These people have clearly run out of ideas of all things to build and invest in , it is prison all over the country, they can as well build and design cemeteries in all APC States, Tufiakwa !!!!!!, brain dead government. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

No matter what the government does, Nairalanders will always have rubbish to say. There are a lot of delinquents in the street who should rot in prison for the rest of their natural lives. If not that our police are idiots, I would suggest a system of private for-profit prisons. The government should realize revenue from cheap labour otherwise spent on carrying out evil deeds. 8 Likes 1 Share |

kettykin: If they show you a picture of an overcrowded Nigerian prison, you would shout and criticise the govt. The government builds more prisons to lessen the burden on the current ones, you shout and criticise the government. Many of you on this forum are mentally sick in the head. 17 Likes 3 Shares |

Rossintii: you clearly missed it , if the economy was well run and the citizenry were clearly engaged in economic activities then there would be less need for investing in prisons, the government can as well build more cemeteries in APC states to create room for the more death sentences 2 Likes 3 Shares |

I dont mind them building new prisons but lets not ignore the fact 70% of the inmates in prison are awaiting trial not convicts. The government should opt to release them on bail, give them time served or give fines when possible. If they carried out their jobs efficiency the issue wouldn't exist to begin with. The government is doing a little bit to reduce the prison population. Only inmates that are 60 years old and above, those suffering from ill-health that are likely to terminate in death, convicts serving three years and above and have less than six months to serve, inmates with mental health issues, and inmates with options of fines not exceeding N50,000 and have no pending case are eligible for the pardon. 2 Likes 1 Share

The perception of prison is for punishment & usually associated with criminality. This leaves a stigma on persons who have been to prison no matter the circumstances that is why govt changed the name to correctional centre in order to give the detainees sense of rehabilitation. Most Prison services in Nigeria were built about 50-100yrs back with extremely poor facilities & the detainees are subjected to various inhumane treatment, living in environment not worthy for human space. There has been call from NGOs in & outside the country to rehabilitate Nigerian prisons especially with US and UK wanting to repatriate Nigerian prisoners serving their jail terms in their countries but under the condition that our prisons have to be rehabilitated to meet world standard, in Britain alone there are more than 25k Nigerians serving their prisons terms. Some of the challenges they pointed out include poor feeding of inmates, lack of adequate medical care for inmates due to lack of requisite facilities and lack of recreational and vocational training for inmates. The result is that many inmates of Nigerian prisons come out worse than when they went in. This is the main reason Nigeria is building modern correctional centres across the nation but unfortunately some people are developing the habit of criticising everything this govt is doing not because it's bad but because of their personal political frustration. Good things have to be appreciated while bad deserve criticism. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Most of us are prisoners. Jailed by the society While we focus on external freedom like geographic freedom, financial freedom, and political freedom we neglect a fundamental freedin- mental freedom. …. Mental freedom is freedom from society conditioning, society expectation and need for approval. It is the detachment of oneself from society labels. It is the recognition that one is not ones gender. One is not ones tribe. One are not ones religion .These are roles assigned to us while we are young. They were neccesary at that time when we lacked the ability to think. Now we have a choice to examine them and not carry them through adulthood. Mental freedom begins by excersicing control over ones emotion. Ones emotion does not dictate what one does. Frequent outburst over little triggers signals one who is a slave to his anger. Theft and corrupt practices are signs of a slave to emotion of desire and greed. Whatever controls your emotion controls you. Men who are unable to cry in public for fear of being labelled a weakling are in gender bondage. He cages those tears, act tough ,engage in drinking and smoking and other maladaptive act to suppress those emotion. A free person would choose to let the tears flow. Women who abandon their career to cater for kids out of duty as a woman and not out of love and personal choice is a slave to traditional gender roles. https://tobechispeaks./2020/10/10/world-mental-health-day-are-we-mentally-free/ |

They should decongest the existing prisons by reducing the number of awaiting-trial inmates through a more effective judicial system, otherwise they will keep building more prisons 1 Like |

Rossintii:You are sick too if you still have faith in the corrupt governments. When the contract is finally awarded, I hope you can help them defend the costs too. Poor judicial system is why the prisons are a hell on Earth. If they don't start their reforms from there, they can build extra two million prisons, nothing will change. |

ChoCho54: ''Poor judicial system'' is in the eye of the beholder. Most Americans also complain about their ''poor judicial system'', which incarcerates people for the most innocuous offences including possession of a little bit of cannabis, leading to high rates of imprisonment. There is also racial imbalance whereby a black person is 3 or 4 times more likely to be imprisoned than a white person for the same offence etc etc. So you can moan and groan all you like. Nowhere has a ''perfect judicial system''. 2 Likes |

Rossikk: Your point has been well made, but let's be honest...Nigeria still has issues with far too many suspects in jail awaiting trial., and the government needs to do things like training more judges, in addition to building more jails. 1 Like |
Re: FG To Build Six New Prisons Across The Country (see Locations) by Nobody: 6:28am On Jan 18, 2021 |
ChoCho54: Well, they should reform the system...we have too many people awaiting trial for example, and we need more funding for fthings like better forensics, etc... But let's give the government some credit for this, at least. Our prisions are filled to capacity, and over stretched. We need more new ones. And to be frank, you don't have evidence that they are cheating on the contract. Yes, I know, contracts in Nigeria are havens for corruption and all, but evidence is still important to substantiate any allegation. 2 Likes |

meobizy: Thank you. What you observe reveals Nigeria has a lot of worthless citizen. A very dangerous situation for any Country. Nigeria needs to seriously improve her crime detection system and toughen her penal system to include stiffer sentencing and increased incarceration rate. Nigerians are now brazenly committing more crime like rape and cyber crime. Any honest Nigerian will tell you cyber crime (yahoo yahoo) is now a culture and way of life for virtually most Nigerian youths. Only those who live outside Nigeria or saboteurs and worthless government critics within Nigeria will pretend not to know that severity of increasing crime in Nigeria which will engulf us all if Government does not act with a multi-pronged approach of which building more prisons, and sending more offenders to jail, must be one. Locking up offenders should not be the only approach to reducing crime in Nigeria but it must be one of them and we should have adaquate facility to lock up those who are a danger to others. Many Nigerians should not be walking the streets and they would not be in most well-run nations. |
