Nigeria survey suggests 23% of Lagos residents had Covid last year.

Study suggests infection rates have been much higher across the country than previously thought

More than one in five people in the state of Lagos in Nigeria had Covid-19 antibodies at the end of October, according to a study that suggests infection rates were much higher across the country than previously thought.

Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Institute for Medical Research collected blood samples from more than 10,000 individuals living in a representative sample of households in four states in September and October.

According to findings released on Monday, the prevalence of antibodies was 23% in the states of Lagos – which is home to more than 16 million people – and Enugu, 19% in Nasarawa state, and 9% in Gombe state. Confirmed infections stood in the tens of thousands at the time.

The findings offer the first detailed look into infections in Africa’s most populous country, where a lack of testing supplies has hampered the ability of authorities to fully ascertain the spread of the virus. Such seroprevalence studies are seen as the only way of revealing the actual burden of Covid-19 in Africa.

New variants were emerging quickly in Nigeria, the NCDC said, and would continue to do so until transmission rates fell.

Up to now the country has recorded just 1,800 deaths from Covid, but the head of the NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said the study findings meant it was “even more important” that Nigeria secured vaccines. Nigeria, like other countries in Africa, has struggled to secure vaccine doses amid fierce global competition.

Nigerian health officials recently approved the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for use in the country and on Monday requested 10m vaccine doses from the African Union (AU) and the World Health Organization Covax programme – a platform working to secure vaccines for African countries. But authorities have not made clear when the vaccines will arrive.

Anyone noticed that during October when myriad of people gathered to protest, the chart reads a low percent?

Obviously, there was no social distancing.

Inasmuch as I know the virus is real, the Nigerian agency puts up any figure they like.

Take responsibility.

Sadly those people can still be infected with the South African variant against which the Oxford/Astrazenica vaccine of which we intend to get 10 million doses is barely effective. The vaccines can easily be updated and I think they really should do that right away.

Who did the study and how did he come up with this report with below 1.5 million test for over 12 months

Which lab was the new variant researched
If actually there's a new variant, will the about to be supplied Covid 19 vaccine treat the new variant

SCAMdemic figures.

I look forward to the day when these SCAM artists will finally tell people the truth that COVID-19 is just another name for Flu.

Since COVID19 came on board, Flu magically disappeared all over the world.

What does that tell you?

Okay.

With what population sample? Those vague figures?

The way they go about these figures are the reason most people in Nigeria don't believe in the pandemic and there by making those of us that know it exists endangered species.

Lol na market, ahịa ga na-ere.

Only God knows the number of millionaires that this Covid 19 has created directly, especially in our health ministries. A great opportunity that many grabbed with hydra hands and are ready to milk it to eternity.

Covid 19 is real, government scams with it is also more than real.

I suspected that too. The body gets to fight viruses like this on it's own. If your body isn't strong enough, the virus will take you down.

Then to the vaccine issue, it shows how vulnerable we are as a country. Yet we keep deceiving ourselves. Nigeria cannot hussle for vaccine without getting assistance from WHO and African Union. And we wonder why other countries look down on us.

The truth of the matter is that a beggar can never be rich until it changes its mindset and hussle like every other person. The first step towards developing this nation and standing as a force in the world is to reject every form of foreign aid and think of solutions from within.

The politicians don't care because they want to steal the aid. The donors know too that the money is being stolen, but they keep donating because it keeps the beggar at a lower level. That's including the idea that they can control the leaders of such beggar nations.

Despise the free lunch... that remains an important law of power.
