Why Do Countries Have Different Time Zones? by Agbeni33: 3:18pm On Dec 26, 2020 |
Hey guys, Can we throw more light on this topic. Why do countries all over the world have different time zone? For instance, the difference between Nigeria and UK time is just like 2 hours. Nigerian and Canada time is like 6 to 7 hours difference. So the question is what is the rationale behind this time perspective? 24 Likes 3 Shares

Agbeni33: There is no time difference between Nigeria and UK hour between the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October each year. That is called the British Summer Time . All other times of the year the UK time is one hour behind that of Nigeria. Why the time difference. Basically the earth is not flat, it is spherical and it rotates everyday on its axis, meaning that sunlight does not reach each place on earth the same time and in the same intensity. So when it is day in some places, at the same time in other places it is night. 486 Likes 32 Shares |

Op it's because of the rotation of the earth ,if the earth rotates you country away from the sun then it become evening or night ,the other part that faces the sun becomes day. Simple geography. 63 Likes 6 Shares |

bigpriik:Earth Rotation determines change in night/day across the globe as well as different seasons of the year... But Longitudes of the earth determine the time variation. Each 15 degrees longitude represents an hour change so if London is on Longitude 0 degrees and Tokyo is on Longitude 45 degrees - Tokyo will be 3hrs ahead of london 129 Likes 11 Shares |

This one is simple naa, the sun does not shine everywhere at the same time, so time is not the same everywhere. That's why we all are 15 minutes in a different time zone. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Agbeni33:i don hear. Many countries also adjust the time by one hour during winter. In summer it gets dark like 8 to 11.but winter by 4.30pm to 5 pm every where is already dark. Picture taken at 5.39 pm in Toronto 23 Likes 1 Share

Agbeni33: Earth rotates, different parts of Earth accept sunlight or darkness, giving us day and night. As your location on Earth rotates into sunlight, you see the sun rise. ... As this occur... It will make us have different time zones. 4 Likes |
Re: Why Do Countries Have Different Time Zones? by flokii: 7:40pm On Dec 26, 2020 |
It's simply due to their position and distance from the equator. As the earth rotates, different parts experience separate daytime and nighttime. I used to calculate time zones and local times back then in Geography class using latitude and longitudinal coefficients. Now google has made life so easy that you won't need to go through the stress of calculations. 10 Likes |

The Earth is a sphere that rotates around its axis while the sun is stagnant. Since the earth is a sphere, sunlight cannot reach every side at the same time, so which ever side faces the sun, that part automatically gets daylight (sunlight). Since the earth is spherical, it has 360 degrees. Divide 360 by 24(hours) it equals 15 degrees. If you chose a point latitude 0, longitude 0 you arrive at a point lets call it meridian. The countries that are on the line fall under GMT +0 Every country that is 15 degrees off the meridian becomes GMT +1, and so on until you get all 24 time zones. The GMT +1, +2 etc indicate how much time should be added to GMT +0 . 145 Likes 19 Shares |

Imagine the earth as a ball, put it on a stick. Tell your friend to point a torchlight (Sun) to one side of the ball, then rotate the ball, the part of the ball that receives the light from the torchlight is the day, while the other side of the ball where the torchlight is not affecting is the night. 68 Likes 2 Shares |

Obviously because earth is spherical rotating round the sun. Bigger question should be why rain will be falling heavily in next street and yours will be as dry as if rain never fell before. 27 Likes 3 Shares |

Okay, OP, let me teach you in primary school tone and voice. My instructional material is a flashlight (touch) and a spherical globe containing map of the world. For easier understanding, take the materials to a dark room where the only source of light is the touch light. Now, the touch represents the sun and should be kept on a chair at one corner of the room. The sun is the only source of light in the whole universe. The moon and stars merely reflect rays of light from the sun. The sun does not move at all. It is stationary and shines constantly without stopping. So, in this dark room, keep the touch light shining at one place towards the globe without offing it. Back to the globe, make it stand constantly on the south pole with Australia near it, while the North Pole is constantly upside with Siberia, Alaska and Northern Russia close to it. Now, set the globe in such a way that the light is shining directly on the map of Nigeria on the globe. In real world, that happens around 12pm in Nigeria. Other countries on the same line (latitude) with Nigeria, such as Italy, Libya, Tunisia, Niger, Germany, etc have their 12pm at the same time. So, it is said that they are on the same time zone. At this same time, countries and areas directly behind Nigeria on the other side of the globe will have their 12am (i.e. Mid night) because the light from the touch (sun) can not reach them. The earth rotates anti-clockwise on its axis (meaning that it turns round and round slowly on the South Pole side). So, we turn our globe so that the touch light now shines directly on the map of Ghana, Mali, UK, Spain, etc . In reality, it takes the earth complete 1 hour to make this turn. So, the time zone around the world would have changed by 1 hour. Time in Nigeria becomes 1pm when Ghana has 12pm, At this same time, Senegal would be having 11am. The earth and time continue to move until Nigeria will reach behind the light, which is night. At 12am (mid night) in Nigeria, some countries facing the sun will have their mid day. It takes 24 hours for the earth to rotate completely on its axis. That is what we call one day. Also, the earth revolves around the sun. That means it continues moving, apart From rotating, until it has gone round the sun. This takes 365 and one quarter days to complete. That is one year. I hope you all understand today's lesson. 82 Likes 10 Shares |

I think receiving sun light doesn’t make the time difference. Someone should explain how some area have 3months of daylight ie no night for months in say Canada. In my opinion day time and night time doesn’t affect the time zone. The question is why are there different times in different locations of the earth at the same instance? I am curious like the op 9 Likes |

with difference in the position of longitude we have different time zone. longitude extend to 360 degrees. every 15 degrees gives 1 hour. the number of longitude that cuts thru your country determines your time. Nigeria is on 15 degrees east thus 1 hour ahead of countries like Ghana and uk on 0 degrees. its been long but i should be right. 14 Likes |

This is good post as an Art student I still think about this few hours ago how the whole west Africa will have only a time zone and only a state in US will have two different time zone. I hopefully read this post to see some answers while I smoke my blunt 2 Likes |
