Here's the thing though, those foreigners and pan Africans have a rose tinted view of Africa due to not having any solid culture to associate themselves with.

One of the poorest countries in the world is Haiti... (why is another story). If you believe Nigeria is sooo hard... try Haiti. Regardless of what the world says or believe.... a Hatian will proudly tell you he is Hatian... and he will hold on to his culture wherever he is. The ones who practice voodoo will not hesitate to let you know.... they are proud and maintain their culture. I could provide more indept answer but I’ve not the patience and majority wouldn’t want to read through it. The barebones answer is that individuals are inclined to appreciate art. It is in the context of art that contemporary westerners view these Nigeria tribe cultural pieces -for the most part. Contemporary Nigerians enjoy art as much as anyone. Majority of Nigerians enjoy and appreciate art. Indeed Nigerians are possibly the greatest artist in Africa. The difficulty arises since these tribal Nigerian pieces were not created as art by their originators and contemporary Nigerians do not view them as pieces of Art. From this, you may deduce that each work is tribe specific and relates to cultural beliefs and practices of the relevant tribe. For example, where a white or western audience may view as fantastic the great wooden phallus created originally by the primordial Isoko society for the purpose of insulting arrant gods, to an Igbo the same phallus may represent an unworn threat. The igbo, Isoko, Yorba, Ijaw and other tribal societies that make up Nigeria are liable to view each other's tribal works with suspicions since works such as these are recognised by each as representative of unkown cultural practices.
