Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, said on Friday that seven SIM cards can be linked to one National Identification Number on the National Identity Management Commission Mobile App launched recently.

The minister said the ministry and NIMC are working on transforming the NIN enrolment process and the onward linkage to SIM cards as required by the Nigerian Communication Commission.

“We developed an app, when you go online, you will see it. That app, as long as you have your NIMC number, you will only download it without visiting any office. You will be able to link up to seven SIM numbers to only one. I have already downloaded the app, launched the app, and already linked some of my numbers immediately. This is part of digitalisation,” he said.

Pantami spoke while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme monitored by The PUNCH.

He also said the ministry, NIMC and telecommunication operators would review the entire NIN linkage to SIM cards by network users should the Federal Government impose a fresh lockdown amid the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Federal Government had said telcos subscribers with NIN have January 19 as deadline to link their NIN with their SIM cards while subscribers without NIN have until February 9 to do so.

As of October 2020, the total number of mobile network connections was 207.58 million, but currently, only 43 million Nigerians have NIN, thus 164 million telephone users are at the risk of being deactivated.

Each staff should link the Sim to his/her NIN. If the Sims were registered embloc by the company, individual staff will perhaps re-register the Sim in their own names before linking with NIN..

Some people buy new sims every 3 months to enjoy the free double data bonus offered by networks not because they want to use it for anything wrong.

Just take a look at how they exposed citizens to covid 19 by making them go register in one month. A country that has not been able to issue plastic ID cards to any of her citizens put them in danger and gave them an ultimatum. I've never seen such great wickedness and we are so Used to it.

A friend of mine who’s an engineer went up north for a building work and was returning with this Toyota hiace bus along with 2 of his workers and he told me that while passing somewhere in Adamawa state their bus was stopped by immigration officers who demanded they all come down and show their ID’s.

He couldn’t hold his surprise when he noticed that out of the 18 passengers on board it was just him and his two colleagues who had valid sources of identification. The rest were apparent northerners who couldn’t even speak English and didn’t even have phones talk more of ID cards.

After bribing the immigration guys they were all told to enter the bus and continue their journey to the south.

Now let’s do some maths :

One hummer bus passed with 15 apparent immigrants. If 100 passes in a day that’s 1,500 immigrants. (Just for hiace only oh)

What of Sienna? Commuter? Private? Etc all carrying their own various amounts of immigrants?

I project at least 10,000 immigrants coming soy that per day from one particular route from the north in Nigeria today. And this is very worrying.
I hope this NIN and SIM palava isn’t a ploy to grant them automatic citizenship via one mago-mago way or another

A phone line costs virtually nothing in Nigeria. If the line is registered in the staff name, it belongs to the staff - when leaving the company at best s/he will refund the N200 ( about US 50 cents).

It is a national policy that every phone line must be attached to a NIN. If the company doesnt have the resources to register a line for its new staff, the alternative as far as I can see is to register multiple lines with the NIN of some existing staff. That way the company will have excess lines to be giving to new staff, but this has its risks. If a crime is committed using a phone line, the person whose NIN is attached to the line will have alot of explaining to do.

So the company should keep changing their official lines and rebranding just because of inconsequential NIN?
