AVM Amao was the Chairman of the Nigerian Air Force 53rd Anniversary Celebration Committee in 2017.

He was formerly the Deputy Theatre Commander OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE and later redeployed as the Director of Policy at HQ NAF.

He was in January 2020 appointed as the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP).

Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao was born on 14 Sep 65 at Enugu. He hails from Oshogbo LGA of Osun State. He attended the following academic schools: Nuhu Bamali Pry School Kaduna from 1971 - 77, Command Secondary School Kakuri Kaduna from 1977 – 82, Federal College of Freshwater and Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) New Bussa from 1994 – 96, University of Madras India from 2002 – 2003, Kaduna Polytechnic from 2005 – 2006 and National Defence University China from 2012 – 2013.

He enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force on 19 Jan 1984 as a member of 35 NDA Regular Course and was commissioned as Pilot Officer on 20 Dec 86. He started his Primary Flying Training at 301 Flying Training School (FTS) Kaduna from 1987 – 1989, did the Basic Flying Training at 303 FTS Kano from 1990 – 92 and Tactical Fighter Training at 99 Air Combat Training Group (99 ACTG) Kainji from 1993 – 99. Thereafter, went for Instructor Pilot Course at 301 FTS Kaduna from 2004 – 2005.

He is a fighter pilot and has participated in various operations such as: Draw Down of AFISMA operation in Mali from Aug 2013 – Jan 14, operation ZAMAN LAFIYA from 20 Feb – 19 Jul 15 and operation LAFIYA DOLE (North East operations) from 19 Jul 15 – 16 Feb 16. His decorations include: Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), General Service Medal (GSM), River Benue Star (RBS), Passed Staff College (psc) and Fellow National Defence University (FNDU) China.

The senior officer has attended several military courses which include: Junior Division Course at Armed Forces Command Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji from Jun – Dec 1986, Senior Division Course at Defence Services Staff College India from 2002 – 2003, Defence Course at National Defence University China from 2012 – 2013, Aircraft Accident Investigation in Civil Airline at NCAT Zaria and Aircraft Accident Investigation Course at Karachi, Pakistan.

He has the following academic qualification: MSc in Defence and Strategic Studies from University of Madras, India, Master of Military Science and Strategy (MMSc) and Advance Diploma in Defence and Strategy Studies from NDU China, Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Diplomacy from Kaduna Polytechnic, National Diploma in Freshwater and Fisheries Technology from FCFFT New Bussa and Nigerian Defence Academy Certificate of Education.

- He was the GOC 7 division, he needed to show leadership, he did not. That video was demoralizing, he was taking troops in battle, nobody needs a simp in a life and death situation.

- He recorded and distributed a video in an unsafe, very unprofessional manner.

- The video showed operational areas

- The video, a classified material leaked to the general public.

- It was PR coup for Boko-Haram, ISWAP and the rest of the terrorist bandwagon.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Nigerien Air Force, Colonel Amirou Abdoulkader, has assured the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) of his commitment towards strengthening the strategic relationship with the NAF in fight against insurgency and other criminal activities affecting Nigeria and the Republic of Niger whilst also taking advantage of the opportunities available in the NAF to enhance professionalism and build needed capacity for the effective and efficient employment of Air Power in his Service. The Nigerien CAS disclosed this today, 26 January 2021, when he led a delegation on an official visit to the outgoing NAF CAS, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at Headquarters NAF, Abuja. While in Nigeria, the Nigerien CAS also served as the Guest of Honour as the NAF winged 7 additional NAF pilots; 6 of whom recently completed their Basic and Intermediate Fixed Wing Training at 403 Flying Training School, Kano while the seventh completed his training with the Indian Air Force.

In his remarks during the visit, Colonel Amirou Abdoulkader, restated the commitment of the Niger Republic to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the two air forces, which so far has yielded several mutually beneficial military collaborations. He noted that Nigeria and Niger are neighboring countries that share a common border of about 1,500km and have always maintained exemplary and fraternal relations covering social, cultural economic, and security interests amongst others. He noted that the context of the security challenges being faced by both countries necessitates greater synergy in relations on all levels. The Nigerien CAS disclosed that the mandate of the visit was to ensure the protection of the respective countries from all kinds of threats, both external and internal. He added that the nature of conflicts and the persistence of groups associated with unhealthy activities require the 2 countries to find lasting solutions and continuously adapt to current and future threats. According to him, “we must continue to strengthen our human material and operational capacities in order to be in line with current and future threats, it is in this context we visited the NAF which represents a model in the sub-region and could assist us to ensure growth and consolidation of our achievements.”

The Nigerien CAS also commended Air Marshal Abubakar for his visionary, focused and upright leadership while lauding NAF’s pivotal role in Counter Insurgency (COIN) Operations in Nigeria. He thanked the NAF CAS for the collaboration with Diffa Air Base 501 (BA501). He further urged the BA501 and the ATF to sustain the momentum. He prayed that the visit would mark a significant turning point in collaboration between the countries’ armed forces.

While welcoming the Nigerien CAS, Air Marshal Abubakar remarked that Twenty First Century security challenges require strong collaboration and strategic partnerships to successfully overcome them. He noted that this was the kind of partnership the NAF had enjoyed with its Nigérien counterpart over the years. He said the visit of the Nigérien Air Force CAS to HQ NAF was yet another strong demonstration of the Niger Republic's commitment to strengthening the partnership between both countries. He noted in particular that the story of the successes recorded in the COIN Operations in the Northeast of Nigeria would not be complete without mentioning how the partnership between the 2 air forces has contributed significantly to the gains made in the Northeast and other theatres of conflict.

Speaking on the winging of new pilots, the CAS highlighted that several NAF personnel had been trained in various specialties, with many others currently undergoing training both within and outside the country. He also noted that, from July 2015 to date, the NAF has winged 124 pilots comprising 76 pilots who completed their training in foreign institutions and 48 who had trained in local institutions. He further disclosed that with today’s winging of 7 pilots, the total number of pilots trained by the current Nigerian Air Force administration is now 131, which constitutes 49.6 per cent of the total strength of NAF active pilots. The CAS added that the 7 pilots who completed basic fighter pilot training are a testament of NAF’s deliberate efforts at training fighter pilots to man the fighter platforms in its inventory as well as those expected to be received in the nearest future, consequently, placing the NAF at a dominant position to deliver on its constitutional role, especially at this time when the nation is facing numerous security challenges.

Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar further disclosed that, at present, the NAF has a total of 193 officers and airmen/airwomen undergoing training abroad cutting across several specialties and trades. “Out of this number”, the CAS said, “2 pilots are currently undergoing Undergraduate Pilot Training with the United States Air Force, while 4 student pilots are in the Czech Republic undergoing Basic Fighter Training on the L-39 aircraft. In the same vein, 4 pilots are undergoing helicopter training at the United States Army Aviation, while another 4 have been processed to join up in the coming days”. He noted, furthermore, that 9 pilots were in the United Kingdom undergoing Basic Helicopter Pilot Training. The CAS also highlighted that another 9 personnel were in South Africa undergoing Basic Fixed Wing Pilot Training. According to him, “it is pertinent to highlight that notwithstanding these achievements, the NAF cannot afford to rest on its oars at training her personnel for combat readiness in the face of current security challenges”. Air Marshal Abubakar reminded the young pilots that the feat they had achieved came with responsibility and as such, much would be expected of them. He further thanked the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his consistent commitment to the development of the Armed Forces, particularly the NAF.

In his welcome address the Chief of Policy and Plans (COPP), Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Idris, noted that both countries were currently confronted with common security challenges along a shared border. According to him. "In response to these threats, the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) was established and our nations collectively play a major role in troops and equipment contribution to the Force. Your visit is therefore timely as it will give both air forces the opportunity to critically deliberate on the security challenges confronting our nations with a view to finding lasting solutions. The Nigerian Air Force is open to partnerships and collaborations that would effectively address these security challenges.” He further encouraged the visiting CAS to explore all opportunities considered mutually beneficial to both air forces and nations.

While receiving the Nigerien CAS in his office, the Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS) General Abayomi Olonisakin, stated that the visit would reinforce and further consolidate on the existing cooperation between the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and Nigerien Armed Forces. The CDS noted that the visit would open up more areas of cooperation especially, training between the NAF and Nigerien Air Force. General Olonisakin further stated that the AFN and MNJTF have been working together to ensure that peace is restored in the Lake Chard Basin area.

The role the CDS plays depends on the CDS himself and the president. If the CDS isn't charismatic and the president doesn't acknowledge him, he will be ceremonial. But as the CDS is a senior officer to the COAS, he should be able to command the COAS.

No fewer than 20 members of courses 34 and 35 may proceed on retirement as the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday removed service chiefs and appointed a new set of officers to replace them.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement titled, ‘President Buhari appoints new service chiefs,’ named officers who would head the nation’s armed forces.

According to him, they include Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General I. Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao.

Shortly after the appointment of the service chiefs, sources in the Nigerian Army told The PUNCH that the appointment of the new service chiefs might force no fewer than 20 generals in regiment courses 34 and 35 to retire. While Attahiru is a member of Course 35, Irabor is a member of Course 34.

Earlier in his statement, the Presidential spokesman, Adesina, stated, “President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the immediate resignation of the service chiefs, and their retirement from service.

“Those involved are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

“President Buhari thanks the outgoing Service Chiefs for what he calls their ‘overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,’ wishing them well in their future endeavours.

“The new service chiefs are: Major-General Lucky Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

“The President congratulates the new Service Chiefs, and urges them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.”

The PUNCH gathered that chief among those expected to retire is Lt. Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, the Chief of Training and Operations, Army headquarters.

He was promoted in 2019 to the same rank as Buratai by the President.

The PUNCH gathered that although many of the senior officers might retire, the service years of some of them might be extended by the new chief of army staff who would need their experience in the ongoing counterinsurgency campaign in the North-East.

It was also learnt that some of them might be posted to the defence headquarters, where they would not be reporting to the chief of army staff.

A retired general said, “We have the dearth of officers with experience in Liberia and Sierra Leone wars because it takes gut to fight these boys (insurgents). They use the same tactics we fought against in Sierra Leone and Liberia. It is not automatic that members of Course 34 and 35 would retire.

“Course 33 has gone, we have 34 and 35. Irabor is Course 34. Attahiru is course 35. About 20 generals in course 34 and 35 may go, but the COAS may retain some of them. He would use his discretion. He would want his course mates to be around him. Some may be posted to the defence headquarters.”

A retired officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recalled that there was a frosty relationship between Buratai and Attahiru.

Buratai had in 2017 removed Attahiru as Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole following a spate of attacks by the insurgents, including the killing of at least 50 people in a mosque.

Buratai also gave him a deadline to deliver Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau dead or alive within 40 days.

Attahiru had taken over the command in May 2017, from Irabor who is now the CDS, but suicide bombings and attacks on military formations increased drastically under him.

In June, barely a month after he took over, Boko Haram insurgents attacked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

A month after, a group of geologists and technologists from the University of Maiduguri were ambushed by Boko Haram insurgents at Magumeri area of Borno state. About 12 soldiers who escorted the academics were reportedly killed.

Some staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on the team were also killed in the brutal ambush.

Boko Haram, using four female suicide bombers, also attacked Muna Gari, a suburb of Maiduguri, killing about 14 persons.

Attahiru was subsequently removed and posted out of the combat zone.

In his valedictory speech at the operation, Attahiru had described his posting as routine.

He stated that his team killed five Boko Haram commanders and neutralised 70 terrorists while he was at the helm.

Attahiru had said, “Suffice to note that during the operations, 5 high profile BHT commanders and many foot soldiers were killed, while many other members of the group surrendered owing to the effectiveness of the operations,” Attahiru said in December 2017.

“None kinetic operations were also conducted through coordinated media and information operations that led to the surrender of 72 BHT, who were immediately inducted into Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.

“Furthermore, operational support was also provided to troops of Multinational Joint Task Force during Operation RAWAN KADA in June 2017, which led to the killing of over 70 BHT and the capture of assorted automatic weapons.”

Following the increasing attacks by Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East and banditry in the North-West as well as activities of killer herdsmen in other parts of the country, the National Assembly, the northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum; its counterpart in the South-West and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, called for the removal of the service chiefs, who were appointed in 2015.

But the Presidency has repeatedly dismissed such calls, saying it was the President’s prerogative to appoint and remove heads of the country’s armed forces.

Reacting to the removal of the service chiefs and appointment of new ones, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Niger State Mr Jonathan Vatsa, in an interview with The PUNCH, said the President’s action came late as the military had been bastardised already.

On his part, Kaduna State Christian Association of Nigeria Chairman and Vice Chairman (19 Northern States and Abuja), John Hayab, said the removal of the service chiefs was long overdue.

He stated, “Nigerians have received these changes as something long overdue that is why we will not celebrate much but pray more for them to make a difference.”

The National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, told The PUNCH that the changes were belated. He also wondered why an officer from the South-East was not appointed.

He said, “We are not excited about the belated action of Mr. President. So much has been done to damage the security architecture under nepotism.

“We can only be impressed with the new team when we no longer hear that soldiers are accompanying herders to beat people like it happened in Ogun days back.

“We will want to see inclusive security arrangement to be convinced that normalcy is about to return. We also will like to know why no person was found worthy from the South-East in the new team.”

Hit the ground running, senators tell service chiefs

Also, some Senators asked the newly appointed service chiefs to hit the ground running by tackling the worsening insecurity across the country.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) said, “The appointment of new service chiefs is better late than never. We have been calling for this for a long time now.

“Let us hope that this team would stem the tide of insecurity”.

On his part, Opeyemi Bamidele said, “This is just one out of a number of steps needed to be taken, to tackle insecurity which is making life difficult for Nigerians.

“We should work on the morale of the serving military officers so that they can pursue the war against banditry and insurgency very well”

Military has blocked off vehicular movements in my area. Most towns in Borno central and South are now Islands for 3 days now

But, I've read about senior officers been forced to retire. Example was during Minimah time as the COAS. I read that, officers that are Buratai senior will all be force to retire. Just to make way for Buratai.

After Ihejirika time too, I read that officers will be force to retire so that Minimah will become the COAS.

For example now, If an officer from course 33 will become the COAS, officers from course 34,35 and 36 will all be ask to go... Even though nah only members of course 36 support retire that year.

Nigerian Troops Invade Four Boko Haram Strongholds in Sambisa Forest

The Nigerian troops with the support of the Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF) have invaded four Boko Haram strongholds in North-East.

The accomplishment was revealed few hours after the announcement of new military service chiefs.

The Operation led by Brig. Gen Waidi Shaibu, Brigade commander of 21 special armor brigade, stormed and killed several Boko Haram fighters in Maiyanki, Darulsallam, Bula kurege and Izza.

A top military source told PRNigeria that the camps served as training grounds for the militants fighters and stationed standby forces in preparation for ambush attacks on nearby troops positions.

The source said that a number of the terrorist unit commanders and high value fighters were eliminated, while many more were seriously injured in the ground and aerial strike Operation in the Insurgents’ enclaves.

Dozens of equipment have been captured from the terrorists while food stuffs, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) making materials and clothings were destroyed.

“We have cleared Maiyanki, Darulsallam, Bula kurege and have now taken over Izza, all former Bolo Haram strong points. Our troops have been repeatedly attacked in harbour areas, throughout the night, but all were repelled while inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

“The situation is tough but we are winning. Sadly, a soldier paid the supreme sacrifice and 3 were injured , we brought them out. Our resolve and commitment is unshaken,” he said.

I believe you wanted to say "if an officer from 33RC is to become COAS all 32RC will be asked to go."

Going back to the secondary school scenario, every set produce Headboy and other prefects. Although, Buratai was from 33RC while leo Irabo from 34RC and Ibrahim Atahiru is from 35RC. This simply means 34RC didn't produce COAS but produced CDS.

The simple truth is your juniors can't command you so you have to leave the force.

Even those in service know there seniors even if they happen to be on the same rank. That's why you see major-generals salute another major-general. A good example is the case of Irabor and Atahiru or Buratai and Adeosun who were both Lt. Generals.

They don't joke with seniority.
