softguy1:Yes, they are applicable. This is how it is; Merit is where they select the highest applicants irrespective of state till they get the required number and cutoff others. Then catchment area of a State University is all the LGAs of that state. ELDLGAs are LGAs that their people are not really into school. Example:Lagos State University. Her Merit will be selected from highest applicants whether the person is from ondo, Lagos,Enugu, Rivers, Kogi, Kaduna. Then cut off others. Catchment area will be all the LGAs in Lagos State. So if you are not a lagosian, you have no hope here. ELDLGAs are LGAs that are not really into schooling. Still if you are not a lagosian, you have no hope here. From 2nd batch, it becomes connection, begging, money and other runs irrespective of state of origin. State universities are built for the indigenes of a State while Federal is for everyone. ©️2021. |

Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by SESARS: 8:34am On Jan 16, 2021 |
samuelpeters:I want to ask a simple question using ABU as an example. If after putme and 10 students from Oyo state scored 80% aggregate, will ABU admit all 10 based on merit assuming their score is within let's say top 20? If not, then their definition of merit as proposed by jamb or whoever is flawed. I don't blame Northern universities rather I blame the Southern ones for leaving their merit to everyone. The North knows that by picking top 3 in each state, they already have 19*3 from the North for "merit" before giving elds which the North is still the beneficiaries. Then catchment. This is so unfair to the likes of uniben which I know of and ui also. 1 Like |

SESARS:They will admit those 10 people from Oyo state. But it is rare! Why? Because, we have Northerners that schooled in the South and are very sound like their counterparts in the South. Most of these Northerners will apply to Universities in the North e.g. ABU. They will dominate and be among Top scorers for MERIT. They are still recognised as ELDs and catchment, So they have 100% chance. This is what I call UNDUE ADVANTAGE. When you see the admission List with almost all names being Northerners, you think they are Tribalistic. They are not; SOUND NORTHERNERS from South TOOK THE ADVANTAGE. I had a northern friend that we all schooled here in Lagos. He applied for Medicine at UNILAG. He wasn't serious with his studies. Anytime I asked him, he would say "I'm from the North remember?" At last, he got that Medicine with 50 average. While some southerners with 70+ missed out. This is the UNDUE ADVANTAGE of the North. Where their state of origin covers them. 2ndly, Most Southerners prefer Schooling in the South. The best universities are in the South. So we will have less percentage going to the North. Now, we have some SOUTHERNERS that grew up in the NORTH and Schooled there. They are not Academically Sound like their brothers in the South. when they Apply to any Northern University, The University still see them as EDUCATIONALLY ADVANTAGED thereby giving them only MERIT SLOT. Which they Mostly Miss. Then lose the admission and start shouting TRIBALISM!! This is the DISADVANTAGE to ANY SOUTHERNER in the North. If they apply to any Southern University, that is even the Worst! So they are always in a Dilemma. What we should fight for is for FG to ban STATE OF ORIGIN and Introduce STATE OF RESIDENCE. So that any Northerner that Schooled in the south, will be treated equal like a southerner and any southerner that schooled in the North should be treated equal like a Northerner. In that way everyone is happy. Northern Universities are only using the loophole in that federal character Nonsense. They are not Tribalistic especially First List. It is strictly Monitored. ©️2021. 3 Likes |

I think I have trashed the topic well. If you think under wise, it's not a problem. When you have access to invaluable information, then you will know Nigeria still has small integrity. But Let me say this here so we don't misunderstand me; I used a department with carrying capacity of 100 to demonstrate. But in real life, if a department has 100 capacity, the university may divide the admission into; 1. 100%:Merit/catchment/ELDs. It means After first batch, no more admission into that department. only on paper. 2. 50%: Merit/Primary/First batch(while keeping to the rule of Merit/ELDs/catchment area). 50%: Other Batches/Lists(connections,runs,money begging, discretion) 3. 80%, 20% 4. 45% 55% 5. 40% 60% Infact any formula any university decide to use. JAMB MUST be aware( to check if the Merit/ELDs/Catchment area formula is used in relation to the remaining space for the department). No matter the formula a university adopts, they can't go Less than 40% for Merit/first batch/First list. If a University fails to keep to their Formula for Admissions for that Year or Exceed Carrying capacity, Students' admissions will be revoked or the List will be sent back to the University and they will be fined! Thank you. ©️2021. 1 Like |

samuelpeters:Guy I saw last year that is,2019/2020 Unilag Medicine admission list. I saw less than 15 non south westerners in their admission list for over 150 students admitted. Is it that the only space for merit is just 15? while catchment was over 130? |
Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by ejehijustice(m): 3:42pm On Jan 16, 2021 |
samuelpeters:Boss I understand your point it is very explanatory. Nevertheless, I reside in Zaria and I am privy to ABU's mode of admission. ABU's merit list is not the top scorers irrespective big state but respective of state. They admit for medicine I think the highest 2 per state as her merit list. If a person scores 320 from Oyo state as long as he is not the highest 2 from his state he has missed out of the merit list admission, while a person from Jigawa will be admitted ahead of him on merit list even if his score is 250 as long as he is among the highest 2 from his state. In ABU it is said that the competition is between you and people from your state and not really the whole aspirant. The ABU merit list pattern is flawed and it seems most northern universities follow suit. Your explanation is how it ought to be but it seems as though it is only southern universities that adhere small to this thing. 5 Likes |
Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by samuelpeters(m): 4:12pm On Jan 16, 2021 |
Zeeknow3245:Oh , I get now. SWesterners dominated the Pure Merit (Top scorers) and Catchment area. North/SE/SS are not part of UNILAG catchment and only the North and some states in south shared the little ELDs. Here is it; 45% Merit=68 names, 35% Catchment=53 names, Leaving ELDs to manage 29 names from other region. But we do have high score frequency where applicants may have the same score something like 80,80,80,80,80,80,79,79,79,79.8,79.8,79.8,79.8,79.8. e.t.c. you will continue to select as long as their scores are in the same range. Which may now give less space to accommodate others. We always see this in competitive courses like Medicine. Where 30 applicants have the same score. You Must accept them and before you know it, you have only 5 slots left for ELDs. Another trick is this; Some Southerners do change their state of origin to core North. Since what most universities look at for is your state of origin not your name. So they admit these Southerners from Merit/Catchment/ELDs with high scores. While leaving the main ELDs with low scores stranded. I have seen an admission List that contained 100% names from the region. It was later found that most of them changed their state of origin to Northern core state. Someone from Oyo will change it to Yobe, while someone from Enugu will change it to Zamfara. Just to get UNILAG admission or UNN admission and latter do an Affidavit to correct the problem. It will not invalid your admission or certificate. ©️2021. 1 Like |

ejehijustice:If that is the case it is 100% flawed and JAMB ought to reject it. Except they use their Northern superiority to enforce it. Southerners need to agitate for scrapping of state of origin/federal character and introduce state of residence. It's really Killing the South and favouring the North from Admission to work place. ©️2021. |

samuelpeters:Can you explain why one miss Thomas was denied admission with 290 aggregate while abu's cut off was reportedly 250? And for your information this directive from jamb as can be seen in the picture below was due to public outcry. Baba no go de defend the scam that goes on in this country. Just pray whatever modalities these institutions use favour you.

Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by samuelpeters(m): 4:37pm On Jan 16, 2021 |
SESARS:Go and read that story well. She said someone advised her to change her course to Anatomy which she did. So JAMB didn't consider her for Medicine rather Anatomy. After much enquiry, She wasn't even the first 2 top scorers from her state. Which was what ABU used as a criteria. But she would had had the admission if she hadn't changed her course to Anatomy. After everything all said and done, ABU was right! JAMB only asked ABU to consider her for Medicine since the case had raised a lot of dust. NB:ABU was right after all. Let's be guided. I'm not saying the system is 100% clean but give them some credit especially First batch. ©️2021 |

samuelpeters:If the above is true then it was her fault. But that merit of top 3 is a scheme to favour their peeps simple. It's either there's merit or nothing. |
Re: The medical students and aspirants thread by samuelpeters(m): 4:53pm On Jan 16, 2021 |
SESARS:Yeah. That top 3 should come in after pure Merit has been selected. Well na them know their arrangements with JAMB. you know how Nigeria is; Where Government official will be strict to southerners while giving Northerners soft landing. If na southern Universities now, them go rain brim stones on them. ©️2021. |

SESARS:Miss Thomas's aggregate score was 288 not 290. She had 302 in jamb and 274 in her post utme as compared to two other aspirants (from the same state- Niger state) who had 295 and 292 aggregate respectively. The first guy (I know this one personally) scored 288 in jamb and 302 in post utme. The other lady 275 in jamb and 309 in her post utme. Do the maths. Thomas had a greater chance with her Jamb score, but something happened, her post utme couldn't meet up. 2 Likes |

Zeeknow3245:She is a Nigerlite from Gbaiko Minna, Niger State (she is Gbagyi by tribe). I know this because we are from the same state. The other guy, Mujahid is also from Minna, and the other lady is from Bida Niger State The problem with you guys is that you don't confirm informations before posting and advertising your ignorance. I am not mocking her neither am justifying what Abu did, but if you've not listened to the both sides, don't judge based on one persons outcry. 3 years ago or so, a guy applied ABU Zaria with a jamb score of 320 and post utme of 258...from Edo state, he was offered physiology because someone scored higher (in aggregate) from the same state. I don't even have time to argue with you. I wish Goodness well, and I'm happy for her wherever she is 2 Likes |

Many of you are wasting your time and life running after medicine. There's more to life than medicine. Are you really called to be one? Are you really passionate? Or u just want the prestige or glamour that comes with being called a Dr. Better get real and find something doing |

How is it wasting one's life? people study course they don't like and can't use in the real world, what would you call that? Finally, don't you think you're wasting your life and time worrying about other people's decision? ..... Take your own advice, "get real and find something doing" 20 Likes 4 Shares |

Donpre:I just didn't know how to reply him until you came along. Bless you bro, bless you. Passion exists in everything once a person starts doing/enjoying it. No matter what he/she studies. There can be passion in Soil science or flowertology. Or medicine or law. You don't need passion to study anything really, you only need to settle down and jack. With determination and dedication you can study whatever you like, passion is only but secondary. 8 Likes |
