Kidnappings: Nigerian Army has failed Borno residents – Zulum The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has blamed the recent spike of abductions along the roads leading to his state on the Nigeria military, even as he stressed that the people are being killed because the army has failed to do their assigned jobs. Mr Zulum was reacting to last weekend’s abduction of 35 travellers and many other such incidences that have become a daily occurrence on Maiduguri-Damaturu road, the only safe route that leads to Borno State. The governor, on Monday, visited the location where the 35 travellers were abducted to inspect the level of destruction perpetrated by the Boko Haram. The governor spoke to journalists at the scene of the attack, expressing shock and annoyance on how such magnitude of attack was being perpetrated under the watch of the soldiers and police special squads deployed to protect the highway. “It is sad and mind-boggling how innocent commuters are being kidnapped and killed on this Maiduguri – Kano road, especially the road linking Maiduguri and Damaturu. It is also very annoying to note that these atrocities are being committed between Jakana and Auno, a distance of only 20 kilometres.” “Surprisingly we have a Brigade Commander with his team in Jakana; we also have a commanding officer with his battalion in Auno; both teams cover a distance of only 20 kilometres, and they have failed to protect the commuters. “The Nigeria Army has failed us; they have failed in discharging their role of protecting the commuters. “This morning while travelling from Maiduguri to Jakana up to Auno, I did not see or sight any single soldier. Even the police-led Rapid Response Squad (RRS) that we established and equipped and enabled to patrol this highway were nowhere to be found on the highway. Instead, they are busy harassing and collecting money from innocent travellers, both police and soldiers.” “This is embarrassing. Just look at the number of vehicles that have been burnt here, yet we have our soldiers there watching and collecting money from commuters. “The irony of the whole thing is that no one dares to speak the truth; if you do, they would soon be out to condemn you. “If the army cannot protect people travelling within a distance of only 20 kilometres, then I cannot foresee the capacity of the army ending this insurgency any time soon.” The governor said that despite the setbacks he would be convening an emergency security meeting as soon as he returned to the state capital. The distance between Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, and Maiduguri, is about 135 kilometres but the hotspot location for attacks and abduction is a 20km stretch on the road. Which means, coming from Damaturu, travellers are no longer safe from kilometre 91 up to 115th kilometre; and coming from Damaturu the road becomes dangerous from 25th kilometre up the 45th kilometre. In between this stretch, there are identifiable cattle routes that the insurgents use. Also, at both ends of the danger zones, there is a military deployment. Travellers who must use these routes are only safe to do so between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The insurgents usually take charge of the highway from around 2 p.m. till late in the evening. Most of the victims of the attack are late travellers, especially those coming to Maiduguri from long distances; or those who set out on journeys very early in the morning. Mr Zulum, since he assumed office last year, has been very vocal in his criticism of security agencies anytime he feels they are not performing. The Borno governor, who sometimes ignores security advice to visit troubled parts of Borno State, once accused soldiers of deliberately attacking his convoy to prevent him from reaching a troubled fishing community in the state. The army, however, said the attack was carried out by Boko Haram, the terror group that has been carrying out attacks in North-east Nigeria since 2009. The Boko Haram insurgency has caused over 40,000 deaths and displaced millions of others, mainly in North-east Nigeria. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/432452-kidnappings-nigerian-army-has-failed-borno-residents-zulum.html This governor nah one kin confuse man 2 Likes |

bidexiii: Blame the leaders of those countries that invited them to fight insurgency for them while they lazy around collecting grants and aids Even though our own government is clueless, I'll still commend them for not involving external forces or Mercenaries. No matter the promises they may make, it doesn't usually end well for the hosts, and they usually don't always want to leave in a hurry. They end up turning you country to military testing sites for their new weapons and training grounds for their latest military units and even steal your resources as well all in the name of fighting insurgency for you. The fact that Nigeria hasn't asked for help from the west and allowing them to set up shop like they do in other countries like Mali, CAR, Somalia etc is what is probably pissing of the USA and they always frustrate our efforts in getting weapons before Trump came into power. I'm not a fan of Buhari but cancelling the contracts of those mercenaries when he came him in 2015 was one decision I'll always applaud him for, no matter how it might look politically. 7 Likes 1 Share |

BabaOwen: Baba, in just few pages behind, some people have answered this question. The insurgency is still with us but the morale of the terrorists is at it's lowest owing to the combined efforts of the Nigerian Armed forces. Troop morale may not be the best yet but it is far better than the Jonathan era. |

iboboyswag:Lol... What do you mean by the morale of the terrorists is low? Do you have an insider for you to know this? The way things dey go for this country now, it might become a failed state. A country the NA will summon the president for him to come and explain why security is falling apart in almost every part of the country, the president didn't go or even come out to tell us why he cant appear before the house members. Benin city and Edo state is turning something else in terms of security. Herdsmen are causing havoc in the middle belt and south west, ESN in in the south east etc 3 Likes |

BabaOwen: One of the latest actors in town. I remember when people on here advised that this guy is just another clout chaser, unwilling and unable to tell the real truth to the face of the person that truly matters; I was like nahhh, no way. Zulum fooled everyone, he is a relatively new actor in the game, hence, as reasonable human beings, he was given the benefit of doubt. But its obvious, with every consecutive word that comes out of his mouth, he physically twists and discombobulates himself into a native styled gele and wrapper, that one wonders, how does this even make any sense. how does one begin to unbundle this stack of nonsense. Says one thing today, only to walk it back the next day, all without tackling the real issue, all without blaming BuBu. 2 Likes |

I have some vintage Newsmagazines and Papers. Here is an edition of African Concord, dated February 1987. The leading story is about Equatorial Guinea's hostile posturing against Nigeria. It was published that Equatorial Guinean soldiers shot and killed Ninety Five Nigerians and deported Thirty two thousand Nigerian immigrant. Apartheid South Africa also established military bases in Malabo for a potential incursion into Nigeria. Ibrahim Babangida, the former Head of State of Nigeria, would later initiate a rapprochement with that country, and a detente was subsequently reached. Today, with our parlous defence architecture, frightening state of insecurity, and faltering political leadership, can Nigeria withstand any external aggression? I reckon that we are fortunate to have relatively weak neighbours. If ambitious and bellicose countries like Gaddafi's era Libya, Sudan, Egypt etc are the ones that share border with us, we will be licking our wounds all over by now. 10 Likes

Bama: For being undefeated, Zulum offers Xmas largesse to soldiers of 151 battalion ... Directs construction of 200 homes in Gurusoye Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday, visited headquarters of 151 battalion at Banki junction in Bama, and he announced a Christmas package for each of the over 700 soldiers and their officers, for being undefeated by Boko Haram. Zulum on arrival, entered a closed door meeting with commander of the 21 special armored brigade, Brigadier General Waheed Shaibu and commanding officer of the 151 battalion, Major A.A Umar, after which the Governor addressed troops. “On the basis of fairness, I treat everyone or group on their own merit. While we have challenges in some areas, we have successes in others, and one of those areas is this 151 battalion because you have never been defeated by the Boko Haram since formation. This battalion has largely stabilized all the areas under your jurisdiction here in Bama. I am principally here to on behalf of Government and the people of Borno State, once again, register our appreciation as I have done here before and as often do to other battalions and their brigades across the State. All of you have been very gallant and patriotic. We acknowledge all your sacrifices and we also know that you all operate under difficult conditions in different operational locations. We came with our widows might. Food will come your way and I have given a message to your commanders which will reach each one of you. Nothing can compensate for your sacrifices. We are grateful and we pray that Allah continues to protect all of you here and all our troops and volunteers and sustain your strength to remain undefeated. May God grant us permanent peace in Borno and Nigeria in general. God bless you all” Zulum said. ... Directs construction of 200 homes in Gurusoye After leaving headquarters of the 151 battalion, Governor Zulum alongside commanding officers of the battalion, inspected Gurusoye, a village behind the battalion’s headquarters, where Boko Haram destroyed during their occupation. Zulum directed the construction of 200 new homes in the area for resettlement purposes and to create aesthetics that will attract productive population for social and economic restoration. 2 Likes |

That's where you are wrong, those North African countries arm up because some of them harbor ill will towards one another, in other words, none of them want to be left behind and get invaded. If they had been our neighbors, Nigeria would have organized her defenses and Military apparatus accordingly and we certainly won't be in this position (militarily speaking), we'd arm up a long time ago and try to match whatever advancement or procurements they made.
