Over the past few years, drone technology has become commonplace worldwide, with Nigeria being no exception. No marriage party would be complete in Nigeria, without the attendance of a photographer who also uses a drone to capture aerial views of the good times being had by all. With battery life being the only limitation to the duration of any given drone flight, drone manufacturers are constantly increasing the battery power of their aircraft, with flight times of between 26 minutes and 40 minutes being the average duration possible at present for consumer level drones. Meanwhile, the resolution of drone video cameras, is improving by leaps and bounds, with at least one DJI drone offering digital 4-power zoom capabilities for their drone cameras, enabling pilots to film from afar, while recording videos of astoundingly high resolution. Check out some images captured by my bird, one of which shows an encounter with the Area Fada of the skies, otherwise known as the Aerial Fada - namely a hawk, some of which have been known to attack and destroy drones, just because they can ha ha. Anyway, after many hours of rigorous flight training with my desktop computer's drone flight simulator made by RealFlight, I am up to the task of taking evasive action so as to survive any attack by the Talons of Death. At present, my flight logs show one of my drones having covered a total of over 400 miles, over more than 20 hours of flight in total. So, fellow Drone Meisters in da house, let us hear about your gear. What type of drone do you fly ? Where do you fly ? Do you have some photos or video clips to display your piloting expertise ? If you do, then hey, show them here, now, with immediate effect. 3 Likes

neonly: Hey, post up some details, and you might run into some buyers who visited this thread. It will be a good while before I next buy a drone, but when I do, it will likely be the DJI Mini 2, which boasts of a whopping 31 minutes of flight battery life, zoom lens video capability, and some serious wind-fighting prowess, unlike the earlier Mini version, which did not handle the wind well at all. https://www.dji.com/mini-2?site=brandsite&from=nav Best part about the Mini 2 is that it is very small, and tips the scales at 249 grams, meaning that in the USA and EU, the Mini 2 does not need to be registered with the FAA or CAA. Finally, I have seen brand new Mini 2s for sale at a little over $400, or 160K naira, which is a reasonable price, considering the money-making potential of such a small drone. 4 Likes |

To comply with FAA rules, most drones sold for the USA and EU market, are hard-wired to remain below 400 feet altitude at all times, however, there are a few Chinese drone makers who couldn't care in the slightest about anybody's rules, and thus market drones that can reach 4,500 feet above ground level, with a few models that can be hacked to reach even greater heights. This picture was taken by my trusty drone on a particularly clear day, from a height of 700 feet. 1 Like

Yes the world is changing very rapidly. Many countries are adopting new technologies in many fields. As long as drones are concerned they are playing vital role in the modern era. They are being used in photography, security and agriculture for spraying. Now there are many companies like DJI, Parrot, Yuneec and many more. I think the most leading among them is DJI, recently I was viewing the specs of its Agras T16. [You can also check to understand the things [url]https://talosdrones.com/product/dji-agras-t16-sprayer-ag-drone/[url] After that I realized that how even farmers are adopting the drone technology. 2 Likes |

chamberjohnson: Thanks for stopping by, Chamber Johnson. Yes indeed, with drones spraying farms with agro-chemicals with great efficiency and precision, the use of manned aircraft for that task, is no longer necessary. Drones are also used to perform analysis of farmland water availability, and crop health, among many other agricultural applications now coming on stream. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn7Q4oIrP3I |

Oga Jakumo. I love drones and all aspects of flying. If reincarnation is real, it is my wish to be reincarnated as a bird, maybe a swallow Swallows are actually incredible flyers. I have seen them flying inches from the ground. Yeah, mere inches. Anyway, I hope to get a Mavic Mini 2 this year. Was thinking about saving up and getting a Nikon D5600 DSLR, but I am thinking the Mavic is better. Maybe I can get one cheap on Offerup now that Trump has essentially banned DJI products in the US 2 Likes |

GabrielYulaw: The Mavic 2 would be an excellent choice, Gabriel, and certainly will provide more hours of fun than any hand held camera one could purchase. I must mention, however, that if you want the capability to pre-plan your drone's flight routes on your desktop computer, so as to send the drone out on fully automatic missions that require no pilot input other than takeoff and landing, I strongly suggest that you buy a less expensive used Mavic Pro instead of the new Mavic 2. With the Litchi Mission Hub, a completely free download for your desktop computer, you can plan flights for a Mavic Pro, or any of the Phantom series. My old Phantom 3 Standard routinely covers 6 miles on a typical round trip under automated control, filming in 2.7K all the way, for a total of about 4GB on the SD memory card, per flight. I generally fly the Phantom at 150 feet above ground, and it lands with 25% to 30% battery. With a Mavic Pro, you would get much higher resolution 4K videos, and longer flight times of 27 minutes per fully charged battery, which is considerably better than the 25 minute flight duration of the Phantom 3 Standard. Also the Mavic Pro is foldable, and much less obvious once folded up in a bag. The Mavic 2 is a fine instrument, with superb signal reach, but as of now, Litchi waypoint planning is NOT available for the Mavic 2. 3 Likes

GabrielYulaw: Almost forgot to mention that while the Litchi Mission Hub download for your desktop is free, the Litchi app for your mobile device, that is used during the drone's actual flight, is a $25 download, which translates to 12.5k naira, available at the Google App store, or the Apple store, depending on whether you own an Android or Apple device, respectively. In summary, the flight is planned indoors on your desktop, and then saved, such that when you fire up the drone for a flight, you retrieve that saved flight that is automatically "linked", or copied, to your mobile device. Then, with the drone lifted off into the air, you simply touch the "play" icon on your device's Litchi screen, and off she goes, for as long as 6 miles round trip, during which you as the pilot, can relax indoors until the elapsed flight time is nearly up, when you can then step out for a manual landing as the drone returns home. Each planned flight shows the expected duration of the flight in minutes, even before you lift off, so you know with certainty, when the drone will arrive back home. 1 Like |

The difference between men and boys, as the old saying goes, is the price of their toys. With that in mind, there is no question that the US military is the biggest boy on the block, with very deep pockets to buy the most expensive toys currently available. This news item emerged today, describing how Travis Air Force Base in California, has now added drone patrols to its already formidable perimeter fencing protocol. With the growing feud between the USA and China, the US military obviously would not be inclined to purchase Chinese technology, to guard sensitive military installations, so, Uncle Sam went with the 100% USA-made Easy Aerial drone, which is so pricey that the cost is not even quoted in the website. This drone is cutting edge technology exemplified, as it deploys automatically from a parked vehicle, in response to any breach of perimeter automated alarm that is received, without any human involvement at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3pAYs7CKEI&feature=emb_title https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngSTHzchXFE In the same Air Force base, ROBOTIC dogs, most likely weaponized with firearms, accompany human patrols, so a to address and pacify any threats that the drone locates within the protected perimeter area of the base. This is current state of the art, which will only evolve to become yet more versatile and deadly, in the coming months and years. 2 Likes |

Jakumo: Very nice. But it is not that big a drone. I don't think there would be much difficulty in a sniper shooting it from the air with a .50cal. If I was in charge of the base I would use money spent on the drones to cover every inch of the base with HD cameras and have an AI watch the feed and point me to points of interest. Using small drones like these to guard a base doesn't make much sense cos it would be easy to down them or interfere with their operations. The same with the dog armed with a rifle. 1 Like |

GabrielYulaw: Good point about shooting drones down, but with a zoom camera standard on such military drones, the craft can fly high enough where the motor is not even audible on the ground, and the bird itself a mere speck in the sky. DJI's consumer level drones now offer 4-power digital camera zoom, so one would expect military drones to feature zoom powers of 10 or more, whereby the craft can cruise at 700 feet AGL, while taking crystal clear video footage with resolution sharp enough to make facial recognition possible. 1 Like |
Re: Let Us Talk About Drones by GabrielYulaw(m): 2:33am On Jan 08, 2021 |
Jakumo: Ahhh... I didn't think of that. But remember that the point of such drones is to deter an attack and provide forewarning. But I don't see irate farmers attacking military bases. Instead, it will be highly trained personnel. They are likely to have thermal imagers and the like to let them spot drones like these and neutralize them. I'm not saying drones are useless, but the one I'm seeing is just too small, doesn't fly high enough, carries too small a payload and doesn't have enough endurance. In my opinion they don't present much of a threat to a serious attacker. |
Re: Let Us Talk About Drones by Jakumo(m): 7:14am On Jan 08, 2021 |
GabrielYulaw: Don't forget that this is purely a surveillance drone, a flying camera for early warning, whose alert will then trigger the deployment of heavy metal on the ground, or from the skies. That eye in the sky is vital, just as armed drones also have their role for long range selective target destruction, which is handled by much larger fixed-wing drones like the Predator and the Reaper. 1 Like
