow up from the Director of one of their research centers about my research interests. I would most likely be admitted and funded. OSU - admitted, full and generous GRA/GTA offer (I believe this is an early decision). I have been in contact with a prolific potential supervisor for over 5 months, and hear this prof is a great mentor. I applied to only three schools because I had been in contact with the professors there who shared similar research interests. I didn't get good replies from the many professors I contacted from the other programs. NB: Because you haven't gotten a response from a prof. in a program doesn't mean you wouldn't be funded. Just felt I should post this as an encouragement to hopefuls. This process can be really stressful, especially during the long wait for decisions (Dec - April). But remain diligent, and I assure you that it is worth it. The system works here; your hardwork is duely rewarded, and opportunities are numerous despite being an international student (although it has its disadvantages too ). Package your application well by highlighting your strengths, take time to carefully review your statement of purpose, ensure your recommenders submit their assessments in time, etc. Also, don't be afraid to contact the program's coordinator if you have any questions (best time is during US work hours). N.B.: Most Decisions for funding are made between February 2021 until resumption, so don't feel out of place reading my post. Many Fall '21 apps are still ongoing. Also don't be intimidated by any profile you see online or anywhere. Do your due diligence and hope for the best. Don't underestimate the value of your SOP and recomendation letters. All glory to God. Thanks to all the invaluable advice here by generous individuals. Yes We Can Fall '21 25 Likes 1 Share |
