we didn't plan for proper irrigation,we relied on manual watering with hose and it is still dry season by March,so we have our palm kernel mill installation and testing,so we can't water it adequately,it was abandoned for more pressing issues,if don't have plans for a proper irrigation pls forget it.
Oga Emeka. Pls Can i contact you on whatsapp

Thanks alot . Am thinking of doing sack cause the land i want to use is not that ok. Hope no problem with that
I would advise that you work manure into the soil at the spot you want to plant than using sack.
I am yet to see a commercial sack farmer

good morning boss.
I noticed that some of my tomato plants leaves are curling upward like in the pic.
what can be the cause
Oga mi, curling of leaves in tomato like every other plant can be chemically induced, biologically or simply response of your plant to your immediate environment. Although, your picture ain't too clear but what did you spray on it?

You also stated the variety planted is platinum right? (Resistant to TYLC virus)

Note: some tomato varieties are notorious for curling grin.
I once had all my tomato plants curling (variety withheld) out on one occasion. In some cases, there is nothing you can do to stop the curling so long it isn't disease caused.

yes boss.
thanks a lot.
I planted platinum and this is my first time trying it out.
I am still observing them tho.
I doubt it was chemically induced

So you mean i cant use sack. But i read on here that Oga emeka and some others used sack more than once. Cos the land has been used to do mould block

Very correct boss, i had experienced them too...naturally curly but they were looking very healthy. A clearer pic would have given d best diagnosis. I became skeptical too the moment he mentioned platinum that's why I asked if the leaves are infected in addition to the curling.

from my little experience about sack farming compared to the conventional way. I would advise you plant on bed, but if you have no other option than sack, try it out sir

Cucumber has dealt with me seriously and I'm considering looking at other crops like garden egg, tomato and pepper.

Besides the cucumber dying too early, several of the fruits keep getting some kind of disease that I'm yet to find someone with concrete information on the cause and remedy.

See attached pictures.

Most of these cucumbers will desintegrate the next day or in two days.

Has anyone had this same issue and found a solution to it?

cucumber during dry season isn't that easy, especially when the water level has gone low.
I experimented at the same time and same seed on two different plot of land, one is upland and the other is lowland during this dry season and the result was so clear.

Yes they are root bound and they were topped late. We were quite busy with other activities on the farm and the pepper initially appeared to be growing very slow as compared to seedlings from extracted seeds of some other type of pepper. Then the leaves formed a thick canopy that didn't allow me notice their growth very well because of how closely packed they were. By the time I realized what was going on they had picked up and outgrown the other nursery.

Good evening all.
Please if you have had an experience regarding this please help asap.

There is this land I got recently that is close to stream but I'm having serious headache with it regarding the type of soil.

I noticed the soil is a clay soil and that it holds on water.
My fear is on the soil drainage when the rain comes since I'm not in control of rain and I'm in the south that experiences heavy downpour yearly.

I have never grown vegetables on a soil like this.
I have always had loamy and sandy soils that drains well with raised bed and have not had issues.

What is your experience growing pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, etc on a clay soil.

Drought problems made me source for a land close to water but this clay is giving greater headache now.

Please help asap with your suggestions.

Thank you.

around my area farmers are growing cucumbers on rice fields now,but same cannot be when rain starts, are you even sure the area will not flood during heavy rain,if you must use the land do high ridges and study carefully the terrain for signs of previous floods, you can plant now but be ready to pack from July to September

The one in the attached picture was nandini I harvested in December, but my current batch of Saira is still having the same issue. However, another person who bought same Saira seeds from the same source doesn't have the issue.

Me I'm suspecting it may have something to do with soil or nutrient deficiency.

the problem with the cucumbers is CMV or cucumber mosiac virus,it looks like nandini and saira has poor resistance against that, the fruits will have water soaked spots and will spoil immediately after harvest the leafs will also have yellow chlorosis, the best treatment is to change variety

I think its from this batch of seeds they brought into the country because I've being planting this seed for over two years and i've not experience this until last year November till now....my 13plot cucumber farm plus newly installed drip tapes plus workers wages and after everything no result....

from the description you gave me, it's on the hilly side where flooding doesn't occur!
Naturally it's not always good for vegetables due to low aeration and high water holding capacity! Amendment can be done by deep and thorough tillage and application of HIGH quantities of organic matter, maybe in the form of manure.
Apply the manure at least 2-3 weeks before cultivation for better results.
And finally, be careful with your irrigation system as this soil has an extremely high water retention capacity...others who have farmed by the riverside can help contribute too

Any update on the price of cucumber
cucumber price depends on your location, size and variety,Uyo is #8k big green size,Calabar #7k, onitsha #5k,this is the period in the year with highest prices from February to middle march, that is when crops planted during Xmas and new year are been harvested, the farmers that are enjoying this high price are the die Harders that sacrificed a little bit of jolly to be in the bush and be Optimistic that tomorrow will bring a brighter day,Hope in the face of despair and disappointments
