Anyway, the minister addressed this issue in this interview last week. He talked about the cause of the problem and the solutions. Watch from the 10:47 minute mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vun8D4uIACI |

In as much as it is unsightly and blame the government officials who ought to have them cleared out when they started mushrooming, OP is such a narrow minded individual ! Does he have a database of the tribes of the traders there? 2 Likes |

Aconomist: This is a common problem in many developing countries. It is the reason that the Lagos State rail system is going to have many elevated lines and lines that run in the middle of expressways. The Federal Government is also aware of the problem, but Standard Gauge rail system has not been completed. As the minister said in the video below, the line is going to be fenced from Apapa to Iju to prevent encroachment. naptu2: Everybody on this thread knows that you are not interested in the solutions to the problem, but that this is just another silly example of the kind of bigotry that has become common on this site. You did not ask the people that are in the picture what their ethnicity is, but you needlessly included the word "Yoruba" in the title of the thread in order to ignite another silly ethnic warfare on this thread. Shame on you! You don't even know anything about the new rail line, that's why you wrote, "It's the new line. It's not Agege". Shame on you! As I said, this kind of encroachment is a problem accross Nigeria and in developing countries around the world. It is not limited to a place or ethnic group. joseph1832: There are 2 things that usually happen. In the case of Nigeria, the train driver usually slows down and blares his horn and the traders scramble off the track until the train has gone (this is why the Enugu State Government and traders were angry with the train driver at the Enugu incident. He didn't slow down, neither did he blare his horn). In the other examples that I gave above, the train usually passes at a specific time and so the traders begin moving their goods ahead of time. This is why Rotimi Amaechi said that the trains have a maximum speed of 70 kmph within the Lagos area (because they don't want to kill people). They only speed up after going past Iju. The Lagos State Government, the Railway Police and the NRC have often forced the traders off the rail line and confiscated their goods, but the traders usually gain the sympathy of the masses and they return to trade on the rail line as soon as the authorities have left. The Fashola Administration began destroying and burning their tables and kiosks in an effort to deter them, but they returned as soon as he left office. That administration planned to make its rail lines elevated (on bridges) as a means of avoiding the problem, but this makes the project more expensive. The Federal Government plans to fence off the rail lines, but I suspect that the traders will find a way around that. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Aconomist: This looks like Yaba bustop. The traders have always been there. Maybe fencing will partially solve the problem in terms of encroachment on the rail lines. Traders in the Yaba axis like other parts of Lagos are of mixed tribes. The "you wan buy dollars", "you wan sell gold" guys also hang around that area. 1 Like |
