If our justice system works, this man ought to cash out from a law suit. But alas, it's just a Twitter story, so no need to get worked up.

The boss overreacted. Illiteracy is a word used to describe an uneducated person, and not an insulting word. How else should he have explained to her that his mum isn't fluent with English language?

I'm not surprised though cos that's how it is with female bosses, they're always so paranoid.

He would have say
Her mum understood Yoruba more than English

The boss read the staff very well. He must be a disrespectful type. He could have used euphemism intead of downright synedoche. She doesn't speak English, please communicate with her in Yoruba language.

Useless boss, I thought should chide the young man for labelling his mum illiterate in the first place and then move on.

Psoul:

You are right dear. How will the guy feel if he hears another person calling her mum an illiterate?
He is a PR personnel. He is supposed to know how to use words very well even in a situation that looks so bad.
A PR person is not supposed to use harsh words.
If that guy can use that crude word on her own mom, imagine how he will describe his clients.

My very point exactly!

You just put it succinctly.

I share your thoughts. Truly the boss over reacted but PR company deals with use of words. The boss expected some level of maturity when choosing words which the guy lack.

Thank you.

A lot folks don't know that PR= some level of diplomacy.

One little Freudian slip and that is it.

Not 'an illiterate', just illiterate please. My mum is illiterate, meaning she cannot read and write, in the English language I suppose.

You are towing the line the capitalist has set. What is wrong with him talking about his mum being an illiterate?

Let us judge the boss and the man?
The man made a statement which didn’t look too mature,
The boss overreacted and sacked him because of this statement.
Removing all other abnormalities,
Who behaved less civil?

A honest question

Why would the boss wants to speak with the worker's mother?

As the boss now sack the guy, how will the guy get money to "polish" the mother?

Werey boss.

And so? Just because you are the employer I am barred from everyday English? “illiterate” is not an abusive or a segregating word. Nor was it termed insulting in any dictionary. To make matter worse he used it to express his mom and not anyone else.

Please be pragmatic for once!!!
This is abuse of power and employer called the shot because he is obviously the employer and more powerful. Basis for the sack lacks foundation yet people like you still find reasons to support this mess! **spits**

I don't know if a lot of folks here are aware of this but there are a lot of people out there who find that very word 'illiterate' demeaning and insulting to say the least.

As a matter of fact, there are a number of 'harmless' words that we use on a day to day basis that are frowned upon in certain quarters.

Put in his shoes, I wouldn't have referred to my mom as an 'illiterate'. That doesn't really sound right in my opinion.

In this case, the man could have gone about it in another way by simply saying something like: 'Sir, you see, my mother does not speak in English. She is more fluent in her native language(you mention the language)...'

In such a scenario, your boss would get the point and then know exactly what to do. Sometimes, shortcuts kill when interacting with others and you must learn the art of Circumlocution/ paraphrasis

Some words look rather harmless on the surface but they sure can get us into some sort of **** when used carelessly or in the wrong occasion.

The fellow in that twitter 'story' found himself in such a moment.

Now, the boss, I agree went overboard. What happened to a little reprimand?

Oh, and what's more? It's a PR firm. sad

Just my little opinion.

So now that she has fired him, how does he take care of his mum?
Re: Man Loses Job After Telling Boss Over Phone His Mum Is An Illiterate by chinose(m): 4:44pm On Jan 26, 2021

If d boss really cared about d image of d guys mum, he/she should have cared about d old womans welfare. So now that d boss has sacked d guy, how's he gonna support his mum? Where's d intelligence in that?
Re: Man Loses Job After Telling Boss Over Phone His Mum Is An Illiterate by angelfallz(m): 4:46pm On Jan 26, 2021
It's easy in hindsight to say you would have reacted differently, because you've had enough time to think. Put yourself in his shoes, your boss suddenly asks to greet your mum and you know your mum doesn't understand English. He chose his words wrongly, but I don't blame him.
And no, illiterate is not an insult. Those who see it as an insult are those who use it to try to insult people. It's the same way some people try to insult an Hausa man by calling him aboki.
