What's Your Honest Opinion About The New Sultan Of Sokoto ? Ever since he was installed, he had made 2 major comments on Nigeria politics : 1. He rejected the new naira notes because the Arabic inscription was removed from it 2. He said INEC is not serious towards the conduct of the election.(as stated in http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=73062) Now the question is, what can u make of this new emir? And is he still relevant in the Nigeria politics? |

I hope your post is not meant to bring the Sultan into ridicule? by his position, he is more than qualified to speak on National issues. This forum should not be allowed to degenerate our revered fathers or bring division to bear on Nigeria unity and let me reiterate that i am Yoruba and a Christian. I maybe wrong about your intent, but this could be hijacked by others to cause trouble. Lets be prudent with our criticism when people that represent our heritage are concerned.P E A C E! |

It's too Sad many do not wait to paint black anything associated to the North. Unfortunately, we go about this exhibiting the same violence & backwardness we claim to Criticise. By Gods Grace, One Day the Black Man would come to know Nothing Equals Unity in our affairs. |

You are supposed to comment on the topic and not invove in a brawl. well, the sultan just said his mind, maybe he wants to attain more fame without serving for long. he wants to be seen as having contributed, but I tell you his comments will bring nothing but trouble, first to the north and if not controlled, may extend. Nigeria is not an arabic country so what came over him that made him thing arabic inscription is necessary. shhhhhhhhh, did you just say he was , |

Great people discuss of ideas, feeble minds disscuss of people. It is highly unfortunate that this laudable project is being hijacked by individuals who want to cause disharmony in this forum. As a cultured yoruba man,the position of Obas,Obis ,Emirs is highly exalted and sacred and should be brought to ridicule.Would anybody in his or her right senses insult,Alake,OOni,Ereduwa simply because they try to express their minds? Please, irrespective of your tribes, religious affliation, sexual orientation, let us join hands together for the progress of our fatherland rather than resulting to principles of calumny. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by Tornadoz(m): 7:48pm On Mar 18, 2007 |
I do revere our emirs, obas, chiefs etc, but I don't think they should be involved in politics, when they get involved in politics then we have the right to criticise them. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by Rottweiler(m): 8:21pm On Mar 18, 2007 |
His comments are sensible ones! A trend (arabic on the naira) was changed and he questioned it. What's bad about it? We all know that INEC is not prepared for the April elections. To my knowledge, the Sultan has been the only royal/traditional/religious leader to speak the truth openly. He is by far better than our hypocritical/corrupt/lilly-livered traditional leaders in the south that would rather keep quiet because of the contract they are benefitting from the government. I still remember the case of the South-west leader that said Abacha was making sense after watching the Aso Rock video on Diya. May the wrath of God come upon them and the family members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An Oba that is more of a contractor than a respected royal father. A nation that have few upright leaders is doomed! |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by nigeria1: 12:36am On Mar 19, 2007 |
Rottweiler , there is a limit we can take it , to insult a man and abuse all is not right, there are Yoruba obas who are good, now, I would love to say, let us be honest are we really prepared, ? we can all lie before the world but not to ourself, what ever we do, let us do it well, |

I still remember the case of the South-west leader that said Abacha was making sense after watching the Aso Rock video on Diya.Well?Didn't Diya plan a coup?Didn't the whole world see that he was a chicken at the Oputa Panel when the video was shown to the world?Boy make credible statements not bigoted myopic ones! |

Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by justin04(m): 2:34am On Mar 19, 2007 |
As a Sultan and a religious leader, i do not think the Emir should get involve in politics. When he starts doing that, then he would show partiality on who he wants as the new President. Obas, Emir etc should not get involve in that process. As it is, I think he is pro Atiku with his comments. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by akara(m): 7:55am On Mar 19, 2007 |
These people have lost track of why they are there as Obas or Sultans etc. They have in politics at all. The right thing to do would be to ignore their univited comments. Even the Queen minds what she says and does not give personal coments on issues. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by longest(m): 3:35pm On Mar 19, 2007 |
i ve always said it that there are 2 traditional leaders that their subjects find hard to correct publicly, the sultan of sokoto and the oba of benin.but it seems this sultan "leaks"too much, i even know a muslim who is beginning to complaina bout his utterances.i am using this medium to inform the sultan that he should restrict his shallow and uninterllectual comments to his illiterate subjects from the north.if he makes any crazy comments and he feels that he is "uncorrectable",he will be shocked that the Ganis and the Soyinkas will be the first to blast him and even yab him on the pages of newspapers.u know say wole soyinka no dey practise any conventional religion and Gani can even blast an angel if the angel is fucking up , not to talk of sultan if he doubts it,he should ask the ooni of ife.who in yoruba tradition is a god.educated southwesterners they blast am and nothing they happen the sultan deserves a public speaking diploma course from the "oba of benin" sultan:'you need decompression' |

Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by Rottweiler(m): 5:04pm On Mar 19, 2007 |
Who says the Oba of Benin doesn't make comments on issues that affects his people? A leader (religious/royal or traditional) that keeps mute when policies, that affect his people negatively, are being churned out is not better than a billboard! Why are they leaders? Just to occupy the positions? When do they talk? When a thief steal his subject's tuber of yam? Some people just use their dirty fingers to type whatever comes from their dirty minds! Say the truth when you should! I am a Yoruba guy and I will say it anywhere: Some of our traditional rulers are a big disgrace! Nkan tan ma je ko je kan gbon! (my interpretation: their selfish interests beclouds their sense of reasoning). Our religious leaders too fall within this group. The leadership of CAN for instance has disappointed me. I keep saying it, when the elders keep quiet because of government patronage, the nation is doomed! When traditional rulers are big time government contractors, what do we expect? dualisation of Ife-Ibadan road, |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by Afam(m): 6:43pm On Mar 19, 2007 |
And what is the truth if I may ask? That arabic inscriptions should have not been removed from the naira? That INEC should allow Atiku (someone already indicted by an administrative panel of inquiry) to run? Please tell us the truth so we can learn from you. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by shango(m): 7:40pm On Mar 19, 2007 |
why stop at Arabic notes? Hell we should have a mosque in every state. And instutute Sharia Law so we Nigerians stop living like Kufi Infidels. Maybe then the almighty Emir and Sultan will be appeased. The problem with Nigeria is that it shouldnt even be a country. Most people would laugh if you wanted to make India and Saudi Arabia one big country for example, or Turkey and China. There is a reason every Nation that works on this planet has a uniform culture, religion and majority tribe. I mean a Sultan making the freaking news and making political commentary? Are in in the 1500s? Na wa for Naija. |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by superman(m): 11:01pm On Mar 19, 2007 |
why do ppl always believe NIgeria shouldnt even be a country! country like india are as diverse just like ours! at one point i was like watchin india talk show on CNN and hear then now say we in this part of the world are like brasil of india. we workship and love cricket that bring the country India as one entity now question! what is wrong with nigerians as a ppl as u can see the problem isnt NIGERIA BUT NIGERIANS LIKE U THAT FAIL TO PICTURE JACK IN THEIR BLOCK HEAD LIKE THAT SULTAN! there u go!! |
Re: The New Sultan Of Sokoto by longest(m): 9:12pm On Mar 20, 2007 |
the oba of benin prefers to make a pro people statement or pro african statement to a pro islamic statement. rotweiler , i dont think u know who an oba should be. secondly i did not praise yoruba obas, infact i yabbed them, pls read carefully and understand b4 u make comments.i am a christian and i can yab CAN,pope, sultan, yar'adua.na muslims they mystify them leaders.and i dont think rotweiler is a reader.this was how malcolm X mystified elijah muhammed, the leader of the nation of islam in the US.when malcolm got to know muhammed's terrible attrocities and spoke out,he got killed.thereafter muhammed ali spoke and he got suspended, mr man we all know that 1999 and 2003elections were worse than what we might have now,did u ever hear maccido talk anyhow?because such people know that change might take time atimes and that some revolutions are slow this is one of the things that makes islam difficult in the US because they believe that every issue under the sun must be "confrontable and discussable" if u will put arabic on the naira instead of hausa, then i shoul be fighting that they must put hebrew on the naira instead of yoruba. and i tell u, i love that my yoruba language more than any other language in the world including arabic rotweiler, pls pick books and read |

I am really appaled by the content of the mails under this caption. It is a pity that 48 years after independence we as Nigerians still habor such desdain towards ourselves as potrayed by the contents of the exchanges i have read in this column. I have never in my existence read so much filth, moreso directed at the exalted positions of our leaders who no matter their short comings ought to be accorded some level of docrum. I find it awfully disappointing and a tragedy beyond description that i share my very existence and to a lesser extent my nationality with the likes of the contributors who expressed their shallow mindedness on the respected leaders of our time. I feel disappointed with the moderators of this page for even allowing this utter garbage get in the public domain. Underneath the sickening exchanges, i detect an element of poor parental training and guidance. Who in Africa does not know that it is not in our tradition even in the stone ages to cast aspersions on elders? I am a northern Muslim, i respect the Sultan in equal measure with the Oba, Ooni and Alaafin. I honour and adore other traditional rulers too. Like other Nigerians, they are entitled to their opinion and being human they also make mistakes. I doubt if the Sultan made the statement on the arabic texts on the Naira notes. Like any educated person, he knows that there is nothing Islamic about the texts. What was written was simply the denominations of the Naira amount in Hausa using arabic texts. By removing them from the currency, the Govt. merely succeded in adding to the confusion on millions of nigerians who somehow relied on those hausa arabic text to be able to know the amount. How come no one is making any noise about the motto of Nigerian Army which is clearly islamic and written in arabic texts, 'victory in the name of Allah?' Why did they not change it say 'victory in the name of Jesus?' The truth of the matter is that all those mudane things do not matter in any nation striving to grow. Does it mean that because the Govt. has refused to recognise the Islamic calendar i should stop going to work on Friday alongside other Muslims in the Arab countries? Should i turn down medical attention from the Red Cross just because they have a CROSS as their symbol? I personally believe in the Nigerian dream but to be honest anytime i read 'stone-age' comments like the ones expressed some of the writers, i pray to God to hasten the peaceful dissolution of this country so that we all can go our seperate ways with our dignity intact. God bless Nigeria, for now! |
