Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN),  on Tuesday said he was not consulted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on the latest increase in electricity  tariff.


The Minister who spoke while featuring as a guest on Channels Television said the new increase was not agreed upon during their meeting .


" What NERC has released now is not reflective of what we discussed at the committee level. We are trying to fix a meeting for Thursday to find out exactly what happened and to take it from there. What we did at the Committee level was not to increase the tariff" he said.


NERC had  instructed DisCos to increase tariffs, effective January 1, 2021.


The order was signed by the new NERC Chairman, Sanusi Garba and one of its Commissioners Dafe Akpeneye.


The increase in tariffs follows a suspension of an earlier order issued in August increasing tariffs starting September 1, 2020. However, a threat by Labour to go on a nationwide strike forced the government to suspend the tariffs for two weeks ending October 15th, 2020.
