A lot of people didn't get this answer right. Sad. I know the exact reason. It's as a result of colonial conditioning. They lied to us that all these items are filled with evil spirits, demons and Satan during the colonial error and we not willing to think for ourselves believed the evangelists hook line and sinker and then they looted this items and are using them to make trillions of pounds in European museums. The easiest way to get something cheaply is to devalue it.

It's the same reason most Nigerians will obey their Daddy G. O without question and thinking for themselves.

blaming the white wen our black leaders are useless is absolutely absurd. We are in 21st century and we
can't blame the past always. British were very brutal with the Americans and Scottish yet they are very developed with a right thinking attitude.

You mention the Scots and Irish but they are all autonomous entities, having their flags, currencies and even independent court of sessions for justice delivery.

If you read my writeup well, you'll see its only part-blame that goes to the Brits. The remaining part-blame falls on us because with enlightenment and education that we have today, we have a significant portion of people who can't still put 2 and 2 together.

They are still not aware of who they are and their history, and interpreting the role of their oppressors by and large. This is why I said the inability to properly reason is the greatest impediment and while sensitisation is one of the corrective doses, I fear its efficacy will be minimal because fatuity, amongst blacks (esp. African blacks), grows in leaps and bounds.

The first week of this year has produced stories with diverse themes , hopeful and thought-provoking news contents and revealing current affairs nuggets.

Few of these captivating pieces of information have made it to the front page of Africa's largest Internet forum, Nairaland. One of the trending media content that got to the front page was that of a cultural masquerade who relieved himself of his traditional duty after a convincing sermon by a young christian lady.

From twitter retweets by conservatives to Facebook timelines of Pan-Africans and even in the Nairaland thread provided immediately after this paragraph, there has been a battle of wits between citizens who believe the Nigerian culture of masquerading has outlived its importance and those who find pride in the ways of their ancestors who came before them.

https://www.nairaland.com/6344670/lady-converts-masquerader-christianity-makes

The purpose of this thread is anything but an argument. This thread simply reveals, with concrete evidence, what multinationals and foreigners think about our masquerades and masks.
Have you ever wondered why a rich successful man with educated and beautiful woman as a wife, yet goes after his housemaid? Or even a woman married to a rich husband, yet goes after her driver or gardener? We, naturally, go after things that are missing in our lives.

Here's the thing though, those foreigners and pan Africans have a rose tinted view of Africa due to not having any solid culture to associate themselves with.

They latch on to anything African in an attempt for forge an identity which is only related to them by the shade of brown they are born with.

I personally find Pan-Africans irritating.

Another view is that colonisation and Christianity/Islam has turned the artefacts into sinful idols lacking in purpose aside from leading men astray into the sinful "old ways of our ancestors".

Good points.

Can Ogundayo in Ibeju who poured palm oil and sacrificed goats or humans to Ogun see it in same light as Frank who sees Ogun idol in a museum? undecided

I am not a fourth class citizen!!!!!!
Furthermore, I don't gain anything from masquerades so I don't think they should exist!!!!
Why should I also believe that any religion is my essence
Why should I do what my ancestors did when it doesn't make sense??
Why do you think anyone that doesn't practise baseless traditions is misinformed
Do you think I give a damn about the lifestyles of the white people
All blacks are not the same!!!!!
All blacks don't have the same reasoning!!!!!!!!

One of the poorest countries in the world is Haiti... (why is another story). If you believe Nigeria is sooo hard... try Haiti. Regardless of what the world says or believe.... a Hatian will proudly tell you he is Hatian... and he will hold on to his culture wherever he is. The ones who practice voodoo will not hesitate to let you know.... they are proud and maintain their culture. Jamaicans another example... they hardly ever compromise....they will speak their "pidgin" and you are expected to understand or ask for interpretation.... while we will form half baked accents. If we are not proud of ourselves as individuals... how can we be proud of our culture.... let alone artifacts? What have we done with our historical slave trade sites?.... what have the Ghanians done with theirs?
Masquerade we want to erase from our culture.... but let's promote and embrace Halloween. Why?...... INFERIORITY COMPLEX.

Why Do Foreigners Appreciate Nigerian Masquerades, Artifact More Than Nigerians?

I could provide more indept answer but I’ve not the patience and majority wouldn’t want to read through it. The barebones answer is that individuals are inclined to appreciate art. It is in the context of art that contemporary westerners view these Nigeria tribe cultural pieces -for the most part. Contemporary Nigerians enjoy art as much as anyone. Majority of Nigerians enjoy and appreciate art. Indeed Nigerians are possibly the greatest artist in Africa. The difficulty arises since these tribal Nigerian pieces were not created as art by their originators and contemporary Nigerians do not view them as pieces of Art. From this, you may deduce that each work is tribe specific and relates to cultural beliefs and practices of the relevant tribe. For example, where a white or western audience may view as fantastic the great wooden phallus created originally by the primordial Isoko society for the purpose of insulting arrant gods, to an Igbo the same phallus may represent an unworn threat. The igbo, Isoko, Yorba, Ijaw and other tribal societies that make up Nigeria are liable to view each other's tribal works with suspicions since works such as these are recognised by each as representative of unkown cultural practices.

You have not told us why. You only gave us one-sided spatial constituent. There must be more to it.

mansakhalifa:
You want to know why?

It is simply because Nigeria is home to some of the most inferior Africans that you will ever find anywhere on this bloody Earth.
Like my father would always say: they want to be more 'white' than the 'white man' himself.

We were thoroughly colonized. Why do a lot of Nigerians try to speak with a "foreign accent" for instance?

Nigerians are messed up like that.

My opinion.
