The high successes recorded by dubious politicians, fraudulent pastors and ponzi scheme operators in Nigeria are living proofs that Nigerians can be so gullible. We can easily be deceived. The astronomical hype on Canada is the latest deceit in town. Here are things you need to know before immigrating.

1. The list of richest Nigerians is filled with Nigerians living at home. You're more likely to make it into Forbes if you live in Nigeria. At least that's what the stat shows, whether people making into Forbes in Nigeria are engaging in corrupt practices is a story for another day. The odds of becoming a dollar billionaire favours those at home . No Diaspora Nigerian has ever made it into Forbes billionaire list.

2. There are more money to be made in a developing economy than in a developed economy. That's why as you're rushing out of the country, Lebanese, Indians and Chinese are rushing in. Only few will understand. You're sitting on the biggest market in Africa yet you haven't realize this but the Lebanese and the Indians knew this.

3. If you are the type who don't fancy working for others, it's much more easier to own a business in Nigeria than in Canada/US. Western countries were set up for the 99% populace to work for 1% elites. Their education systems were designed to produce workforce for the rat race. Not to create employers of labour.

4. It's stupidity to resign from a high-paying job in Nigeria in a bid to relocate to Canada/US. Your eyes will get clear up when you start facing the hard realities in Canada. Those who had made this mistake in the past are ashamed to come on social media to talk about it. The ones talking on Twitter are 'freshers' who just arrived.

5. If you want to secure 2nd passport for your kids, you don't necessarily need to immigrate to achieve this. There are other ways, one method is overseas child birth.

6. You're 5x more likely to be shot and rubbed in New York than in Lagos. Poor neighborhoods all over the world has more crime rates. The thing is, when you finally made it in Nigeria, you can move to high brow areas with lesser crime.

7. Nigerians are spending up to 8millions ($21k) and above to immigrate to Canada/US whereas an average canadian or American citizen can't boast of $10k in their bank A/C's. They live pay check to pay check.

8. Some Nigerians claims that they ain't relocating because of the money but because of good infrastructure, good health care system, value for their money etc. That's a lie! 98% of Nigerians who're eager to travel out are relocating because of economic reasons. There are good infrastructure, good health care system and value for money in countries like Kuwait, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Chile etc but Nigerians ain't trooping there, indicating that their preference for Canada/US is purely based on economic reasons.

9. It's cheaper to live in Nigeria. Canada/US promises higher minimum wage but the system will still take it away from you. It's like giving you with one hand and taking from you with another. $2k (N760k) will pay for your one year rent of 2 bedrooms apartment in a good location in Nigeria but same amount will only fetch you one month rent of a match box apartment in Canada/US.

10. This is not to stop you from traveling out but to inform you on the true realities. Economic immigration should be left for lower or working class who're struggling or to young lads who wants to school abroad and thereafter further their career overseas. Not to deceive Nigerians already earning good in corporate offices in Nigeria to resign and relocate where they will be employed as security guards or to deceive business owners who's businesses are thriving in Nigeria to close down business and relocate. Don't let them deceive you with the hype. Money don't grow on trees anywhere in the world.

You're not thinking straight at all. Your logic needs a lot of work.

See foolish and baseless post!
Why not compare $21k rent with 21k naira? As far as u are not using naira to pay rent in Canada dn't compare a dollar with what can its equivalent do in Nigeria. If u say i can eat with 500 in Nigeria then think of what $500 cannn do, not what $1 can do. Is 500naira suppose to b $1 ? 1naira is suppose to b $1.thats achievement
Your post is actually more foolish and baseless.
You guys don't understand the most basic economics.

Such a selfish post @op.. kudos to everyone on FP who put him in his place.

The reasons for staying in Nigeria never exceeds "money" .. money that majority of the citizens will never smell in their lifetime!
Not everyone wants to make it on "Forbes list" abeg.. most just want a safe, comfortable life in a system that works.

I really use to think like you until after the #EndSARS protest seeing a whole Nigerian Army colonel lie under oath about the #LekkiMassacre... and yes! You are right about some of your points about making money in Nigeria.

I made my first million in my early twenties doing business in Nigeria but, I would rather choose to live in a sane country where system works and hard work is valued than live in Nigeria for the sake of my future generation.

If you believe the likes of Dangote and Otedola live in Nigeria, you are wrong... They have businesses in Africa but spend most of their time outside Nigeria.

You need to travel out of Nigeria once to understand...

I have promised myself, my future generation will surely not be Nigerians. Thanks Op
sure bro I stand with you

What you mean is that citizens should be paying separate tax for politicians to steal and separate tax for basic amenities. grin

Nope, what i mean is exactly in line with what the op wrote.

Any literate person should understand that migration from sub Saharan Africa is purely based on economics.

Whether it was caused by the government, bad economy, bad infrastructure is an entirely seperate topic.

The desperation is based on economics, the welfare argument is false because welfare isn't free, it costs tax payers.

I'm traveling abroad because it's better angry, always remember people contributed economically to make it happen, so people trooping in are economic migrants attaching themselves to an established system.

Achieve quietly and let others go to Canada, USA, Europe etc.

What i will add is that travelling abroad and living abroad are two different things. When u travel u only see the things the want u to see, the beauty, infrastructure etc. But when u are living there, the nightmare will dawn on u. That said, everyone can make up their mind as to what they wish. I cant say people should use my experience not to emigrate. I can only tell u what i know, living in naija is far better!

Lol, how many Nigerians can go to Canada or Western countries? Remember we're a country of 150million people. It's not only Nigerians that are migrating, Ghanaians, Indians, Chinese etc are also migrating.
A time would come when these Westerners would shut their borders, after they get tired of using immigrants or when they feel immigrants are becoming a threat.

We have no other country but Nigeria, it's high time we start trying to fix our home rather than running away, cause nobody would do it for us.

Also, the post isn't rubbish, the OP made some serious facts.

pansophist:
Rubbish post.

My advice for anyone to travel, secure citizenship or permanent residence, then come to naija if you have to. Then you have both home and away advantage, and can launch into the world if you have to, its about having options and connected to the global economy.

When you have made so much money, you'll realise that your money can't secure you in a place like Nigeria, and you'll live with fear of your life everyday. You'll be surrounded by people who are envious of you, and wants to see you fall, and with not good security in place, they may succeed. Nigeria is a place where your life can be "off" in moments, thanks to the system that do not give a shit about you. No matter how much you earn, the system is designed to keep you poor.

I have friends paying/wasting millions of naira annually for school fees, health care, security and much more for their family, money they won't waste if they live in a country that automatically solves it. Its about knowing what you want in life, and pursue it. The western world might have its challenges but its still far better to be poor there, than in Nigeria.

Leave that thjng. I know close to 20peopke who have moved to Canada and they are all working in good places such as banks, insurance companies, IT firms etc. It depends on your quality. These are people who previously worked for Zenith, GTB, Shell, Mobil, KPMG, Deloite, Unilever etc in Nigeria, with solid experiences.

If you go to Canada with degree, but with no pedigree from here, well maybe you may find it more difficult. Same reason why poor quality graduates are almost unemployable here.

My annoyance is that all the people that writes about migrating to Canada are actually resident there, holed up in Brampton or Calgary and be discouraging people from embarking on the same journey.

It is already a well known fact that Nigerians abroad hates fellow Nigerians trying to make the same immigration journey. I don't know why. Please leave people to make their decision.

I don't think it's hate per say, although I do think a lot of people abroad experience the blues once in a while especially if they lead a lonely life abroad.. it's easy to forget what drove them away from Nigeria in the first place.. so they may discourage others out of sentiments..
..my own story is different, I've lived abroad through childhood and now in my late twenties and I'll always advocate for young people to move abroad..

The truth is that, you will find that majority of those who discourage others are actually based in Nigeria and cannot leave for one reason or the other.. (visa rejections, those who failed abroad and moved back.. those who were never happy both abroad and now in Nigeria..) bottom line is, misery loves company..

One of the most annoying thing about Nigeria is that ones money keeps losing value at an exponential rate. Imagine working for five years to gather #10 million only to realize after five years that the money is now worth half its price. A poor citizen who needed $15,000 to migrate abroad would need to save #2,550,000. After spending five years to gather the money, he then realize that he would need #5,250,000 for the same $15,000. What changed? Inflation! A mismanaged economy.

One of the main reasons why people migrate to developed countries is for better quality of life. The quality and availability of health care is these western countries cannot be compared with Nigeria. One chronic illness in Nigeria e.g. cancer, kidney failure is enough to wipe out your savings in a very short time due to non-availability of good health insurance.

Yes, it may be easier to make money in a developing economy but other factors must be considered such as a better future for your children and their children.

The first post has said it all, THE MOST STUPID POST OF THE YEAR. That's what this post is.
I really do not know where to start but I guess he couldn't get the opportunity to travel to Canada that's why he's pouring his anger here.
Keep trying until you get it and stop deceiving people by comparing Nigeria with Canada and US.
You said one can easily be short in the street of New York than that of Lagos. Really, it's obvious that you do not know Lagos very well and you have not been to New York too.
Let me just hold my peace.
My advice:
Stop deceiving people ok.
