By Udora Orizu

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has expressed its support for the assertion by the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, on the state of the nation.

Kukah had in his 2020 Christmas Message said President Muhammadu Buhari was presiding over a country with prospects of a failed state.

He also said that there was no way any non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari had done by his nepotism and gotten away with it, adding that there would have been a military coup or war.

Reacting, the Federal Government had said it was graceless and impious for any religious leader to use the period of Christmas, which is a season of peace, to stoke the embers of hatred, sectarian strife and national disunity.

It also said calling for violent overthrow of democratically elected government was not what a religious leader should engage in.

But, the Southern and Middle belt Forum in a statement titled, ‘You cannot suppress the voice of reason’, and signed by its leaders, Yinka Odumakin (South West), Chief Guy Ikoku (South East), Senator Bassey Henshaw (South South) and Dr Isuwa Dogo (Middle Belt), condemned the reaction of the Federal Government.

The forum said Kukah had been a beacon of truthfulness over the years, and remains a foremost defender of the aspirations of millions of Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines, adding that the voice of truth and reason, can never be suppressed.

According to the statement, ”The leadership of the Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Forum, notes with very serious concern and condemnation the outbursts of the Presidency and the Northern Elders Forum over the Christmas Day Message of the revered Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah.

”The outspoken cleric who has been a beacon of truthfulness over the years, remains a foremost defender of the aspirations of millions of Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines. On this occasion, his comments have been applauded by majority of Nigerians and we all stand with him.

”We want to remind the Federal Government and its attack dogs that in the past, they had equally welcomed the forthright views of this Man of God even it favoured them. So why attack him now when he cautions them on their divisive policies? Today, the country has become terribly divided along all kinds of lines. It is shameful and indefensible that suddenly, the Federal Government is dominated by one small ethnic group and they expect all to keep quiet like slaves. Also the wind of insecurity is now almost tsunami and even up to Mr. President’s doorstep in Katsina when he was home recently on holiday.

”What we expected was for those concerned to retrace their very unhelpful steps and get back to rekindling oneness in the country. We once more can call on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to restructure the country. Finally, we remind those concerned that the voice of truth and reason, can never be suppressed successfully. Bishop Kukah remains a national icon, a hero of the masses. We therefore demand immediate apology to him for the baseless attacks.”

First of all there's nothing like middle belt!

Christian Benue don't represent the whole of North Central.

Nasarawa is 70% Islam with a Muslim governor with an Emir

Niger is 80% muslims with a Muslim governor with an Emir.

Kogi is 60% muslim with a Muslim governor.

Kwara is 60% muslim with a Muslim governor.

The only full Christian state in the north central is Benue state!

Benue is the only Christian state you can carry along with your religious bigotry.

Even the Hausafulani Christians have rejected kuka!!

Kuka can only be supported by Igbos and religious bigots from the south.

Like Nero that sang while Rome burnt, Buhari is busy playing tribalism and nepotism while the last vestiges that hold the Nigerian state together totally erode.

I totally cannot see any way Nigeria will avoid a bloody civil war from which it would finally disintegrate. Buhari took it too far and too extreme. Even Abubakar Shekau would have been more patriotic to Nigeria.

Buhari should face his friend Mbaka and let my bishop be. The Catholic world is watching with all keeness. Any attempt to kidnap , kill or arrest the Hausa catholic bishop might eventually lead to disintegration or a great civil unrest that will make end Sars look like child's play. Lalasticlala

If truly they hate him then they've been justified by the current state of affairs. You can make him a live president in Arewa Republic.
It beats my imagination how some people with be shortchanging and killing others and the same time expect those people not to complain.

That's not true.

Buhari won in 2015 because he won the following Middle Belt states...Kwara, Kogi , Adamawa, Nassarawa and Benue...and got over 25% of the vote in several states like Taraba.

He repeated the same in 2019, with the only state he lost being Benue.

Buhari has always gotten votes in the Middle Belt, even during his CPC era.....

Good one from this forum. We will not.all fold our arms and allow this divisive and tribal bigot ruin Nigeria and Nigerians.

Just look at the level of insecurity all over the country and he has refused to change his bunch of fellow incompetent service chiefs simply because they are his kinsmen.

I have always wondered why our religious leaders are not using their platforms to make the government feel the heat of what it is dishing out to it's citizens.

Kudos to Father Kukah for this bold and raw truth to the authorities.

I appeal to other religious leaders to use their platforms and consistently remind this incompetent government that he was elected by the people.

If This administration dey smoke Oshogno weed, let them touch Father Kukah.

The Crux of the matter is that the security structure of the country is in shambles. And if one is pointing this out without libelling, I see no reason such a stand should be considered as divisive.
I pray 2021 will be safer. But prayer can only work when a man works toward the intent. We are the gods we pray to. Think on it.

To the Muslim- north, Koran is superior to constitution and humanity. The Koran reduced Egypt, Babylon and Persia to nonentities. These nations are struggling to catch up with the rest of progressive world. The north is bringing bleek darkness upon Nigeria, Buhari, El - Rufai are vanguards of doom.
The south and middle belt must work together to break this yoke.
