Obj changed his service chiefs every 2 years, he appointed both northerners and southerners as COAS, though he never appointed any Muslim to the position.
Yaradua had only 2 COAS, all northerners, one Christian, the other one Muslim.
GEJ made his appointment of COAS from his constituency, south east and south south, all Christians.
Buhari also picked his COAS from his constituency, north west and north east, all Muslims

Except OBJ they picked from their area but the key is the result they command. Why keep underperforming hands just to do what other did?

Salihu was the guy who tried repositioning the army for the first time post war. He once described the Nigerian army during his valedictory session as "an army of anything goes".. Telling, with the benefit of hindsight...

a very big lie, Abacha's government was economically better than all the governments in Nigeria since 1999, he was a thief yes but looting was restricted to only a few of his clicks, unlike what we have today, he was a tyrant yes, but he only terrorised politician and big men who stepped on his toes, he had no business with the masses, lastly it was a heavily militarized government which had soldiers everywhere doing the work of police too, but economically Nigeria was better...

I believe if most of them have been competent, their state of origin would have been a non-issue. Nigerians were least bothered about where the late Prof. Dora Akunyili was from when she was in charge of NAFDAC.
